Kyun jee scent lagaaya hai

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Roshan – a name that spells a purist, a name that is acknowledged as a creator of master melodies. The career of an artist in the film industry is measured by the films one is associated with. In a short career of 19 years, this giant amongst music directors accomplished 56 films. The filmography is as impressive as can be – Baawre Nain (1950), Humlog and Malhaar (1951), Anhonee, Naubahaaar and Malhaar in 1952, Maalkin, Aagosh and Maashooqa in 1953, Chandni Chowk and Jashan in 1955, Agra Road and Coffee House in 1957, Aji Bas Shukriya in 1958, CID Girl and Heera Moti in 1959, and then on to sixties with Barsaat Ki Raat, Baabar, Aarti, Surat Aur Seerat, Wallaah Kya Baat Hai, Dil Hi To Hai, Taj Mahal, Chitralekha, Bheegi Raat, Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal, Devar, Mamta, Bahu Begum and Anokhi Raat. In this sampler list, each film represents a treasure of melodies that would be the envy of other music directors. With this post, we are celebrating the 200th song of this illustrious melody maker to be represented on this blog.

In the mid fifties, Lata Mangeshkar made an attempt at being a producer. The film that was launched was titled ‘Bhairavi’. Given the stature of Lata in the industry, every person was eagerly awaiting the announcement of the music director’s name. And the name announced was that of Roshan. (The film was not completed).

Roshan Lal Nagrath was born on July 14th, 1917 in a village named Bhariya in undivided Punjab (now in Pakistan). He came into a family of civil contractors that had no interest in or tradition of any kind of music. Yet Roshan was extremely music inclined and he learnt to play the harmonium at a very small age. Recognizing his talent, his father encouraged him, and
allowed him opportunities for learning music under the tutelage of senior masters and teachers, including the great Ustaad Allauddin Khan and Ustaad Bundu Khan. After his training, he came in contact with the then director of AIR, ZA Bukhari. Bukhari Sb was impressed by Roshan’s talent and he hired him as a staff artist at a princely salary of Rs. 70 per month. He
worked at tha AIR for twelve years. It was at AIR that he met Ira, his wife-to-be. She had come for an audition, and then stayed on for learning music.

While at the AIR, he got a chance to meet with Anil Biswas, who was then one of the top music directors in the industry. On his advice, Roshan decided to move to Bombay, and in due course he became an assistant for Khursheed Anwar. Then followed a chance meeting with the producer director Kidar Sharma, at the railway platform of Dadar station in Bombay. This chance meeting proved to be the significant turning point in his career. Kidar Sharma signed him up as the music director for his upcoming film ‘Neki Aur Badi’. An interesting film in the sense that it was the debut (as well as the last) film of Kidar Sharma as an actor. The film failed at the box office, and so did its music duly disappear. What with a long string of very famous hits during that year, the songs of this film failed to make any significant impact in the memory of the listening public. Still, a couple of the songs were noticed, especially “Dil Lubhaane Lagi Sapnon Ki Duniya”, in the voice of Rajkumari, and an unusual composition that carried the earthy flavors of Punjab folk music. The song is a duet in the voices of Amirbai and Feroze Dastoor, and I dare say, it will steal your liking on the first hear itself. This song, from the first Hindi film of Roshan, is presented here to celebrate the double century milestone for this composer.

The film ‘Neki Aur Badi’ was produced and directed by Kidar Sharma, under the banner of Oriental Pictures, Bombay. Kidar Sharma is the lyricist, and also the hero in this film. The other actors listed in the credits include Madhubala, Geeta Bali, Pesi Patel, Uma Dutt, Rajinder Singh, Krishna, Naziraa etc. The singing voices are identified as those of Amirbai and
Feroze Dastoor. There are a few lines at the end of the song, which seem to be in a different male voice. It is possible that there is a third, uncredited singer in this song. I would request other knowledgeable readers to add more information about this. This song is rare, in that this was not uploaded on the net so far, and I have posted it online today.

Have a listen and fall in love with this unusual sounding song that uses the popular ‘tappe’ music formation from the Punjabi folk tunes. Enjoy.

yoon ji scent lagaaya hai
tum ko bulaa laaye, is ko samjhaaya hai

Oh say
Aan-haan, you seem to be wearing
A pleasant fragrance
Ah yes, and I have told (this fragrance)
To go and bring you over (here)

baaja jo bajaati hoon
duniya ko aur, tumhen kuch aur sunaati hoon

I play this instrument (with a happy pleasure)
But the music I play for you, specially
Is different from
What I play for the rest of the world

photo ka bahaana hai
saamne laa ke tumhen, tasveer banana hai

Taking a photo
Is just an excuse
For brining you here
To make you sit (unmoving)
In front of me
And just watch you

maine nathni daali hai
tumko nathne ki tarqeeb nikaali hai

See, this nose ring that I wear
That is a device
To keep you under check

tavaareekh bataati hai
badi ka moonh kaala, neki phal paati hai

The history is a witness
That the bad vanquished
And the good always prospers

It might have been the last film so far as acting by Kidar sharma is concerned but not the first or the only one. He started acting on screen from Dhoop-Chaon in 1935 and carried it in more than a dozen films. Neki aur Badi was different in the sense that he played leading role in it. He was 39 years of age at the time of Neki aur Badi. It was a mis-match as both Madhubala and Geetabali were too young to be paired with a 39 year old. His was not really an age to become hero of a film. I presume he at least owned partly the producing company i.e., Oriental Pictures and being short of funds as ever, he offered himself as a hero this time, may be primarily to save a handsome amount which a hero might have charged. It was a great flop as rightly observed.
