This film has lots and lots of songs, as I am discovering for last few days. First the genuine qawwali which is a matter of interest to S. D. Burman’s fans. I have been wondering for some months if S. D. Burman ever composed a qawwali. Than a qawwali from ‘Dr. Vidya’ was posted a few days back. Than ‘bluefire ji’ drew my attention to this qawwali from the film “Benazir’. This is written by Shakeel Badayuni and singers are Mubarak Begum and Asha Bhosle. Since then I have seen many songs of this film which have a lot of playback singers. The list of female singers includes Lata, Usha, Suman Kalyanpure apart from Mubarak Begum and Asha. Among male singers I have been able to find only Rafi’s songs. I do not know if there is any other song featuring male singers. We shall see at least a couple of wonderful Lata solos on Meena Kumari, in the coming days. The songs are a treat to ears.
But first let us take a look at this qawwali. This is an all female song picturized on two three actor I do not recognize and Tanuja (whom I recognize). This movie was produced by Bimal Roy, which make it an ‘A’ grade film and cast is Ashok Kumar, Meena Kumari, Shashi Kapoor, Tanuja, Nirupa Roy etc. Here is a brief synopsis about the film given by Shri. Arunkumar Deshmukh Sir :
BENAZIR(1964) was produced by Bimal Roy(NOT directed by), and was Directed by an ordinary director S.Khalil, who had earlier directed some nondescript films like Jhankar, Nai Zindagi, Bhaijaan, Sartaj, Gunehgar, Deewar-55 and Shahkar etc.
Benazir (Meena Kumari) is a dancer of Lucknow, who is loved by Nawab Afsar Hussain(Ashok Kumar), though he has a good looking and khandani Biwi, Begum Sarwari(Nirupa Roy), at home.
Benazir secretly loves younger brother of Nawabsaab,Anwar nawab(Shashi Kapoor) who is-unknown to Benazir-already engaged to Shahida(Tanuja), younger sister of Begum Sarwari.
Anwar hates Benazir holding her responsible for Nawabsaab’s disturbed household.once he goes to Benazir and is firing her when, instigated by illwishers, the Nawabsaab comes there, finds them together and gets a heart attack. The engagement of Anwar to Shahida is broken etc. The film ends on a tragic note. Run of the mill story, weak direction and non interference of Bimal Roy in the film’s development saw to it that the film fails at the Box office.
Typically, this qawwali is talking about seemingly trivial matters on the surface and one has to look below the surface and beyond the obvious to find the true meaning. This may be situational in the film’s story, but the lyrics are having deeper spiritual meanings. True to qawwali tradition, that is the reason why I call this a genuine qawwali.

Spiritual meaning : We can see Him without actually having to feast our eyes on His persona, as he is omnipresent every where. He is not visible though there is no barrier among us(per se his benevolence and our devotion).
