Agar bewafa tujhko pehchaan jaate

on:I first became aware of Prem Dhawan in 1970s as the lyricist of the immortal patriotic song Jahan daal daal par sone ki chidiya karti hai baseraa from Sikandar e Azam. This song was composed by Hansraj Bahl. Subsequently I got to hear a few more songs which were written by Prem Dhawan and composed by Hansraj Bahl. Then I became aware of “Shaheed” (1965) and “Pavitra Paapi”(1970), where Prem Dhawan was the lyricist as well as the music director. And what nice song these two movies had !
That was just about what I knew about Prem Dhawan. When I started this blog and began to discuss songs, I discussed a few well known abovementioned Prem Dhawan songs. Later, when I began to think in terms of centuries of artists, I thought that Prem Dhawan may not be among those artists who were going to complete centuries of their songs in this blog. But I kept discovering songs after songs that Prem Dhawan had written. Prem Dhawan became one of the first artists to complete his centuries of songs as a lyricist. With time, I as well as other regulars of this blog have come to know of the great songs that Prem Dhawan has contributed.
This blog at present has as many as 168 songs of Prem Dhawan as a lyricist, which shows that Prem Dhawan was one of the major lyricists of the golden era of Hindi movies. Many well known songs that we hear without being aware of their details are written by Prem Dhawan.
For example, iconic songs like Ae mere pyaare watan(Kabuliwaala), Chanda mama door ke(Vachan), Chal mere ghode tik tik tik (Chiraag Kahaan Roshni Kahaan) , Teri duniya se door chale hoke majboor (Zabak) etc are written by Prem Dhawan. Forgotten gems, viz Unse rippi tippi ho gayi (Agra Road) , Ek aana boot polish do aana tel maalish (Tel maalish Boot polish) etc were written by Prem Dhawan.
Today (7th may) is the death anniversary of this versatile lyricist cum music director who has given us many iconic songs that we all know very well without often knowing the name of the lyricist.
Here is yet another extremely well known creation of Prem Dhawan that we all love to listen to. The song is from an obscure movie called “Raat Ke andhere Mein”(1969). This movie was an Ashok Films production. This movie had Dev Kumar, Sonia Sahni, Dev Dutt, Shahida, Bhagwan, Murad, Madumati etc in it.
This song has two versions which are sung by Rafi and Lata respectively and picturised on Dev Kumar and Sonia Sahni.
This iconic song is written and composed by Prem Dhawan.
What a fantastic song ! This song is best heard in its full version. In case of Rafi’s version, the picturised version is incomplete whereas in case of Lata’s version, the picturised version is complete though the audio quality is slightly below par.
Some fake video of Rafi’s version of this song is available on YT which is shown picturised on Shashi Kapoor and Asha Parekh. Seeing how much disinformation can be there on internet, it is sad to see this fake video in circulation. Fortunately, we in this blog do our homework and are able to sift through such misleading material, but most music lovers who do not have time and inclination to check for the veracity of such matetials will be sadly misled.
Today (7th may) happens to be the death anniversary of Prem Dhawan. As a tribute to him, here is this iconic song from “Raat Ke Andhere Mein”(1969).
The lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

agar bewafa tujh ko
pehchaan jaate
khuda ki kasam
hum mohabbat na karte
jo maaloom hota ye
anjaam e ulfat to
dil ko lagaane ki
jurrat na karte
agar bewafa tujh ko
pehchaan jaate
khuda ki kasam
hum mohabbat na karte
jinhe tumne samjha
meri bewafaai
meri zindagi ki woh
majbooriyaan thhi
jinhe tumne samjha
hamaari mohabbat ka
ik imtihaan thha
ye do din ki thhodi si
jo dooriyaan thhin
jo dooriyaan thhin
agar sachchi hoti
mohobbat tumhari to
ghabraake tum yun
shikaayat na karte
agar bewafa tujh ko
pehchaan jaate
khuda ki kasam
hum mohabbat na karte
jo hum pe hai guzri
hum hi jaante hain
sitam kaun sa hai
nahin jo uthhaaya
jo hum pe hai guzri
nigahon mein phir bhi
rahi teri soorat
har ik saans mein tera
paighaam aaya
paighaam aaya
agar jaanate tum hi
ilzaam doge to
bhoole se bhi hum to
ulfat na karte
agar bewafa tujh ko
pehchaan jaate
khuda ki kasam
hum mohabbat na karte

jo uthh jaate pehle hi
aankhon se parde to

mera dil thha sheesha
hua choor aisa
ke ab laakh jodo to
jud na sakega

tu patthar ka but hai
pata gar ye hota to
dil tootne ki
shikaayat na karte
agar bewafa tujh ko
pehchaan jaate
khuda ki kasam
hum muhabbat na karte

Atulji,
Thanks for the information on Prem Dhawan. Like you have said, I knew all these hit songs of his during my childhood days. It was only when I heard the song Jahan Daal daal par sone ki on radio vividh bharti on Aug 15th, I heard his name for the first time. I think I was in 10th grade then.

Prem Dhawan was a good lyric writer, music director, singer and dancer. Mera rang de basanti chola of SHAHEED was my first introduction. I would like to know more about him.

This song wasn’t posted yet? I absolutely LOVE this song. Have known it from my childhood (without knowing its details – all I knew was it was a Rafi saab song). Later, I heard the Lata version of it too.
What a lovely song it is. Both versions are very good. And it is good you remembered Prem Dhawan – he has written many superb songs (like the ones you’ve listed). I remember first hearing of him when I saw Pavitra Paapi (1970) as a very young boy. Just love the songs of the movie – they are written by him. “Teri duniya se hoke majboor chala” is still one of my Kishore favourites.

Indeed Prem Dhawan became one of my favourite lyricists after I became aware of his creations. In “Pavitra Papi”, Prem Dhawan was the lyricist as well as music director too, just like he was in “Shaheed” (1965) as well as in the movie under discussion.
