Albela mastana ik hanson ka jodaa

Posted on: November 25, 2012

Today (25 november) is the 31st death anniversary of R C Boral (19 October 1903–25 November 1981). One of the earliest pioneers in the field of Hindi movie music, it was he who introduced the concept of playback singing in Indian movies by first employing it it “Dhoop Chhaaon” (1935). He has been described as the father of Indian Cinema Music by Anil Biswas.

R C Boral composed music in about 35 Hindi movies (and in nearly the same number of Bangla movies as well). This blog has 52 songs composed by R C Boral.

“Waapas” (1943 was produced under the banner of New Theatres. It was directed by Hemchandra Chundar. The movie had Asit Baran, Bharati Devi, Nawab, Maya Bose etc in it. Three songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.

Here is a song from “Waapas” (1943). Details about this song are difficult to come by. What is known is that the song is picturised on Bharati Devi. One comment of YT states that the song in the picturised version was sung by Shaila Devi whereas the record version of the song were sung by Binota Bose/Roy. The movie had three lyricists, viz Pt Bhushan, Munshi Zakir Hussain and Akhtar Chugtai. Which of them wrote this song is also not clear. The only thing that can be said with certainty about this song is that the song was composed by R C Boral.

Here is this nice song from “Waapas” (1943).

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this song as far as its singer and lyricist are concerned. In the meanwhile I will consider Shaila Devi as the singer of this song.
PS-Now, we have come to know, thanks to information provided by our own inhouse encyclopaedia, Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, that the song is sung by Suprabha Sarkar and lyricist is Pt Bhushan.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Mr Sadanand Kamath.

Atul ji,
As per details by Shri.Pankaj Raag in his book,’Dhunon ki Yatra’,this song is sung by SUPROVA SARKAR.
The Lyricist,as per HFGK, is Pt.Bhushan, for this song.
The songs of WAAPAS-1943 were so melodious, that R.C.Boral got The West Bengal Journalists’ Award for this film’s Music.
Similarly he had recd.this same award for his film HAMRAHI-1945 also.
Humrahi was a remake of a Bengali film ‘Udayer pathe’.Humrahi had a title song of ‘JAN GAN MAN…’ which later became our national Anthem.
However the credit of using ‘Jan gan man…’ as a film song First Time, goes to MD-Chandiram in the film ‘Insaan Ya Shaitaan'(aka Fateh Imaan)-1933.This was a chorus song.
For further details and synopsis of this film, see song posted on 4-4-2012.

Arunkumar Ji,
Earlier, you mentioned one Suprabha Ghosh

Naina panghat bhaye hamaare

In some places, I read after marriage, the name changed to Suprabha Sarkar. I wonder whether it is the same singer. Thanks.
