This day, the Paush Shukal Saptami (the seventh day of the waxing moon cycle of the month of Paush), is a very special day. Today we celebrate the anniversary of birth, of one of the most illustrious and influential persona in the history of our nation. A great teacher who was a poet, a philosopher, an ascetic and yes, a fearless warrior. He taught universal love and brotherhood, inspired his followers to treat their fellow beings at a humanistic level, without differentiating based on caste, creed or beliefs. A rarest of the rare human beings who walked this earth, he lived in this physical world just for 42 years, but his accomplishments and his lasting inspiration for the human race defy the endeavors of many a life time of ordinary mortals.

A few months back, I watched the movie ‘In Custody’ ( Urdu title : ‘Muhafiz’, 1994) on the internet. The film was produced under the banner of Merchant-Ivory Productions and directed by Ismail Merchant. Probably it was a bilingual film – in English and Hindi/Urdu. The star cast included Shashi Kapoor, Shabhana Azmi, Om Puri, Neena Gupta, Sushma Seth, Tinnu Anand, Ajay Sahani etc. The film was based on Anita Desai’s English novel by the same name. A pleasant surprise to me was that the film had 4 ghazals composed jointly by two well known ustads – Ustad Zakir Hussain and Ustaad Sultan Khan in the style reminiscence of the compositions of 50s and 60s. After all, it is a period film. Of the four ghazals, three ghazals are of Faiz Ahmed Faiz.

Searching for the early songs of Chitragupt, I found this wonderful duet that I had not heard before. This from the film ‘Shoukeen’ from 1949. The film is produced under the banner of Gautam Chitra, Bombay, and is directed by Nanabhai Bhatt. This is another stunt film that came the way of Chitragupt for music direction. The star cast of this film includes Bhagwan, Baburao, Chand Barq, Kanta, Yunus, Nadir, Baalaram, Seetaram. And the dog Moti once again has a place in the credits.

Just out of curiosity, I scanned the blog, for the listing of songs that have been composed by Chitragupt. And I find a peculiar thing. As a composer, Chitragupt started his career in 1946, and continued to be active till the early 80s. On the blog we have just about a dozen of his songs listed, for the first 10 years of his career (1946-1955), with no songs listed for the first four years i.e. from 1946 to 1949. When I tried to check online, I find that actually very little of his works are available online from this period. But still there are some. And I will try to post some of them over the coming few days.

This blog has 78 songs composed by Sajjad Hussain and that leaves about 20 more Sajjad Hussain songs that are yet to be covered.
These remaining songs are rare songs that are difficult to find and they may be available only with private dedicated collectors. I had mentioned in one of my earlier posts that I had the privilege of meeting Mr Bakshshish Singh in Sudhir jee’s residence. He has a nice collection of old and obscure songs and he is ever willing to share them. While leaving, he left his portable hard disk with Sudhir jee for him to see what was useful for him. Next day, when I was again in Sudhir Jee’s residence, I looked at the contents of the hard disk and copied some of it as may fit in my pen drive.

‘Kaali Ghata'(1980) was a suspense thriller movie with Rekha having a double role. Shashi Kapoor played the male lead. Music was by Laxmikant Pyarelal and lyricist was Anand Bakshi. Actually my favourtie song in this film is “Kaali Ghata Chaayi prem rut aayi” Which is either a solo Rafi or Lata -Rafi duet. Various links are giving different description of that song. I sent the lyrics of that song long ago, but it is posted recently on the blog. Listening to the haunting music and echo sound of that song on our old Philips Radio was an amazing experience. That sound still haunts me and I have heard the song many times on FM radio too but it is not the same.
