Chaand sifaarish jo karta hamaari

Posted on: September 16, 2012

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Most of the popular Hindi film songs of golden era are remembered even today not only because of melodies and rhythms embedded in them but also because the lyrics of those songs are poetic and meaningful. The quality of lyrics in Hindi film songs started deteriorating sometime from the beginning of 90s and by 2000 onwards, the deterioration in lyrics was almost complete. However, there were a few poet-lyricists who continued to write meaningful lyrics for the Hindi film songs even in 21st century though they had to occasionally cross the ‘self imposed laxman rekha’ in keeping with the current waves of the Hindi film music. Among such poet-lyricists, names of Gulzar, Javed Akhtar, Hasan Kamal and Prasoon Joshi come to my mind.

September 16th is the birthday of Prasoon Joshi. He was born in Almora where he spent his early years in the laps of the Himalayas. At the age of 17, he wrote his first collection of poems ‘Main Aur Wo’, a conversation with himself. After completing his M.Sc in Physics and MBA he decided to pursue a career in advertising. He started his career with one of the leading multi-national advertising agency at Delhi and after about 5-6 years, he was transferred to Mumbai as an Executive Creative Director. In 2002, he left this advertising company to join another multi-national advertising company based in Mumbai. Presently, he is the Chairman of the World Group of that company.

Simultaneously, the poet in his heart made him to pursue the career in Hindi film industry as a lyricist while continuing his job in the advertising company. He started his career in Hindi film industry as a lyricist in ‘Bhopal Express’ (1999). Thereafter he wrote lyrics for films like ‘Lajja’ (2000), ‘Aankhen’(2002), ‘Hum Tun’ (2004), ‘Rang De Basanti’ (2006), ‘Fanna’ (2006), ‘TaareZameen Par’ (2007), ‘Ghajini’ (2008), ‘Delhi 6’ (2009), ‘Break Ke Baad’ (2010),‘Teri Meri Kahani’ (2012). For ‘Delhi 6’ he also ventured in to write screenplay and dialogues in addition to lyrics. [All these information are from sources like newspapers articles ,Wikipedia and IMD].

On the occasion of Prasoon Joshi’s birthday, I have chosen a song ‘chaand sifaarish jo kartaa hamaari’ from the film FANNA (2006). The song is picturised on Aamir Khan and Kajol. Kailash Kher sings for Vrajesh Hirji whom I have seen in some TV serials. This is one of the very few songs of the Hindi films of 21st century which I like a lot. The lyrics though remind me of the golden era ofHindi film songs, yet there is novelty in this poetry. I have come across many ‘chhand’ songs but I do not remember any Hindi film songs in which the poetic imagination of getting ‘sifaarish’ from ‘chaand’ has been used. The song was set to music by Jatin-Lalit which has a shade of sufiana music. The song is sung by Shaan and Kailash Kher.

Incidentally, this is the song which I have heard the most while travelling in Uttarakhand in ‘share taxis’. The locals travelling with me will proudly tell me that this song was written by Prasoon Joshi who belonged to Uttarakhand. The last time I heard this comment from the locals was in 2010.

Enjoy this 21st century song in the 20th century mould.

Whenever I listen to this song, I feel a strong undercurrent of sadness. May be because of tragic climax of the movie or the superb performances by the lead acting pair.

The other actresses featuring in tis song are Shruti seth(Kajol`s friend who doesn`t like Aamir khan)and Lilette Dubey(with glares on her head),Gautami Kapoor & Sanaya Irani(T.v.serial actresses).

I specially like this movie for Kajol and Aamir Khan`s sensitive performances. Whenever they came together on screen in this movie, their performances are worth watching.Their onscreen chemistry is just superb.

Atulji

I strongly recommend you to watch the scenes of this movie, where Kajol,Aamir khan and Rishi kapoor perform.

I think this is the last movie for which Jatin pandit and lalit pandit composed music together. After this movie they started to give music with seperate names.

I like Shaan(Shantanu Mukherjee)`s voice very much. It seems like he is very down to earth person in real life also without starry airs.

He started his singing career with R.D.Burman`s Parinda song. He has got another singing sister Sagarika. His father Late Manas Mukerjee also gave music for hindi movies like Laakhon ki baat(Basu chatterjee-Sanjeev Kumar,Farooque sheikh,Anita Raj,Utpal dutt),Shaayad(got very good music-starring Naseeruddin shah,Neeta Mehta,Vijayendra Ghatge)

Fanaa had excellent music and the lyrics were so sensitive. My favorite is Dekho naa.. it has lines like “sawan ye seedha nahi khufia bada” and “Ye saazish hai boondon ki”. Beautiful poetry!

OH,well, I know this song…my nephew got married in 2006, which I didn’t attend, so they send me DVD of the wedding, although I had very hard time to play in my DVD player…so, I bought a new DVD player that can play VCD :).
well, this song played in back ground during his reception…it made me curious enough to watch the movie too 🙂
