Jaane kaisa chhaane lagaa nasha ye pyaar ka

Posted on: October 2, 2012

“Zabak” (1961), a quintessential B grade movie was a Basant Pictures production. It was produced and directed by Homi Wadia. The movie had Mahipal, Shyama, Manhar Desai, W. M. Khan, B. M. Vyas, Babu Raje, Achla Sachdev, Uma Dutt, Krishna Kumari, Sahira, Adeeb etc in it.

Like most B grade movies of that era, this movie too was studded with outstanding A grade music. One of its song, viz. Teri duniya se door chale hoke majboor has gone on to become a timeless classic.

As many as four songs from “Zabak” (1961) have been discussed in the past. Here is the fifth one. This song is sung by Lata. It is picturised on a lady whom I am unable to identify. She lip syncs this song for the benefit of Mahipal. What catches the eye is the brighly coloured sets and dresses in the picturisation.

Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

PS-Can someone tell me what does “Zabak” mean ?

Song-Jaane kaisa chhane lagaa nasha ye pyaar ka (Zabak)(1961) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Prem Dhawan, MD-Chitragupta

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

jaane kaisa chhaane lagaa nasha ye pyaar ka
thoda thoda aane lagaa maza bahaar ka
jaane kaisa chhaane lagaa nasha ye pyaar ka
thoda thoda aane lagaa maza bahaar ka

dil jo mile, gunche khile,
jaan gaye ham raaz naye
dil jo mile, gunche khile,
jaan gaye ham raaz naye
tujh se sanam, teri qasam,
seekh liye andaaz naye
gai dil kokhuq adaa,
mera bas na chala
jaane kaisa chhaane lagaa nasha ye pyaar ka
jaane kaisa chhaane lagaa nasha ye pyaar ka
thoda thoda aane lagaa maza bahaar ka

dil hai naadaan, raat haseen,
kaisa sama hai kaisi ghadi
dil hain naadaan, raat haseen,
kaisa sama hai kaisi ghadi
kaise bujhe dil ki lagi,
ab to ye mushkil aan padi
aisa dard mila,
nahin jis ki dawa,
tere pyaar ke siva
jaane kaisa chhaane lagaa nasha ye pyaar ka
jaane kaisa chhaane lagaa nasha ye pyaar ka
thoda thoda aane lagaa maza bahaar ka

Please don`t take this seriously, this is a piece of pure guess work:
whether she is Sahira(introducing) ??
other female names in credit sequences geeta, sundari, kusum, rehana, hamida ???

Arunji, Help again the same question ?

She is not South Krishna kumari(That one thing is I am very much sure about),
may be she is North or other Krishna kumari ??(or at that time North Krishna kumari is not this much young ??)

Like

Yeah, Thats Sahira, same one as from Shree Ganesh (1962).

Any one who know the meaning of zabak also may know the meaning of Gadar please inform what it means ???

Thank you Atulji for the meaning.

‘ Ghadar ‘ means ‘ armed revolt ‘ or ‘ violent revolution ‘ . As in first war of independence in 1857. That is known as ‘ghadar -1857 ‘ . This was shown in Shyam Benegal’s ‘ Junoon ‘ .

A line is missing in song lyrics :
gai dil kokhuq adaa, ‘

should be :
‘ gayi dil ko udaa
teri shokh adaa ‘

–from Memsaab’s review:

Zabak and his parents (Ma=Achala Sachdev) are a middle-class family in Isfahaan, which hasn’t stopped him and the Princess Zainab (Shyama) from falling in love with each other. Zabak has some egalitarian views which are wholeheartedly endorsed by a visiting merchant, Usman Shah (BM Vyas).

—So, Zabak is the name of hero, Mahipal.

–Someone has also commented on her review that there is no meaning of Zabak provided in the Islamic directory, and I could not find one either. There are people with last name Zabak all over the world, but no one seems to know the meaning of the word. At one place I read that Zabak has either no meaning or that it was considered the name of a famous japanese warlord!

Most names have some meaning behind them. I am sure the movie maker of this movie must have chosen this title for some reason.

The meaning of Zabak come may come from a profession, such as the name “Brewster” which refers to a female brewer. Some of these craft-based family names can be a profession in another language. For this reason it is important to know the nationality of a name, and the languages spoken by it’s ancestors. Many modern names like Zabak originate from religious texts like the Quran, the Bible, the Bhagavadgītā, and so forth. Commonly these names are shortened versions of a religious expression such as “Worthy of praise”.

bluefire ji,

I had also looked all over the net, persian dictionary, Arabic dictionary etc. but the word ‘ zabak ‘ was no where to be found. I even tried different variations like jabak or zabaq etc. I had a hunch, so wanted to confirm it it is right. And it is very likely that same word or similar sounding words are there is various languages with slight variation in meanings.

zabak story has triggered another memory. ‘ Isfahaan ‘ is the Arabic/persain name for ‘Spain’ .

Ok, one last attempt now that this word has haunted me so much 🙂 I think in gujarati, the literal translation means ‘flickering’ or ‘jhagmag’ as they say in hindi. My mom used to light these lamps and put me in charge to watch at times and I would shout to her (roughly in hindi) – diya zoron se zabak zabak ho raha hai–since its flickering brightly, its running out of oil and it needs more oil to continue. Since lots of these words are derived from Urdu, and here it is used to describe the male lead, my guess is, it is used in the context of ‘someone that shines/lights brightly’. I had completely forgotten this word.

That is “jhapakna” as in “aankh jhapakna” (fluttering of eye)
lamp flickering brightly is “jhilmilaana”
Stars flickering is “jagmagaana”

Atul ji,
According to a “Popular Dictionary of Hindustani to English and English to Hindustani” written by Rev.T.Craven,M.A. and published in 1889,by the methodist publishing House,Lucknow, the meaning of
ZABH is Sacrifice and ZABAK means one who is ready to do sacrifice.

That sound quite plausible. Thanks for this information.

Actually i dont know what it means in hindi or how its being used for this movie. Cant tell from story of the movie. But for what i described for gujarati, its zabak. Zapak as u said is for hindi. I even called my mother to confirm and she was happy that i got something right 🙂 It may indeed have a different meaning in hindi.

Deshmukh Sir,

With due respect to your findings, i wish to suggest that, the word zabak is more likely to mean ‘sacrificial cut ‘ or the ‘final decisive stroke’ rather than the ‘sacrificial goat’ . If it is not found in dictionaries it is more likely a slang word.

Regards.
