I have mentioned in the past that I believed Nutan to be the original tragedy queen, before Meena Kumari joined in playing such roles. But just now I have realised that the crown of the original tragedy queen should go to Nimmi who was playing such roles almost from the beginning of her career, which began prior to Nutan and Meena Kumari’s forays in to tragedy roles.
And what happens when a tragedy queen gets paited up with a comedy actor, like say Kishore Kumar ! The result has been good comic fun as far as Kishore Kumar-Nutan (viz “Dilli Ka Thug” ) and Kishore Kumar-Meena Kumari (“Memsaahib”)are concerned. In these movies Nutan and Meena Kumari play positive bubbly character.
In “Bhai Bhai” (1956), Kishore Kumar gets paired with Nimmi. What will happen. will happy go lucky nature prevail, or melancholy will have the upper hand. i have no idea since I have not watched this movie.
As far as this song from “Bhai Bhai” (1956) is concerned, Nimmi is singing a melancholic song where she pours her sorrow while alone, where she expresses the view that his beloved does not realise his value. Personally, I will fail to realise the value of such a lady forever in the weepy mode at the drop of a hat.
“Fortunately” for her, kishore Kumar is watching her singing and apparently realising the “errors” of his ways. Hopefully, he realised the “value” of Nimmi. 😀
I am surprised that this all time classic song was not yet discussed in this blog. But may be I should be so surprised. There are tens of thousands of great songs and covering them all will keep me busy for many many years to come.
This song is sung by Lata. Rajinder Krishan is the Lyricist and Madan Mohan is the music director. Lyrics of this song were provided by Prakashchandra.
In this blog, we celebrate landmarks when we reach 100 songs of an artist. but what about the situarion when we reach multiple hundreds of some artists. Often the milestone goes unnoticed.
Fortunatel;y, this time, this milestone has been in my notice and I will like it to bring to the notice of our readers. This song is the 200th song of Madan Mohan asa music director in this blog. This is no mean achievement in just over three years, seeing that we do not concentrate on just one artist. To put things into further perspective, Madan Mohan has composed just over 700 songs in his career as a Hindi movie music director. And more than one fourth of these songs, including some rare songs, is a feat that we can be proud of in this blog.
Another landmark that I missed yesterday is the fact that Sudhir completed his own century of articles as a guest poster. His contributions in adding a new dimension to this blog, not only as a guest poster, but also as a researcher and collector of old songs has been invaluable. And I hope his ongoing discussions of K L Saigal songs in this blog will help many more people to realise the value of K L Saigal as a collosus of Hindi movie music.

Atul ji,
Congratulations on new Landmarks.
I must thank you for giving us the treat of enjoying 200 ( i.e. TWO HUNDRED) songs of Madan Mohan–The Shaapit Gandharva,as he was called by one writer once.(It means a singing /music exponent of the Heavens who is under a curse).
You have given him the recognition which he richly deserved,not only by presenting his songs,but also expertly explaining the stregths of the songs too !
We look forward to similar milestones in future also.

Though I joined this blog quite late,I have not only enjoyed your articles since,but also currently going thru the earlier postings.

Atulji, anyone whether a Male or a Female who is not valued, not appreciated or valued will feel hurt angry and sorrowful. Besides the songs are contextual vis-à-vis the story line and the era (social-political-religious) when they were made. So such statements as above leave a bad taste in the mouth, especially when I expect a certain level of empathy, aesthetics and graciousness. Otherwise one would come across as any other person who is merely collecting details, hoarding songs and is out to make scores. I hope I am not offensive but making judgmental statements especially against women compels me to write this.

I would like to believe that I have a sense of humour. Raja in fact has coined a term “Atulism” for this kind of humour. I often love to make light hearted comments about movies, songs, actors etc in my discussion of the songs. They are needed to be taken as such and should not be misconstrued as anything serious. I love to make light hearted observations and those observations need to be treated as such.

Indeed, I have already pointed it out a few times that remarks like this are made in lighter vein and they should be taken as such. Most regulars on this blog realise when I am making a light hearted comment. As long as the regulars take those comments in the right spirit, that is all right. I thank you for your understanding. I think that I will need to put a permanent disclaimer in the about page to the effect that my comments in posts are often in the nature of light hearted banter and they are not to be taken seriously.
