Maare gaye gulfaam aji haan maare gaye gulfaam

Posted on: May 6, 2012

We have discussed a couple of songs from “Teesri Kasam” (1966) recently. In the course of that discussion, I have learnt the story of the novel called “Maare Gaye Gulfaam” which was picturised as “Teesri Kasam”. The movie has faithfully reproduced the flavour of the novel. The movie failed to find favour with the majority of the moviegoers during its first release, but the re-releases have seen the movie doing better.

The music of this movie has contributed much to make the movie popular among movie watchers. The songs of this movie do not dazzle the senses, rather they tug at the heart strings.

As many as eight songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. According to HFGK, this movie has nine songs in it. Going by that list, there is only one song left to be discussed and that song is “Maare Gaye Gulfaam”, which incidentally happens to be the title of the novel that the movie is based on.

This song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Waheeda Rehman as a nautanki song. The song is written by Hasrat Jaipuri. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

The lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

With this song, the blog now has all the songs from this movie for which records were issued. But one can see from the discussions on the previous songs of this movie that the movie has a few more songs which were picturised in the movie but their records were not issued. In other words, this movie has more songs than those listed in HFGK because HFGK lists only those songs for which records were issued. This also tells us the interesting fact that there are more number of Hindi movie songs than what are listed in HFGK, because songs that appeared in the picturisation but not as gramophone records are not accounted for in the venerable book. That is food for thought for music lovers and certainly for us in this blog. So I think there is a case for the new tag viz.”movie picturised but records not issued”.

Song-Maare gaye gulfaam (Teesri Kasam)(1966) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

maare gaye gulfaam
aji haan maare gaye gulfaam
maare gaye gulfaam
aji haan maare gaye gulfaam
ulfat bhi raas naa aayee
aji haan maare gaye gulfaam

ik sabzpari dekhi
aur dil ko ganwaa baithey
mastaanaa nigaahon par
phir hosh lutaa baithey
mastaanaa nigaahon par
phir hosh lutaa baithey
phir hosh lutaa baithey
kaahe ko main muskuraayee
aji haan maare gaye gulfaam
maare gaye gulfaam
aji haan maare gaye gulfaam

aabroo ki kathaari se
nainon ki dodhaari se
woh hoke rahe zakmee
ek baad-e-bahaari se
woh hoke rahe zakmee
ek baad-e-bahaari se
ek baad-e-bahaari se
ye zulf kyun lehraayee
aji haan maare gaye gulfaam
maare gaye gulfaam
aji haan maare gaye gulfaam

iss pyaar ki mehfil mein
woh aaye muqaabil mein
woh teer chale dil par
hulchal si huyee dil mein
woh teer chale dil par
hulchal si huyee dil mein
hulchal si huyee dil mein
chaahat ki sazaa paayee
aji haan maare gaye gulfaam
maare gaye gulfaam
aji haan maare gaye gulfaam
ulfat bhi raas naa aayee
aji haan maare gaye gulfaam

Atulji,
TEESARI kASAM was based on a short Hindi story, Teesri Kasam urf Mare Gaye Gulfam by Phaniashwar Nath ‘Renu’, a writer from the village of Shailendra. Hence Shailendra took its production in spite of advice to the contrary by Raj Kapoor. This film cost Shailendra his life. I see it once a month on my CD player and feel a true classic was made. It was directed by Bimal Roy’s son-in-law, Basu Bhattacharyya and assisted by Basu Chatterjee. Raj gave his career best performance, S-J gave memorable music, most of the songs were created in Raj’s cottage. Box-office failure was the result, but to film buffs like me, a very big THANK YOU to all those involved with the film.
