Nainon se naina laage

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Thanks to Arun ji for prodding the memory cells. Here is another wonderful melody from the film ‘Light House’ (1958). This time around, it is a song of exuberance, executed in a very fast tempo. It is the same team that has given two melancholic gems, “Tang Aa Chuke Hain Kashmakash-e-Zindagi Se Hum” and “Kis Jagah Jaayen Kis Ko Dikhlaayen” – lyrics from the pen of Sahir Ludhianvi, music under the stewardship of N Dutta, and the wonderful rendition by Asha Bhosle.

The film is produced under the banner of Sippy Films, and is directed by GP Sippy. The main star cast is Ashok Kumar, Nutan, Nigar Sultana, Johnny Walker, Naazi, Rajan Kapoor, Master Pakku, Shiela Vaz etc. The songs are written by Sahir Lundhianvi, and the music composition is by N Dutta. Only the audio of this song is available, so it is not feasible to comment on the on-screen performance of this song. I request other knowledgeable readers to please comment on the picturization of this song.

Arun ji has provided a brief synopsis of this film. The following is adapted from his comments.

“Light House (1958) has absolutely divine music. Coincidence is that both songs which featured here so far are sad and soulful, but there are many other light songs in this film, equally melodious. And if there is Johnny Walker in the film, light songs are eminently present – we have, “Gumba rumba gelo o gelo”, “Chima chima chim chima”, “Tu kala mai gori’, and “Nainon se naina laage”. Sahir Ludhianvi, known for his meaningful songs, has some of his rare ‘anokhe bol’ lyrics in this film.

This is a story of Bela (Nutan), accused and stamped to be inauspicious and a panauti. She stays in the tower house in a village, on the west coast. She always stays indoor with her ailing father and a small boyfriend Pikkoo. She is dreaded in the village as many of her relatives died in accidents. And so the village people think she is accursed. One day, Ashok (Ashok kumar), a fugitive from city who is running from a crime he did not commit. He comes with his girlfriend Neela (Nigar Sultana) and stays in a local hotel. Once he comes face to face with Bela. Attracted by her charm, he follows her, befriends her and learns about her past and present. Ashok makes her bold, fearless and ready to face the outside world, but while doing so falls in her love. Narielwala (Johnny Walker),the hotel manager is an old admirer of Neela, but Neela is now jealous of Bela. She tries to kill her. Ashok and Pikkoo save Bela. Neela is exposed. She is also behind the crime Ashok did not commit in the city. Finally Neela is whisked away by police and Ashok and Bela live peacefully forever !

As I listened to this song again today, realized that this is a difficult song to render. The pitch is high, the tempo is maintained very fast, and this continues for the entire song. Singing the complete song in a single sitting would be really a great effort.

Enjoy this rapid paced delightful song of a heart that has just found love.

nainon se naina laagey, wo kyaa kahenge aagey
main jaan gayee re

The meeting of our glances
(Told me everything)
And I came to know
What he would say next

hawaa’on ne chhedaa bahaaron ka taraanaa
jawaani ne paayaa adaa’on ka khazanaa
saajan ka bahaanaa mein jaan gayee re

The winds are playing the melody of spring
Youth has discovered a treasure of poise and grace
And the excuses he makes
Now I have come to know

mujhe aaj duniyaa dulhan jaisi laagey
jo surat mein dekhoon sajan jaisi laagey
hai kyaa dil lagaanaa mein jaan gayee re

The whole world seems bedecked like a bride
I see the reflection of my beloved
In every face that I see
What it means to give your heart
Now I have come to know

mehakti hain saansen, thhiraktey hain paaon
padi mere tan pe jo sainyyaan ji ki chhaaon
khushi ka taraanaa mein jaan gayee re

My breath is fragrant like flowers
And my feet, they dance on their own
Since the shadow of my beloved
Fell on me
The wonderful songs of love
Now I have come to know

The detailed synopsis means that Arunji has seen the movie? Does he have the copy/ spareable copy. I am one of the rare (as looks to be from the activities) of Nutanji, and am trying to collect her movies. This amongst many are simply not traceable in market (as of course is not unexpected, considering the current genre and their interest, more in action than in acting, exposure of the body and not the soul). I have tried to convert, without success some to those times. Coming to the subject/ agenda can Arunji/ any other person please share/ inform the source from which it can be procured? Along with some other rare movies of Nutanji of those times, including her first movie (sadly missing in market).
