Shivji bihaane chale paalki sajaay ke

Posted on: January 22, 2011

This song from “Munimji” (1955) was a long pending farmaish of the readers. This song is a different kind of song. It is a stage song that describes the wedding of Lord Shiva with Parvati.

The song is sung by Hemant Kumar and chorus and it is performed by several artists on the stage. One can see Nalini Jaiwant and Pran among the spectators of the performance. The actress playing Parvati on stage is also Nalini Jaiwant (I hope my eyes are not deceiving me). I request my knowledgeable readers to throw light on the actors in he picturisation.
PS-The actress playing Parvati is Ameeta. I thank Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh for helping me identify her.

The lyrics are written by Shailendra and music is composed by S D Burman. I do not think most Hindi movie lovers will be able to understand many words because these words are spoken only in Bihar and eastern UP. They are in effect “Bihari” words, though experts like Santosh Ojha will tell us that there is no Bihari language as such.

Most people involved in the creation of this song had no connection with “Bihari” lingo, but they have done a great job in creating this masterpiece. I have tried to get the lyrics as accurately as I can, but there may be errors and I request “Bihari” language experts to point out the errors in the lyrics. One needs to be an expert in the lingo as well as in Bihari weddings to be able to fathom several words of this song.

Of course, one can enjoy this song even without fully understanding the lyrics. So here is this song from “Munimji” (1955) for the enjoyment of the readers of this blog.

This is a very good and rare song.It took me on a nostalgic trip.
The actress as Parvati,in the song is AMITA (Heroine of Tumsa Nahi dekha and few others). Before TND,and also afterwards, Amita regularly featured in Mythological films before eclipsing.

Thanks for identifying the actress. of course she is Amita, now that you have helped me identify her.

What a fantastic song!!! Have fallen madly in love with it. Love the lyrics, Hemantda’s voice, Sachinda’s music – and Ameeta, of course. Have I ever told you that I LOVE Ameeta? I would see a movie of hers for her alone!!! Have seen Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Goonj Uthi Shehnai, Samson, Mere Mehboob, Ma Beta, Dekh Kabira Roya and a few other movies…and she’s just lovely in all of them. 🙂

I just love this song, esp Dev Anand and his fake mustache and the huge birthmark and the ridiculous cap and glasses – what a weak disguise! Shivji’s dance with his snake-like undulations and his followers with their costumes are fabulous! I saw the movie and it was a lot of fun, esp the song where Dev Anand and Nalini Jaywant go with Pran and they get him to sing, and of course he cannot sing, and a donkey appears on the scene, and they get him to sit on the donkey and the donkey goes off with Pran, leaving the two lovers to finish their song without his unnecessary presence! Can you tell how much I have enjoyed this movie just from this lengthy paragraph? Wish they would make more movies like this one.

Indeed I have also enjoyed reading your lengthy paragraphs, as do others. That is why I and Raja keep pestering you to write guest posts on a few of your favourite songs. 😀

Let me know which of my requests (for romantic songs)is still pending, so I can come up with something. At least it will take my mind off something else – and I will tell you about that when that event comes to pass – that is supposed to have happened already and is keeping us all in suspense at my house!

Male dancer doing shiv ji role is also very good. Does any one know his name?

The lead dancer is Sachin Shankar. He was a cousin of the late great Uday Shankar and Ravi Shankar.
He formed Sachin Shnakar Ballet Unit in Mumbai to propagate the unique dance form created by the great choreographer Shri Uday Shankar which was a wonderful mix of balletic moves with the lasya of Odissi and the steps of Kathak thrown in for good measure. This troupe would go on to create and perform a number of ballets The music for these ballets was composed Pt. Ravi Shankar.
Hence, you will notice the sophistication of the choreography which is quite unlike anything seen in Hindi cinema,
A word about the language of the song. There is no such thing as “Bihari” language. This song is Shailendra’s creative mix of Hindi and Bhojpuri which he knew well.

Thank you very much for identifying Sachin Shankar as Shankarji in lead role and wonderful performance!

Thanks for the details.

I know that there is nothing like Bihari language that is why I have mentioned this word within inverted commas.

A ‘must’ song for chitrahaar around Mahashivaratri in Doordarshan days. Plucked it out from memory this year and have been listening to it like a prayer. Noticed that different pieces of music (when ‘naachey bhoot shaitan ho’ OR when Shivji is getting married, etc….) would later become the stereotype background music of the ‘occasion’. Not sure if this song and hence SD is the original creator of this stereotypicality ? 🙂

It’s indeed a masterpiece. Hemant Kumar and SD Burman are an awesome combination. If they had access to today’s tech, I can only imagine what they could have turned this into.

Beautiful translation. Thank you so much for your dedicated and passionate work. Thanks for saving the grace of such a gem which is though generally known by the shaivite Northern Indian belt but is losing grip as the generations succeed and is growing more and more rare.
