I love you you love me

Posted on: April 27, 2012

“Barood” (1976) is a recent movie by the standards of this blog and still it has been all but forgotten by now.

This movie was a Jugnu Enterprises movie. It was produced by H S Bhattacharya, J C Bhagat and Jitu Thakur. The movie was directed by Pramod Chakravarty.

Starcast consisted of Rishi Kapoor, Shoma Anand, Ashok kumar,Ajit, Reena Roy,Prem Chopra, Madan Puri, Dr.Sriram lagoo,Sujit kumar, David Abraham, Raj Mehra,Asit Sen, Master Raju shreshtha,Rajendranath, Om Shivpuri, Manmohan, Birbal, Asrani,Azaad with Dharmendra and Hema Malini in special appearances.

The movie was a moderate success. I never watched this movie because in my opinion it was a puppy love story with no substance. The fact that this movie lies forgotten by now in a way supports my contention that there was nothing much to write home about in this movie.

The songs of this movie have also been forgotten by now. Here is one such song from this movie. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. It is picturised on Reena Roy and Rishi Kapoor. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and music is composed by s D Burman. This movie was one of the last movies with S D Burman’s compositions as S D Burman had died before the movie could be released.

The lyrics of this song mostly consist of the words “I love you you love me” may have to write in his long career as a lyricist. 🙂

The song is picturised on foreign locations. It was one of the first such movies in 1970s to be shot extensively on foreign locations and this fact was much publicised too in media at that time. Later on movies like “The Great Gambler” (1979) and “Duniya Meri Jeb Mein” (1981) were also shot on foreign locations.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

I’ve seen this movie – by default. 🙂
It was the last day of summer school, summer vacation was starting. Those were half-day school, so we would be out of school by 12:30 or 1.00 p.m.
A few of my friends and I suddenly decided to go for “Geet Gaata Chal” (which had been playing for many weeks in a hall a few km away). We did not get a bus, so we had to walk those km – in the scorching heat.

When we got to the hall, the movie had changed from Geet Gaata Chal to Barood. We’d never heard of the movie but thought we shouldn’t let our long walk go waste. So we bought “softy” ice-cream 😉 and saw the movie.

We were not impressed by the movie. It starts off ok but then drifts.

I do not remember this song (I love you, you love me) from the movie – but I do remember two songs. One, the Hemant Kumar song early on (father to son) – and the other, “samundar samundar” which enjoyed some popularity at that time.

Talking of foreign location extravaganza in the 1970s, surely Aashiq Hoon Baharon Ka with Rajesh and Zeenat must rank right up there. Very expensive film at that time, superflop.

Yes, I had forgotten about “Aashiq Hon Bahaaron Ka”.
Walking a few kilometres in Summer, I can feel for you. But those were the days when you were young and fit and raring to go- all for the noble cause of watching movies. I have in fact likewise walked for several kilometres on foot in summer of 1980s to watch movies. I could walk many kilometres on foot those days, come rain or shine.

Another melodious Lata solo song
“Dil kaanton mein uljhaayaa hai, ek dushman pe pyaar aayaa hai”(But beware shoma anand is there in two piece dress, which doesn`t look good on her and which spoils the beauty of the song)is there in the movie.

I love the other song from this movie – Samundar samundar yahan se wahan tak, yeh maujon ki chadar, bichi asmaan tak, mere mehrban meri hadd hai kahan tak. Lovely. This song was also played often on the radio.

I dont think Shoma Anand worked in any other movie after this, not as a heroine atleast. She had a very long inning on the TV though, as a mother mostly. It is hard to imagine her playing a young playful heroine in skimpy clothes, as she was in this movie.

actually i can remember Shoma Anand as a heroine in “Patita” with Mithun Chakravarthy and Raj Kiran as her heroes. i think there was one other hero also in that movie.
then she has done quite a few movies as second heroine to Hema Malini “Azaad” for example. after which she moved on to being the wicked sis in law in a whole lot of family drama movies. but i loved her best as “Bina” in the Balaji teleserial—- Hum Paanch.

Another hero of Patita(remake of famous Malayalam Adult hit Movie Her Nights) is Vikram, In fact Shoma Anand was protege of Producer, director Pramod Chakravarthy, who used to cast Hema Malini in his movies(Dream Girl,Azaad,Naya zamana,Jugnu, special appearance in barood,Jyoti,Nastik)

Somewhere read Hema Malini`s Mother Jaya Chakravarthy and Pramod chakravarthy are related, Am I right ?

Pramod Chakravarthy casted Shoma Anand in Barood,Azaad,Jagir(opp.Mithun also starring Dharmendra,Zeenat,Danny)

Pramode Chakravorthy, after casting Hema malini in most of his movies directed this movie launching his favourite protege SHOMA ANAND
(At that time shoma anand wanted to be next Hema malini).
Later on also he promoted her in Jagir(1984) Azaad(1978).

Shom Anand, later on appeared in an important role in
Patita(1980-In this movie again she was the bold heroine. This movie is a remake of famous Malayalam “adults only-sex oriented movie” Movie HER NIGHTS, which created furore down south. Mithun, raj kiran, vikram acted opposite her)
she acted opposite rishi kapoor in Coolie as a second heroine, Then onwards she became stereoptyped evil bahu.

And most recently she entertained as finicky wife of Paresh rawal in HUNGAMA

She was also the mother in the serial “Hum Paanch”.

Thank you for all this information, Prakashchandra jee. I had no idea she worked in so many movies. She was no where close to Hema Malini, that is for sure.

Ava ji/Prakash ji,
SHOMA ANAND acted in 45 films from 1976 to 1994.Her last film-‘Swarg se pyara ghar hamara’-1994 also featured Rishi kapoor along with Shashi and Meenakshi etc.
she was heroine in several films and did other roles in rest of the films. As Atul ji stated, she was a comic fixture in many sitcoms on TV.

Prakash ji is always giving us and updating with authentic information , thanks,
