It was in 1949 that Lata sang a song about “Laal dupatta”and that song, namely Hawa me udta jaaye(Barsaat) has become a much loved timeless classic.
Ten years later, Lata sang a song about “dhaani chunariya”. This song is extremely melodious and sweet, but this time the movie as well as the song failed to make ripples and by now this song has ended up as an obscure song.
This song is from a movie called “Madhu” (1959) which was a Maya Art Pictures movie. It was directed by Gyan Mukherji and S Bannerji. Starcast included names like Karan Dewan, Meena Kumari, Kumkum, Tuntun, Jagdish Sethi, Sailen Bose etc.
This lovely song is written by Naqsh Llayalpuri. Music is composed by Roshan.
From the starcast, one can safely guess that the song was picturised on Meena Kumari.
PS-Do not take the translations appearing on the link at face value. They do not make sense at least to me.

One thing for sure absolutely no one can match her depth of feeling on these tunes the way she has here….the gorgeous angelic voice of her brings an emotional honesty and depth to this piece that no one has done since.
Lata backward in Hindi…(reverse) is “TAAL”. that says all. 🙂

MADHU-1959 was a movie produced by Ghanashyam Das Under the banner of Maya Art Pictures.It was directed by a duo of Gyan Mukherjee and S.Bannerjee-who had directed many hit films like Parvarish-58,Dillagi-66,Zindagi aur khwaab-61,Preet na jaane reet-66 etc.
The story,dialogues and s/play were done by Gyan mukherjee himself.
This film was based on a story from ‘ Golpo Songroho ‘, written by Bengal’s very well known and prolific and decorated writer Premendra Mitra(1904-1988).Mitra had written hundreds of books which included Rhymes,fairy tales,Ghost stories,Fun stories,Sci and Fiction,Novels and short stories.Mitra indulged in Bengali films too and had directed 14 hit films and had written stories,dialogues,s/plays and lyrics of 4 hit films.He was immensely decorated with Sahitya Academi Award,Padmashri,Nehru award from USSR,D.Litt,Gold Medals,Vidyasagar and Desikottam Puraskar from Vishwa Bharati besides many others.
The film had Music by Roshan and lyrics were by Naksh Lyllpuri,prem Dhawan and Shailendra.

The story of Madhu is a story which was used many times before and afterwards also and it had nothing new in it.I am surprised why it was made into a film at all.No wonder it did not succeed.
Madhu(Meena kumari) a daughter of village Purohit and Vijay(Karan Dewan) son of the Zamindar are in deep love.When Zamindar comes to know of this,he orders Vijay to go to Lucknow and tells the purohit to take some money and marry Madhu off to someone else immediately.
Vijay escapes from the train,returns to Madhu’s house and convinces purohit to marry him to Madhu immediately,promising to change Zamindar’s mind.They are married and celebrate ‘Suhag Raat’ also.Then Vijay returns to lucknow.The wicked Munim who had accompanied him to Lucknow,informs Zamindar,who rushes to lucknow.He intercepts the letters of the newlywedsTthus Madhu is stranded,without any news from Vijay and Vijay does not know that she is carrying his child.
Zamindar fixes Vijay’s marriage to another girl.Vijay rushes to his village only to find that due to social stigma of unwed motherhood,Madhu has left the town in his search.Also his friend Shambhu is in lucknow to find him.
The rest of the story takes the beaten track like husband-wife missing each others,the father falling sick,Madhu nursing him to recovery,change of heart by the father and reunion of the husband and Wife with a child as a bonus.
Except for MK’s acting and Roshan’s music there was nothing in the film for which anybody should view it.
