Ham aur tum aur ye samaa

Posted on: August 8, 2011

Shammi Kapoor discovered his calling as the actor we all know and admire in 1957 with “Tumsa Nahin Dekha”. It was followed by “Dil Deke Dekho” (1959) and the phenomenon of Shammi Kapoor was well on its way.

Music of Shammi Kapoor movies have always been their strong suit and these two movies were no exception. Most people associate Shammi Kapoor movies with Shankar Jaikishan’s music but interestingly enough, Shankar Jaikishan had ye to make appear on the scene as far as Shammi Kapoor movies were concerned. The listing music of “Tumsa Nahin Dekha” (1957) was composed by O P Nayyar. As for the movie “Dil Deke Dekho” (1959), its music was composed by debutant music director Usha Khanna. And what a fine debut she made !

I have discussed as many as six songs from “Dil Deke Dekho” (1959) already but there are still songs from this movie that are not yet posted. Take this song for example. The realisation that this song was not yet discussed dawned upon me when nahm sent the lyrics of this song to me.

Here is this song from this movie. It is sung by Rafi and it is picturised on Shammi Kapoor and Asha Parekh. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. What asensuosly sung song it is !

The picturised version is only two paragraphs long and leaves the listener wanting for more. The link of the full audio of the song is also included.

Song-Ham aur tum aur ye samaa (Dil Deke Dekho) (1959) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Usha Khanna

Lyrics (Provided by nahm)

Ham aur tum aur ye samaa
kyaa nasha nasha sa hai
boliye na boliye
sab sunaa sunaa sa hai
ham aur tum aur ye samaa
kya nasha nasha sa hai

beqaraar se ho kyun
ham ko paas aane bhi do
gir pada jo haath se
wo roomaal uthhaane bhi do
bante kyun ho jaane bhi do
bante kyun ho jaane bhi do
ham aur tum aur ye samaa
kyaa nasha nasha sa hai
boliye na boliye
sab sunaa sunaa sa hai

aaj baat baat pe
aap kyun sambhalne lagey
thharthharaaye honthh kyun
ashq kyun machalne lage
lipte gesu khulne lage
lipte gesu khulne lage
ham aur tum aur ye samaa
kyaa nasha nasha sa hai
boliye na boliye
sab sunaa sunaa sa hai

Hey, one of my favourite Rafi-Shammi songs! I can listen to this any number of times without getting bored of it. Initially it may seem a bit slow but it grows on you. And it is this “slowness” that is actually its charm. Not to mention Rafi saab’s voice. It is absolutely amazing in this song. I love the way he says “kya nasha nasha sa hai” and “sab sunaa sunaa sa hai”. 🙂

Thanks for posting this, Atul.

This is such a wonderful song, easily one of the most romantic songs ever. Rafi’s voice is so silky, creating the magical mood for the song. Thanks for this, Atul!

Atul ji,
The video clip of the song is from ‘College Girl’ (1960) with the same first-line mukhda.

The correct video clip of the song with both the stanzas (albeit flipped, compared with audio clip):

You may have to make the necessary changes in the post.
