Sharaabi sharaabi ye saawan ka mausam

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I am not a keen watcher of period movies but do buy VCDs/DVDs of such movies mainly for watching the fabulous songs. Recently, I watched NOOR JEHAN (1967) with a view to ascertaining whether the VCD contained the only Lata Mangeshkar song ‘ raat ki mehfil sooni sooni’ in it. In this process, I saw the entire movie. As I expected, the song was excluded from the VCD. In fact, it is said that this song was not included in the original print of the film. Despite some mindless cuts in the VCD version affecting the continuity of the screen play and the bad quality of video, I did not feel a total let down by the film. The story which I knew from the history books was interesting one from the point of view of cinematic presentation. The film was shot on lavish sets and outdoor locations in keeping with the period movie theme.

he cast included Meena Kumari and Pradeep Kumar in lead roles with Rahman, Johny Walker, Helen, Sheikh Mukhtar, Nigar Sultana, Lalita Pawar and Veena in supporting roles. The film was produced under the banner of Zenith Productions. On the VCD cover, A K Nadiadwala has been credited as the producer of the film but it is widely believed that Sheikh Mukhtar was the de facto producer of the film. In the credit titles of the film, he has, however, been credited as the Executive Producer, while the name of the producer has not been mentioned. The film was directed by M Sadiq. The songs were written by Shakeel Badayuni which were set to music by Roshan – a rare combination.

Despite a good story, screen play and dialogues supplemented by some beautiful songs, the film failed at the box office. Probably, the committed fans of Sheikh Mukhtar were not yet ready to see him as a producer and actor in such type of films. His fans were used to watching his films with ‘good triumphs over the evil’ subject.

Furthermore, during the second half of 60s, the audience taste for the movies had changed with the emergence of the lead actors like Shammi Kapoor with his yahoo image and Jitendra with jumping jack image. With all his life savings gone into the production of this film, Sheikh Mukhtar became a debt ridden man and his tryst with Bollywood almost came to an end. In 1970, he migrated to Pakistan taking with him the original prints of NOOR JEHAN with the intention of releasing the film there. Unfortunately for him, the Government of Pakistan did not allow the film’s release. It was only after his death that the film was released. The film became a hit but he was not there to reap the harvest.

The song I have selected from this film for discussion is not of Lata Mangeshkar which I was searching for in my VCD but ‘sharaabi sharaabi ye saawan kaa mausam’ sung by Suman Kalyanpur mainly because the video clip of this song is available. The song is picturised on Meena Kumari and is preceded by Helen’s beautiful Kathak dance. In the VCD version, one stanza from the song is deleted but the audio link contains the full song. One song from this film have already been discussed in the blog. This is one of those Suman Kalyanpur song where listeners can mistakenly identify the voice with that of Lata Mangeshkar.

Song-Sharaabi sharaabi ye saawan ka mausam (Noorjehaan)(1967) Singer-Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Roshan

Lyrics

sharaabi sharaabi ye saawan kaa mausam
khudaa ki kasam khoobsoorat na hotaa
agar is mein rang-e-mohabbat na hotaa
sharaabi sharaabi ye saawan ka mausam

suhaani suhaani ye koyal ki kooken
uthaati hain seene mein reh reh ke hooken
chhalkati hai masti ghane baadalon se
ulajhti hain nazren haseen aanchalon se
ye purnoor manzar
ye purnoor manzar
ye rangeen aalam
khudaa ki kasam khoobsoorat na hotaa
agar is mein rang-e-mohabbat na hotaa
sharaabi sharaabi ye sawaan ka mausam

gulaabi gulaabi ye phoolon ke chehre
ye rimjhim ke moti
ye boondon ke sehre
kuchh aisi bahaar aa gayee hai chaman mein
ki dil kho gayaa hai
isi anjuman mein
ye mehki nasheeli
ye mehki nasheeli hawaaon kaa parcham
khudaa ki kasam khoobsoorat na hotaa
agar is mein rang-e-mohabbat na hotaa
sharaabi sharaabi ye saawan ka mausam

ye mausam salonaa
ajab gul khilaaye
umangen ubhaare
umeeden jagaaye
wo betaabiyaan dil se takraa rahi hain
ke raaton ki neenden udi jaa rahi hain
ye sahar-e-jawaani
ye sahar-e-jawaani
ye khwaabon kaa aalam
khudaa ki kasam khoobsoorat na hotaa
agar is mein rang-e-mohabbat na hotaa
sharaabi sharaabi ye saawan ka mausam

kamath ji,
Thanks for info on Noorjehan.
Here are some more details.
Shaikh Mukhtar was a wonder in Hindi Film Industry. When Hindi film heros were handsome and singing and running around trees, this rugged,
6′ 5″ tall, rough faced strong man became one of the 3 Heros in Ek Hi Raasta,in those days. His luck was such that despite a very “Aadimanav” face,he still costarred with the most beautiful actresses of those days.He was perticularly paired with the beautiful Begum Para in many films.Due to his physique and image,he starred in stunts,Historical and mystery films.
SM was leading a very comfortable life, but the luck exausted and he invested hugh amounts of money in producing his dream film Noorjehan in 1967.The film bombed at the Box office and SM was in neck deep debts.Income Tax was also after him.He used to stay with different friends to avoid the financers.Sheikh Mukhtar-a person who had an impeccable reputation in the industry for his integrity and his firmness to keep away from all vices(no drinking, gambling or smoking)-had to one day run away stealthily to Pakistan on one night flight, like a thief chased by police !( He had NOT migrated.)
He took all the prints of his all films(not only Noorjehan) while leaving. On reaching Pakistan,he started contacting Govt Officials to allow him to release his films in Pakistan. That was the time when East Pakistan was to be liberated and BanglaDesh was being born. The Govt. was not in a mood to allow an Indian to come here and make money. They simply went on promising him.
Meanwhile,Altaf Bros,Distributors of Sunrise Films bought the rights of all his films. While making rounds of Govt offices,SM became very ill and died in Lahore,in a short illness and unsung.Just after 6 months,Noorjehan was released in Pakistan and the distributors made millions.

You said what I felt but was not sure – SM fled to Pakistan to avoid his creditors. It is also becoming clear as to why A K Nadiadwala has been accredited on the VCD cover as the producer of the film. He may have been the major financier of the film.

Thanks Prakashchandra ji for the clip for a different reason
.
My daughter had presented me a set of Geetamala Ki Chhaon Mein – Vol 1 to 5 containing songs up to 1955 sometime in 2012. I had completely forgotten about this. Your link reminded about my possession.

These all people are found of putting their name everywhere, in ka to iman hi nahi hai.The film was released in Pakistan by special permission of President General Zia ul haq. Pls inquire before writting anything.
