Bhiksha de de maiyya pingalaa

Posted on: October 18, 2012

I have read about this song “Bhiksha de de maiyya pingala”, but I was not aware of the details of this song and I had never heard this song before.

I heard this song for the first time only just now.

This song is from “Bharthari” (1944). This movie was a Navin Pictures Production. It was directed by Naveen Doshi. The movie had Surendranath, Mumtaz Shanti, Arun, Kajjan, Sulochana Chatterji etc in lead roles.

This song is a duet. It is sung by Surendranath and Amirbai Karnataki. Pt Indra is the lyricist. Music is composed by Khemchand Prakash.

Only the audio of this song is available, but I guess that this song is picturised on Surendranath and Mumtaz Shanti.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Mr Sadanand Kamath.

Raja Bharthari is story of the folklore.I think we have in Gujarati, also I heard in Bhojapuri and in Rajstani too. May be this story is in each language too!
Only thing I remember…that this Brahmin got the boon to be immortal by eating this fruit. But he gives this fruit to King than king to queen Pingala,
Pingala gives to Mahapati (chief of Army). after mahapati gave it to maid servant and this maid servant loves Raja Bharathari…so this fruit completed the circle. Now Raja knows about infidelity of his queen thus he renounced all material desires and asked his wife to give him “bhiksha” alms.

Some where in 1950’s I saw this drama. So I remember this story.

Atulji,
Thanks for bringing this song back in public domain. A little correction in line 12 of the lyrics:
It is not “gaaoon prahar kataar” but ” khaaoon zahar kataar”
