Na na karte pyaar tumhi se kar baithhe

Posted on: August 6, 2012

Though Hindi movies covers lots of ground as far as various human feelings are concerned, but there is no doubt in any one’s mind that the predominant feeling depicted in Hindi movies is love between the hero and the heroine.

Typically, the hero sings a teasing song in the beginning, much to the chagrin of the heroine, but it does not take much longer for the heroine to see the true love of the hero. And that leads to a love song. Then the two of them develop misunderstanding, and that leads to a piano song where the hero sings about the bewafaai of his lady love. After a bhajan aung by the mother of one of them, and a roadside tamasha song sung by some small time actors, not to speak of a Helen cabarat that has no relevance to the main story, the misunderstanding gets cleared and that calls for yet another love song. There are a few standard scenes in a typical Hindi movie where a buddha arrives at the scene of the wedding and shouts- “Thehro, ye shaadi nahin ho sakti”, and a court scene where some other buddha arrives and shouts’ “Thetariye Judge Sahib, Mohan beqasoor hai, ye qatl Sohan ne kiya hai.” And the judge sees the errors of his ways right away and acquits Mohan and sentences Sohan to death right away.

The love songs of a typical movie often tend to be the most popular songs of the movie, though the usual melancholic song that also has its takers. Oldtimers who “appreciate” music tend to like melancholic songs of such movies, but youngsters prefer the love songs. Interestingly, young people like pre teens and teenagers who otherwise have no interest in the romance of the laed pair enjoy the love songs the most. I, as well as my fellow pre teen kids like Raja, Sudhir jee etc have enjoyed songs like “Aajkal tere mere pyar ke charche(Brahmachari), Badan pe sitaare lapete huye((Prince)(1969) and Mere sapnon ki raani kab aayegi tu (Aradhana) much more during late 1960s than grown ups who are supposed to be in the right age for appreciating such songs.

In the above mentioned songs became hugely popular then I am sure that pre teen kids like us played a big role in that:).

Apart from the above mentioned songs, there were some other fantastic love songs that pre teen kids like me enjoyed. One of these song was “Na Na Karte pyaar tumhi se kar baithhe”. At that time I did not know much about the song, but the song was so catchy that every tiny tot would sing this song like a nursery rhyme. IN any case Anand Bakshi, the lyricist of this song was accused by critics of doing little more than write rhyming lines in his lyrics. The fact that these rhyming lines became so popular almost every time was something that the critics of those days failed to acknowledge.

Here is this song from “Jab Jab Phool Khile” (1966), which was easily one of the most iconic love songs of those days.

This song is sung by Suman Kalyanpur and Rafi. It is picturised on Nanda and Shashi Kapoor. Kalyanji Anandji are the composers.

The song is picturised on some of the most well known land marks of Bombay. I cannot help but wonder how the movie makers were able to shoot this song on Marine Drive (I hope I have got the location right) in day time. I suppose that the population was much lower those days but still there were millions of people in Bombay even them.

The same location was incidentally also used in the song Rimjhim gire saawan(Manzil)(1979) more than one decade later.

The lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt, who as a fellow pre teen must have also enjoyed this song a lot those days.

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

na na karte
na na karte
pyaar tumhi se kar baithe
na na karte
pyaar tumhi se kar baithe
karna tha inkaar
magar ikraar
tumhi se kar baithe
na na karte
pyaar tumhi se kar baithe
na na karte
pyaar tumhi se kar baithe

dekhoji bhari hai
hazaaron tumne aahen
tab kahin hamne
achha
tab kahin hamne
milaayi hain nigaahen
tumse bhi haseen hai
tumhaara ye bahaana
tumne hi to hamko
sikhaaya dil lagaana
seekha hai dildaar
tumhi se pyaar
tumhi se kar baithe
ae ae
na na karte
aha
na na karte pyaar
tumhi se kar baithe

karna thha inkaar
magar ikraar
tumhi se kar baithe
na na karte
pyaar tumhi se kar baithe

hum ko hai pata jo
tumhaari daastaan thhi
honthon pe to na thhi

ja jhoothe
honthon pe to na thhi
magar dil mein ha thhi

koi dil na dega
anaadi anjaan ko
hum ne de diya hai
to maano ehsaan ko
hum bhoole ik baar
ke aankhen chaar
tumhi se kar baithe
na na karte
na na karte
pyaar tumhi se kar baithe
karna thha inkaar
magar ikraar
tumhi se kar baithe
na na karte
pyaar tumhi se kar baithe

chhodo rehne bhi do
ye jhoothhe afsaane
aisa kya hai tum mein
ja jhoothi
aisa kya hai tum mein
ke hum ho deewaane
phir bhi tum ne khwaabon mein
aana nahin chhoda
teer nazron ke
chalaana nahin chhoda
ye shiqwaa sarkaar
hazaaron baar
tumhi se kar baithe
ae ae
na na karte
haan
na na karte
pyaar tumhi se kar baithe

karna tha inkaar
magar ikraar
tumhi se kar baithe
na na karte
pyaar tumhi se kar baithe
na na karte
pyaar tumhi se kar baithe

this used to be the 1st song we sing for the letter “Na” in all antakshris. then there came a tym when we were asked to consciously avoid regular songs. that means this song would make an appearance afrter 20/25 songs. but still we couldn’t avoid it

When we were kids, this was always the first song with letter “na”. It had another benefit that mukhda ended with “Thh”. so the opposite party would be in great difficulty to sing a song with ‘thh” . Till someone would remember “Thhare rahiyo” or thande thande paani se. One more favourite was “ham tum ek kamre kein band hon”. Saamne waali party ko induce karna ‘ha’ is iss gaane ko gaane ke liye. aur phir yeh kehna ki “wrong gaaya” , this song starts with ‘andar se koyi bahar na aa sake”. Nowadays kids dont play games like antakshari, even if they did they would do it online/ f/b etc.

Atulji,
While reading your list of songs for pre teens, I remembered one more song which will be on the top of this list. Ab thoda intezaar to karna hi padega ye gaane ka naam jaan ne ke liye.
