“Panghat” (1943) is a Prakash Pictures production. It was directed by K J Parmar and Mahesh Chandra. It had actors like Umakant, Ratnamala, Jeewan, Sushil Kumar, Raj Kumari, Shukul, Chiman Seth etc in it. There is not much information available on this movie on internet and much of the information (including what is available on imdb) is misleading and incorrect. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie.
I came across a lovely song from this movie. This song is sung by Raj Kumari and chorus. Interestingly enough, Rajkumari Shukla, popularly known as Rajkumari is credited in the star cast as an actor and so one would expect a song sung by her to be picturised on herself But this song is picturised not on her but on Ratnamala and other ladies. They are singing and dancing. I am not familar with the story of this movie, but I guess from the picturisation and the lyrics that the ladies are observing Teej, which is a festival in which married women play for the long lives of their husbands and the unmarried girls pray for good grooms for themselves. In this song, the girls are indeed wishing for a groom like Krishn, a mother in law like Jashumati, good household, good in laws, River Jamuna as the place to fetch water etc.
The song is written by Pt Indra Chandra and music is composed by S N Tripathi.
Incidentally, the festival of Teej was celebrated just yesterday and I read about it in today’s paper with photos of a few ladies singing and dancing, just like the ladies in this seven decades old video clip.

Atul ji,
I refer to your write up above for the song.
The Rajkumari who acted in this film was Rajkumari Shukla, who also was a singer. The usual Rajkumari who sang 6 songs in this film was the famous Playback singer, who stopped acting in the films around this time only to concentrate only on playback singing. The last film in which she acted was ‘Hunterwali ki Beti’-1943.
In fact there were 3 RAJKUMARIs in the Hindi film industry at the same time.
1.Rajkumari Banaraswali who became Rajkumari Dubey after marriage. This is the one who was most popular and regular Rajkumari.
2.Rajkumari Calcuttewali whose real name was Pullo Bai.She acted as Chandramukhi in the original Devdas. She limited herself to films made in Calcutta only.
3.Rajkumari Shukla who was an actress and singer too,but her name is always mentioned as Rajkumari Shukla-like e.g. In film Panghat, she too sang 1 song-Chachi ji mori, chuha kothe ke beech…. along with Baby Tara. She is clearly mentioned as Rajkumari Shukla in HFGK and also on her Records.
Many times there is a confusion in identifying these various Rajkumaris.

Rajkumari Shukla Ji was mainly an actress mostly doing elderly roles; she also came in Rattan (1944) as the heroine Karan Dewan Ji’s mother. She was not actually a prominent singer, she just sang this song for fun and because she could manage quite well. The heroine Ratnamala Ji was a famous actress for playback by Rajkumari (Banaraswali) Ji. This Rajkumari Ji was the outstanding singer and one of the first playback singers, among the topmost lead singers of 1940s. She, Amirbai Ji, Zohrabai Ji, Shamshad Begum Ji were mass playback producers and sang for most major heroines. Parul Ghosh Ji, Zeenat Begum Ji also sang a lot, all of whom were classically trained. Many other playback singers like Naseem Akhtar Ji, Hamida Bano Ji, Kalyani Ji(throughout 1940s), Lalita Deolkar Ji, Binapani Mukherjee Ji, Mohantara Ji, Uma Devi Ji, Sitara Kaunpuri Ji and Surinder Kaur Ji (of mid to late 1940s) were equally popular big names but sang not as many songs. There were also some great classical singers like Saraswati Rane Ji, Roshan Ara Begum Ji and Manik Verma Ji who playbacked few songs some of which became quite popular. These were the most major playback singers of 1940s. Most of them were also great singers of Hindustani classical music.

Atul ji,
PANGHAT(1943),was a Prakash pictures film, produced by Vijay Bhat and Directed by 2 Directors-K.J.Parmar and Mahesh chandra.Music was by S.N.Tripathi and lyrics by Pt.Indra and Ramesh Gupta.
The story is very interesting and will remind the readers of a popular and famous film of 1976 with melodious music.
Jamunaprasad Chaturvedi(Jeevan-who was Onkarnath Dhar in real life, but known as OK Dhar Kashmiri in the 30s) s/o Durgaprasad Chaturvedi,is an ortodox Bramhin Zamindar who has built a community Well, for water to everybody in the surrounding villages. His wife Mrs Shantidevi(Leela) and he are popular. When his daughter Radha grows up,he fixes her marriage with Mohan(Umakant Desai) son of Trivedi,a big businessman from other village.
Kiran,s/o Ganga prasad arrives instead of mohan and is welcomed by them.kiran is loved by Jamunaprasad ,his wife AND also Radha. After some time when the real identity of Kiran is revealed he is refused by Jamuna and his wife and he is suggested in various ways to leave. Then Mohan arrives and realises the mistake but finally sacrifices for the sake of lovers and the end is good.
By now,it must be clear that the story is same as that of CHITCHOR(1976)by Amol Palekar and Zarina Wahab.
Rajkumari has done the role of Jyoti,Heroine’s friend and the Heroine Radha is Alaknanda.Kirankumar is Sushil kumar.
