Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ta ra ri aa ra ri

Posted on: December 25, 2011

If 24th december was the birthday of Rafi then his close musical associate Naushad was not too far behind. Naushad was born on 25th december !

So today (25th december) is the day when we in this blog will pay our musical tributes to Naushad, the great pioneer in the field of Hindi movie music.

To Naushad goes the credit of bringing Hndi movie music to the ordinary public. Those were the days when Hindi movie music was elitist, as it was based on classical music and was aimed at those musical lovers who were well versed in classical music. Naushad decided to make use of folk music instead of classical music. And the result was spectacular. S D Burman found his cook singing Jab tumhi chale pardes in his kitchen while making chapatis. This song was from Naushad’s “Rattan” (1944) and it was based on folk music of UP. S D Burman and others quickly understood the pulse of the public and they too jumped into the bandwagon of creating music for the masses.

At the same time, western music too was making its entry in Hindi movie music. And it is interesting to realise that the same music directors who were creating folk music based songs, were also coposing western music based songs.

Naushad, who pioneered the use of folk music i Hindi movies has also created western music based songs.

Here is a rare and special song composed by Naushad. This song from “Daastaan” (1950) is rare because

(1) it is a Naushad composition based on western music
(2) This song , which is a Rafi Suraiyya duet is picturised on Raj Kapoor and Suraiyya, and that makes it one of the few occasions when Raj Kapoor lip synced in Rafi’s voice
(3) This was a rare occasion for Suraiyya to sing a western music based song
(4) This was the only occasion when Raj Kapoor and Suraiyya acted together in a Hindi movie.

All these interesting facts, as well as the lyrics of this song were sent to me by Mr Sadanand Kamath. So here is this rare and wonderful song. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist of this song.

Song-Ta ra ri aa ra ri (Daastaan)(1950) Singers-Rafi, Suraiyya, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Naushad

Lyrics(Provided by Sadanand Kamath)

ta ra ri,
aa ra ri,
aa ra ri
ta ra ri,
aa ra ri,
aa ra ri
ye saawan rut,
tum aur hum
ta ra ra ra ram
ta ra ra ra ram
ta ram pam
ta ram pam
ta ra ram pam
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hm hmm

ta ra ri,
aa ra ri,
aara ri
tar a ri,
aa ra ri,
aa ra ri
dil naache re chhamchham chham
ta ra ra ra ram
ta ra ra ra ram

ta ram pam
ta ram pam
ta ra ram pam
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm

aankhon mein tum leke pyaar aa gaye
gulshan mein bankar bahaar aa gaye
dekho wo kaliyon ko aayi hansi
baadal ki chhaaya mein naache khushi

tu hai to phir kya hai gham
ta ra ra ra ram
ta ra ra ra ram
ta ram pam
ta ram pam
ta ra ram pam
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm

kehta hai dil mera chaliye wahaan
har din ho saawan hi saawan jahaan
ham tum ho rimjhim ka ik saaz ho
bas teri aur meri aawaaz ho

gaayen mil mil ke hardam
ta ra ra ra ram
ta ra ra ra ram
ta ram pam
ta ram pam
ta ra ram pam
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
ta ra ri,
aa ra ri,
aa ra ri

This song sounds very very familiar, is there a well known Western number with the same tune?
