Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Pyaar ne kitne sapne dekhe

Posted on: December 27, 2012

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Searching for and finding rarities in the world of music, is a keen and interesting pursuit. The Hindi film songs have so many variants attached to their existence. Songs that appear in film, but are not released elsewhere. Songs that are on records but not included in the film. Version songs – the official song in the film and on the record, is also available on record in the voice of a different singer. This case is different from the same song sung by more than one singer and included in the film. Then we have the variations between the song published on record and the song as picturized in the film.

Another one is when the song is played more than once in the film, but all parts of it were never published on record. An interesting variation is when the song available in different published formats are different, i.e. the song is published let’s say on 78 rpm, and then later republished on an EP or LP or a cassette. There are cases where we find multiple different versions of the song available in different formats. And there are also known rare cases, where the entire song is just not available anywhere as a single entity – every format in which the song is available, is slightly different from each other, and is incomplete.

And then there are songs that were created, and even filmed, but then never released because the picture was shelved. In few such cases, thankfully either the records did get published, or the clips of the incomplete film somehow made it into the hands of music lovers. And further, even more rare are the songs which were recorded, but the records were never made. These songs keep sitting unnamed, unknown on spool tapes, somewhere, in the possession of the recording studio, or the family of the music director, or someone else. And chance has it that some such songs also appear as an audio only sometimes. And yet one more variation is the non-film songs making it in and out of films. Some non film songs get played in films, uncredited. And sometimes there have been cases where a song prepared for a film, and also included in the film, for some reason or compulsion got released as a NFS.

I am sure friends on this blog may add to this list of how such oddities and rarities get made. A very interesting diversion as of itself. Recently, I have been introduced to an avid collector in Chandigarh, who has made this his primary method of collection. He goes after various versions of the song – published audio versions on records (78, EP, SP, LP), soundtrack, version song etc., and makes an effort to identify and collect as many variations of a song that he can. Indeed a daunting task. And then I know about one other collector, who collects all the published editions of records, i.e. first release and then subsequent releases of the same song. Sometimes, there are cases that the various releases get published under different labels, and even different music companies. So his effort is to collect all such releases of individual songs.

Well, welcome to the 1200th song of Asha Bhosle on this blog. In case you are wondering why this strange longwinded intro – well the song I present in this post is one such variation. It is a song excluded from a very well known film. It appears on the records, credited with the film name, formally published with the rest of the songs. It also finds its place in the song list printed in the film booklet. (And besides, I was just thinking of putting together all these variant scenarios, and this song just gave me the opportunity. 🙂 ).

The film is ‘Funtoosh’, from 1956. With a total of eight songs credited to this film (including this excluded song), this film is another example of SD Burman and Navketan getting together to create musical magic (or magical music). The songs come from the pen of Sahir Ludhianvi. Four wonderful songs are already posted here on this blog. This here is the fifth, excluded song from this film. After some search, I found this song online, albeit the audio being very poor, as the recording is from a radio broadcast (from Radio Ceylon, where else). The person who has uploaded this has himself requested for a better recording to be uploaded. The recording is mono, and not very clear. So I have gone ahead and uploaded it once again today, from my collection. This recording is from the original 78 rpm record, and hence is of better quality.

One more special thing about this song is that it is a very special song. It is a gem of a creation, written lovingly, and composed as a slow song of sadness, sung oh so well by Asha ji. I wonder why this wonderful song was kept out of the film. Did it not fit into the storyline? Maybe.

Ah, but what a lovely sound of melancholy this one is. Just listen, and wonder.

pyaar ne kitne sapne dekhe, aas ne kitne geet buney
is duniya ke shor mein lekin dil ki dhadkan kaun suney

Ah the dreams conjured up
By this heart in love
And the songs weaved
By the lines of hope
But in the clamoring din of this world
No one listens to the rhythms of the heart

dil hi mein reh gaye sab armaan
chup hai zubaan, gham ka bayaan
kis se karen, kaun suney

All desires and aspirations
Remain in the heart, unfulfilled
Voice is silent
Whom to tell my tale of woes
Who would listen

ashaa’on ke sooney ghar mein har aahat begaani thi
jab hum ne nazdeek se dekha har soorat anjaani thi

Every sound, every movement
In the deserted palace of hopes
Was unfamiliar, an alien
And every face
From up close
Appeared a stranger

kaun suney kis ko samjhaayen dukh apni tanhaai ke
kis ko padi jo sun’ne baitthe dukhde peer paraayi ke

Whom to tell, who would listen
To the sorrows of my desolate life
Who would bother to sit alongside
And listen the laments of another

Could Lata do justice to such a song. A BIG NO. This is were Asha scores over Lata. Awaaz mein sauz hain aur saaz hain. We can understand the reason why OP could not use her voice.
