The tribulations of life keep jumping from one whirlwind to another. Here is a bit of information that I should have shared on the blog some time back. So there is this loosely knit group of music lovers in Delhi, and they are planning a year long stint of programs to celebrate the 100th year of Indian Cinema.
This coming Sunday, a program called ‘100 Years of Indian Cinema’ is being presented in Delhi. The main presenter is going to be Nalin ji Shah, who has already arrived in Delhi. Shri Harmandir ji is also reaching here on Saturday. It is a day long program, and the highlight of the day is the 4 hours long program by Nalin ji, titled “Yaadon Ka Safar”. In this program, Nalin ji presents the history of Hindi film music, starting from, 1931 to the present, using the songs themselves. He speaks about the various trends and phases in the history of Hindi film music, as well as talks about the various known and less known personalities associated with films as music directors, lyricists and singers. So this week, I have been kind of tied up with some organizational and planning activities for this program.
(NOTE: In case there are any readers in Delhi, or who may be visiting Delhi on the 6th May, and are interested to see this program, please leave a comment to this write up, with your email address, and I will get back with more information. Entry for the program is free, by invitation passes).
In this write up, I am talking about a non-film song, by a singer who has not yet made a debut here in this category.
The tradition of non-filmi songs sung by the mainline singers in the industry is very very rich and varied, although not as prolific as the filmi songs. There are numerous examples of non-film songs that are tremendous both in the lyrical as well as melodic qualities. In my opinion, it is an art form that is more pure and refined that the filmi songs, for this non filmi genre is created without any commercial compulsions. No, I am not trying to put down the filmi song, but it surely is a matter of experience that the non film songs, though less in number, comparatively carry a deeper emotional impact, and occupy a special place in personal memory.
This here is a non film offering by Geeta Dutt, her first on this blog. Why I selected this one? Well, this is one of those wonderful memories that I have carried with me from my radio listening days as a child, from many years ago. A song that is tuned to such a delightful melody, and it has been sung by Geeta ji with so much verve and spirit – it really makes a very lively listening. A song that is bound to soar up the sagging spirits of any doleful heart.
The superb music is composed by Nikhil Ghosh, and the beautiful words are written by Bharat Vyas. This is such a lovely song that whenever I put it on to hear it, I end up replaying it 5, 7, 10 times over and over again. Enjoy this oh so lovely gem of a creation, that must rank right up there with the best Geeta Dutt has rendered.
haule haule hawaayein dolen, kaliyon ke ghoonghat kholen
aa jaa mere mann ke raja, pihoo pihoo papihaa boley
Lazily, oh so lazily
The breeze ambles by
Nudging open the veils of tiny buds
Please come (and join me)
O master of my heart, my love
The partridge bird calls
kaare kaare baadraa chhaaye, kaun sandesaa laaye
saawan suhaavan aayaa, piyaa mere tum na aaye
The dark clouds assemble in heavens
I wonder what message do they bring
The enchanting monsoon is here
And I am just waiting
For you are still not with me
(NOTE: The tradition of clouds brining messages, harks back to the time Kaalidas wrote the famous play “Meghdoot”, where in Yaksharaj, who is cursed for separation from his beloved spouse, endeavors to send her a message using the clouds as the message carrier.)
birahee gagan roye, mere do nayan roye
piyaa tum paas nahin, kahaan kis des khoye
The sad sky, it cries tears of sorrow
And so do my two eyes
For you are not here with me, my love
Wonder which land you are lost in
ghan ghan baadraa baaje, chhann chhann paayla baaje
chhaayee chhaayee haaye bahaar, tum bin jiyaa na laage
The thundering lightning in the clouds
Catches with the tinkle of my anklets
Refreshing weather of rains
And the rejuvenated plants and flowers
Make it feel like spring all over again
And yet,
My heart is lonely, restless
And pines for you
