“Kaala Paani”(1958) was a Navketan International Films Presentation. It was produced by Dev Anand and directed by Raj Khosla.
Music of this movie was one of its strong suits. I have discussed as many as four songs from this movie in the past. Here is another song from the movie.
This song is a mujra song with a difference. The picturisation shows Nalini Jaiwant lip syncing Asha Bhonsle in a slow tempo, with Dev Anand looking on. In the next stanza, the tempo of the song changes as does the lip syncer. A lady (I am unable to identify her and I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify her) begins performing mujra dance with her patron Agha looking on. In the next stanza,the tempo reversts to its sedate pace and the camera reverts back to Nalini Jaiwant and Dev Anand.
This switchover between slow tempo and faster tempo continues throughout the song. The only constant in all these too and fro changes is Asha Bhonsle’s voice. Yes, Asha Bhonsle sings for both the ladies and her voice transforms magically in this song from one stanza to the next.
This is a fantastic song which I heard (and watched) for the first time a few hours ago.
Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.
