Today is 26th january, the 63rd republic day of India.
For this blog, it is the fourth republic day. During these three past Republic day occasions as well on the three occasions of Independence day of India, this blog has covered most well known patriotic songs from Hindi movies.
In fact, some well known non film patriotic songs have also been covered in the past.
During 1960s, when India faced aggression from her neighbours, many movie personalities went to the front to encourage the Army men, and they also organised programmes to raise money for the war efforts.
A few memorable non filmy songs were created at that time which went on to become iconic songs. I have already discussed the most well known of these patriotic song, namely Ae mere watan ke logon zaraa aankh mein bhar lo paani .
Here is another well known non filmy patriotic song from that era. This song is sung by Rafi and chorus. This song is written by Jaan Nisaar Akhtar and music is composed by Khayyam.
On the occasion of 63rd Republic day of India, I greet all Indians a very happy Republic day.

kafan = shroud dakhan = variant of ‘dakshin’, meaning south; in context – Deccan Gang = river Ganga Jaman = river Jamuna
(NOTE: the line ‘baandhe huye sar se kafan’ means wearing the shroud, the burial cloth already. This is an oft used metaphor in literature, meaning ‘to be prepared to die’).

Since my childhood days and since i hear this song in a T’series deshbhakti songs’ album i was searching for this song’s film, only to know now that this is non-filmi song. BUT really a great ‘patriotic’ song to fill our hearts with passion and love for our great country!!!

I know it has been ages since I commented here, so first let me wish all of you a very happy New Year!
In the years following the Sino – Indian conflict, ’63 – ’65 or so, we had a number of these non-filmi patriotic songs which could be heard all the time over the loudspeakers during the Republic Day parade rehearsals and Independence Day in Delhi (I don’t know about other cities, but Delhi was flooded with these songs in those days). I remember going to see some movie and the newsreel, which used to be shown at the start of movies, showed this song, and it was filmed on three leading actors, two of whom were Dev Anand and Rajendra Kumar. I cannot remember if the third person was Raj Kapoor or Dilip Kumar – does anyone else here remember? (In other words, is there any one else from my age group here?!!!) Because it had three real actors in it, I thought this song was from some movie and it was only later that I came to know that this was a non-filmi song.
