Akele mein wo ghabraate to honge

Posted on: January 8, 2013

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog

The first time we hear of Khayyaam as a music director is in the 1951 film, ‘Pyaar Ki Baaten’. In this film, he shares the honors of music composition with Bulo C Rani. But certainly, this is not his first film as a music director. He has been active in the industry since 1948, albeit has was using a different name. In 1947-48 when he came to Bombay looking for opportunities as a music director, some producers and friends suggested to him not to use his original name, and so he adopted a pseduonym – Sharma ji. Under this name he composed music for three films, before reverting to his original name with the film, ‘Pyaar Ki Baaten’.

This song is from the 1950 film ‘Biwi’. Prior to this, his debut film was ‘Heer Ranjha’ (1948) in which he partnered with Rehman Verma (who later migrated to Pakistan) under the duo name of Sharma ji Verma ji. Then in 1949, he composed the music for the film ‘Parda’, using the pseudonym, Sharma ji. ‘Biwi’ in 1950 is the third film for which he composed the music.

In this film, Khayyaam (as Sharma ji) shares the responsibility of music composition with Aziz Hindi. The film has a total of 13 songs, of which 4 songs are by Khayyaam (as Sharma ji). The film was produced under the banner of Paristan Pictures, Bombay, and directed by Kishore Sharma. The 13 songs in this film are written by three poets – Wali Saheb, Aziz Hindi, and Naazim Panipati. This particular song is from the pen of Wali Saheb. The cast of actors of this film includes Mumtaz Shanti, Veena, Madhuri, Naasser, Pran, Ram Lal, Murad, Gulnaar, Anjaam, Shabnam and Sheila Verman.

In his career as a music director, this song holds a special place, in that it was his first super hit song that became immensely popular with the listening public. This is a sad song of separation and loneliness, rendered by Rafi Sb performing at his best. A song of sadness mixed with a resigned dejection, that still calls out an expectation – that she might still be thinking of him.

Just listen to this song, and you will know, why this became a super hit.
Enjoy.

akele mein wo ghabraate to hongey
mitaa ke mujh ko pachhtaate to hongey

Maybe
She would feel lonely, restless
When she by herself
Maybe, a feeling of regret
Having laid waste me and my love
Maybe

hamaari yaad aa jaati to hogi
achaanak wo tadap jaate to hongey

Maybe, she would think of me, sometime
And maybe
A pain would pass through her too
Maybe

wo din un ko bhi yaad aate to hongey

Maybe,
She remembers those days
Maybe

patangey apne dono parr jalaa kar
hamaari yaad dilwaate to hongey

The lovelorn moths
Burning their wings
In the flame of the candle
Would be trying to remind her of me
Maybe

This song is a quintessence of Khayyam as MD and Rafi as singer. This song has to figure in any discussion on Khayyam and Rafi., .
I am surprised that this song was not discussed in this blog.
Thanks Sudhir for discussing this song.and bringing it to the notice of the readers.

I definitely seem to remember listening to this song when I was young. Thank you Sudhir Ji for a very informative write up on Khayyam saab.

This is a ‘unpicturized’ song from this film. So people have only heard and no one has seen it.

Friends,

Thanks for all the messages of appreciation. 🙂

Nahm ji,

Thanks for this important input. I would like to forward this information to Harmandir ji for inclusion in the Geet Kosh, as an update. Please point me to the reference for this input.

I have a privately compiled list of all Rafi songs in the excel format which i have downloaded. In the list there is a column for ‘ picturized on’, which says ‘unpicturized’ against this song.

If geetkosh has unpicturised songs too, than this song must have been included.

Thanks and regards.

Generally, in the Geet Kosh, an unpicturized song has a remark annotation attached to it. This song is listed in the Geet Kosh, but does not have any such annotation. That is why I am looking for a confirmation before I send this info to Harmandir ji.

The excel file you refer to, did you download it from someone else, or did you compile it yourself? If you downloaded from someone else, please send me the link.

Thanks and regards

Arun ji, Atul ji,

One gentleman by the name Muveen Bhai has compiled a list of more that 5300 songs by Rafi Sb spanning his entire career from 1944 to the 1980s. Nahm ji found this list posted on the internet, and has downloaded it.

The list itself does not make any claims. On cursory review, this seems to be a fairly exhaustive list of the film song rendered by Rafi Sb, and includes information on some songs from unreleased films also.

Apologies, one correction. The list contains both film and non-film songs rendered by Rafi Sb.

Sudhir ji,
Apart from the songs, important column is ” pictured on”,from my point of view-if it is giving the actor’s name instead of the film role name.

Hope every body has gotten this list by now via Sudhir Sir.

I have referred to the list in my writeups also and since it was available online, i thought anybody can access it. The list includes all recorded songs by Rafi Sahab including regional languages.

It is most useful and pretty extensive in all details of older songs. But it is not free of mistakes. I have been referring to it since last few months so i know, it has some mistakes in the ‘picturized on’ column too.

Any combination song is easy to find. The list has 18 Marathi songs (2 film and 16 non-film songs). And two English songs. I have heard at least one english song(the she i love).

Like

Nahm ji,

That one is such a delightful song –

“”The she I love is a beautiful beautiful dream come true. . .
I love her love her love her, and so will you. . .””

Atul ji,

Would you accept to post an english song in Rafi Sb’s NFS category?

There is another list in the excel sheet ? If you have it please share it with us.

The one i have is downloaded from net, via google search. Now it is not available. I know it has some mistakes but it is very comprehensive.

No, I was late to the party so I dont have it either. But i know there is another list existing put together after lots of research. I have seen the partial images of that list. This one has lots of info, but it also misses some very famous songs and has multiple entries listing the same song (with different song name), from what i recall.

Like

In that case , we have to do with what we have with us. I havent seen instances of any famous songs missing .

‘multiple entries of same song’ – that is possible in some version songs. for eg. “tum bin jaaun kahaan’ ‘s sad version has a different start altogether. In the list this song is mentioned thrice, that could be a mistake. In case of famous movies and songs it is easy to identify if it is a mistake. I usually sort through the movies column.

I have seen other compilations on the net, but none of them were on excel and so easy to download.

bluefire ji,
I only hope you are not mixing up the 2 different lists, being discussed.
The one list for which I have given the link ,on this page-” january 16,2013 at 9.51pm ‘” is NOT nahm’s list. This is a list I found after Googling. nahm’s Excel list is also with me and it is a better one,as far as I have noticed( very few mistakes).
I hope there is no confusion now.

People have devoted time and effort to compile such comprehensive lists. We need to appreciate them for what the lists contain rather than dwell on what the lists do not contain. It is for the rest of us to fill in the missing gaps and rectify the errors in the entries if any. As far as I am concerned, both the lists are fantastic lists and it is upto the rest of us to enhance their value by our inputs.

Nahm,

My final comment to close this topic.

(1) An exclusive group of more than dozen people were working on putting together song database for Rafi Saab more than a few years ago. Before they shut down their online operation, I was able to download partial data from them, that is a few pages of their excel in jpeg format. My guess is that at some point while they were still working on it, their version of excel (with errors) made it through, and owner of ur excel source built upon that data. This is just my guess.

(2) If i recall correctly, more than 6 months ago or so, u wrote a post here, mentioning ur excel and using it to derive statistics for songs of Rafi Saab. Since lot of people here on this blog seems to be well-connected, somehow i thought u were part of the driving force behind original excel. You were looking to categorize songs of Rafi Saab per music directors, and i even suggested u to try out Usha Khanna, Chitragupta, S N Tripathi, Sonik-Omi, etc, and u were kind enough to post appropriate numbers using ur excel. Even last month i asked u to check excel for Zindagi Ek Safar Suhana (Rafi) and u were nice to respond back. I guess even though these conversations were taking place in this public forum, nobody was interested in inquiring u about this excel and now that u have shared it with everyone, it has become a sensitive topic 🙂

(3) I had taken a cursory look at “your excel” few months ago and had even written to the owner that he was missing popular songs like – Aa Lag Ja Gale Dilruba (Dus Lakh), Sun Sun O Gulabi Kali (Sawan Bhadon), Chalo Re Doli Uthao Kahaar (Jaani Dushman), etc. But i never heard back from him, so I gave up on checking the rest. I guess people claim that they dont want to propagate wrong information and seek truth, etc, but when they are corrected, they feel criticized. I have no idea if the excel that u have downloaded and what everyone else here has downloaded still contains those errors or not.

(4) Just today a song from Krorepati was posted on this blog and using “your” excel as reference, it was suggested that Rafi Saab had lip synced for Anoop Kumar in the song. Now if u watch this movie on YT, u would know that Anoop Kumar is the villain in the movie and to make sure his wedding with heiress Shashikala gets completed without trouble, he has his goons locked up, Kishore Kumar, his stepfathar, Radhakrishan and Kumkum. And they are singing the song to distract the goons so Kishore could escape. It is Radhakrishan who is singing the song in his own voice as well as Rafi Saab’s.

(5) I only had good intentions in mind. I wasnt trying to criticize anybody here or the owners of anyone who put together whatever excel. I thought with the resources of this group, if people got hold of original excel, it would make everyone’s life easier and this blog would remain relatively error free. In the hindsight, it would have been best if i had just talked to u offline. Discussing music and movies is a hobby for fun, not to upset anyone or hurt anyone’s feelings.

You have been incredibly sweet and kind to me and I want to thank u for engaging in this discussion.

Please keep up your good work.

Best Regards.

Bluefire ji,

I am aware that you have only good intentions. But i would like to share this excel sheet with you.

We all are trying to make this blog error free. I am always trying to correct however minor the mistakes are in lyrics. This morning i noticed a required correction in the lyrics of ‘hai kali kali ke lab par’. I will put in the comment on that page.

Regarding the “Krorpati ‘ , I dont know how such a mistake can happen when the video of the song is there for all to see. It is true that the excel sheet is giving it wrongly as Kishore and Anup. I did say right at the beginning when I sent it to Sudhir Sir, that it has some mistakes in the ‘picturized on’ column.

About the songs which you did not find in the list :
1. Sun…o gulabi kali – is there at sr. no. 3539
2. Aa lag ja gale dilruba – is there at sr. no. 4838
Both the entries have correct info with them

3. Chalo re doli utthaao – i am sorry to say is not there in the list.

I am not among the well connected people involved in this blog. You are definitely better connected and informed person than myself. I am a lay person with an interest in film songs.

I have not made changes in the excel sheet which i downloaded from the net. I have been consciously tried to use it, and than close it without saving the changes.

Chalo koyi gal nahin, aise bade bade blogs mein chhoti chhoti baaten hoti rehti hain. 🙂

Will talk to you soon on some other subject.
