Today’s song is the last and final song from an unusual film- Jagriti-1977. The film was produced by Vimal Bhatia and Naren Malhotra for Jay Films, Bombay. It was directed by Rajendra Bhatia and the music was by Laxmikant-Pyarelal duo. The Lyricist was Sahir Ludhianvi.
I have called this film ‘Unusual’, because it was a reshaped version of the old film Jagriti made in 1954. Those of you who are senior enough, would surely remember the old film Jagriti-1954. I remember it distinctly.
When I was in school, every year our school used to arrange for a film show for the students, free of charge. The film selected would be the most suitable for the students. Next to our school, there was a cinema theatre “Nishant”, which was not operating. The school would take it on rent for one day and we were taken there in a line to sit and enjoy the free film. ‘Jagriti’-1954 was shown to us in this theatre. The songs of this film were famous, like ” aao bachchon, tumhe dikhaye jhanki Hindustan ki” and ” Hum laaye hain toofan se kishti nikal ke” etc.
Jagriti -1977 was entirely based on the basic storyline of the old film, but changes were made as needed for the changed times. The film was not liked by the audience and it was a total flop as the story was neither old nor new.
The cast of the film included Nutan, Vinod Mehra, Reena Roy, Krishnakant, Paintal, Asrani, Madhu Apte, Junior Mehmood etc, with a long list of names. The main role was done by Master Satyajeet. The revised story of the film Jagriti-1977 was…..
The plot of Jagriti (1977) heavily draws inspiration from the themes of the classic, award-winning 1954 film of the same name, blending the core story of a rebellious youth’s transformation with typical 1970s Bollywood action and drama elements.
The story revolves around Ajaykumar (Ajay), a wealthy, spoiled, and highly rebellious young boy. Due to his constant troublemaking and bad behaviour in the community, his uncle, Ramapati Mukherjee, becomes deeply displeased. Blaming Ajay’s mother for spoiling him, his uncle decides to punish him by packing him off to a strict boarding school/hostel in the city.
Ajay does not change his ways upon arrival. Instead, he brings chaos to the institution. He gets into physical fights with other students, complains about the food, mocks the teaching methods, and gets heavily reprimanded. Feeling humiliated, Ajay leads a small band of pranksters to make life miserable for the school administration, eventually forcing the portly superintendent to quit.
A calm, patient, and highly understanding new superintendent named Shekhar takes over. While Ajay and his friends initially plan to play tricks on Shekhar to drive him away as well, Shekhar reacts with kindness. When the students fail their examinations, Shekhar introduces a lenient, compassionate method of teaching that slowly wins over almost all the boys—except for Ajay. Ajay intentionally does the exact opposite of whatever Shekhar requests.
Around this time, Ajay forms an unlikely bond with Shakti, a poor, disabled boy with a missing leg. Shakti is deeply reformed and tries his best to steer Ajay onto the right path. However, during a football match, Ajay’s aggression gets the better of him, and he kicks another boy in the stomach. Furious at his lack of remorse, Shekhar suspends Ajay and asks the hostel to boycott him.
Deeply hurt, Ajay decides to run away from the hostel. Desperate to stop him, Shakti chases after Ajay onto the busy roads. Tragically, Shakti is hit by a car and succumbs to his injuries at the hospital. Devastated by the loss, Ajay realizes that his stubbornness and reckless ego were the indirect cause of his best friend’s death. Grief-stricken, he transforms his life completely. Months later, Ajay fulfills his promise to Shakti and Shekhar by standing first in his class.
The film concludes on an emotional note as a remorseful Shekhar, regretting his harsh boycott of Ajay, decides to move on from the hostel, singing a song of departure.
Film Jagriti-1954 was made after just 7 years of getting Independence, so the story stressed igniting Patriotism, respect for elders, family values etc. Therefore the film was liked by the audience very much. To make a film on such a story, that too with patch work, did not create any curiosity or appeal to the modern audience.
The direction was patchy and the story written by Sharad Pilgaonkar – father of actor Sachin Pilgaonkar- was not appealing. The songs were also not upto the mark. Actually, Laxmikant-Pyarelal had given excellent songs to their other films in 1977, but the same spark was absent in this film.
Now let us take a look at the Film music scene of 1977 for a clearer picture….
The year 1977 can be called an yeat of qawwalis. There were many, but at least 4 qawwalis became Hits, famous and popular. There were 2 from the film Amar,Akbar and Anthony- ‘Parda hai Parda’ and ‘Tareef teri nikli hai’. Film Hum kisi se kam nahin had its share with ‘Hai agar Dushman, dushman, Zamana gham nahin’, and Laila Majnu gave ‘ Ho ke maayus tere dar se’. Qawalis always were the film attraction. major qawwali singers were Shakila bano Bhopali, Shankar-Shambhoo, Yusuf Azad, Aziz nazan and jani Babu.
This year was also of Laxmikant Pyarelal and RD Burman. Laxmikant Pyarelal’s Amar, Akbar,Anthony, Dharam Veer and Chacha Bhatija gave musical bonanza. R.D.Burman matched with Mukti, Hum kisi se kam nahin, Anurodh and Kinara. Kalyan ji-Anand ji’s Hatyara, Rajesh Roshan’s Doosra Admi, Ravi’s Admi Sadak ka etc also chipped in with good songs. Ravi’s ” Aaj mere yaar ki shadi hai” was played by Marriage Bands for many years after that ! 18 months after his death Madan Mohan’s Laila Majnu enthalled the audience making it one of the best films of Madan Mohan.
Anand Bakshi, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Anjaan, Gulzar and Sahir were husy in writing good songs. Kavitha Krishnamurthy made her debut with film Kadambari.
W.M.Khan-famous first film singer of Alam Ara died in Pakistan. Parul Ghosh also died. National award was given to Rafi. FilmFare awards went to Laxmikant Pyarelal, Gulzar, Rafi and Priti Sagar (Mero gaam katha paare- Manthan).
One of the least known actors in this film was Madhu Apte. Madhu Apte’s full name was Madhukar Shankar Apte. He was born at Poona on 1-3-1919. He was a Marathi stage and film actor predominantly, who successfully used his handicap of stammering to advantage, in delivering dialogues and creating humour by mistiming the dialogues.
He acted in many Hindi films for about 40 years. His first film was Ramshastri-1944. He used his stammering as a means to create comedy. He worked in 33 Hindi films. For this he had to travel from Poona to Bombay frequently. This affected his health and he said goodbye to acting somewhere in 1985. His last Hindi film was Aasha-1980. Madhu Apte died on 25-2-1993 at Pune.

He entered in the film industry , during the mid forties as an actor and remained active for almost fifty years, till he passed away. Kolhapur born Mr Madhu Shankar Apte appeared in more than two hundred films ,mostly of Marathi language and less Hindi films . In Hindi films, he was offered comic roles, but in Marathi films besides doing comedy ,he was offered serious ,non comic roles . True, to work in about two hundred films in five decades is not a big achievement , but here it is mentionable that beside cinema ,Mr. Apte was also theater enthusiastic , which took most of his time. Public enjoyed his performances in Hindi cinema ,but sadly for most of the viewers ,he remained an unknown actor . Last year , in one of the posts at facebook , a writer wrote about him , so for good ,but he made an unpardonable mistake. He recognized him as a Marathi lady. Knowledge gained from Wikipedia or some likewise sites helps ,when one does his own research . Seventy four years old Mr Madhu Apte left this planet for his final abode up above, on 13 March 1993.
What Mr Johnny Walker was to Mr Gurudutt , Mr Madhu Apte was for Mr Mohan Kumar . Not only Mr Mohan Kumar , even his co-brother J Om Prakash and film maker Naresh Kumar (brother Of Jubilee star Rajinder Kumar) were also a fan of Mr Madhu Apte . Mr Apte , had speech disorder ,he used to stammer, could not speak fluently and had to stop in between a sentence . Mr Madhu Apte instead of brooding over his shortcomings , utilized his handicap to his advantage . Film makers found his accent and way of speaking funny and gave him roles in their movies. There is a general impression that Mr J Om Prakash & Mr Mohan Kumar believed that Mr Apte is their lucky mascot and gave him roles in their movies . Since , in film line there are so many persons who believe in one or other superstition ,therefore I would not contradict their views , but I also trust that ,Mr Madhu Apte ,who was a likable simple person ,was also a brilliant actor, in addition to be lucky for some filmmakers.
Mr Madhu Apte ,who obviously was a Maharashtrian ,made his entry in the Marathi film industry and after doing many Marathi movies ,he got a chance to regale Hindi film viewers with his brand of simple and undiluted comedy. Since he did not appear in many Hindi movies, probably due to his commitments to Marathi movies, he largely remained unsung and un-recognized . To recall the association of film makers J Om Prakash and Mr Mohan Kumar with the gifted artist Shri Madhu Apte, please watch him in the films made by them , during the sixties.
