Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ye haseen taare teri yaad dilaa dete hain

Posted on: March 3, 2013

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The world of non-film songs is altogether another dimension that is both very prolific, as well as very endearing. If we try to go after the non film domain, it would definitely turn out to be many times bigger than the film song domain. Rightly so, because in that domain there are no limits other than that the song does not belong to any film. On this blog, we are showcasing the non film genre also. But we are following an unstated selection criteria – that the singer(s) and or creators of the non film songs are otherwise associated with films. This criteria makes the expanse of the non film songs being covered (on this blog), both manageable and familiar.

Digging and searching for non film songs is as interesting an exercise as the search for obscure and rare film songs themselves. More so, because the genre of non film songs has been cared for to an even lesser extent. Only the real fans and lovers of music try to keep track and continue to search for them. To start with, the non film songs, barring some exceptional exceptions, were generally manufactured in quantities lesser than film songs. In their own right, this treasure of songs is equally enthralling and memorable. The radio used to play them, and they have stayed in the collective memory of the connoisseurs. And even with this small mercy, there are some real gems, that did not get aired much on the radio, but have left startling and lasting memories in the minds of many.

Kamal Barot, a very unique voice, holds to her credit some very memorable numbers from films, that simply cannot be ignored. But her space being limited primarily to B/C grade cinema, many of the numbers sung by her are relatively far more obscure and difficult to trace. And then, when one starts to discuss her non film offerings, at once a more difficult proposition presents itself. Yes, there is a number of songs that she has rendered in the non film genre. Infrequent as they may have been in terms of being played on the radio, the connoisseurs remember them, and in this age of the internet, they continue to search for them.

So about three weeks ago, I get this urgent message from AK ji. On his blog, he has posted a write up and a wonderful selection of Kamal Barot’s film songs. This post was uploaded on 21st March, 2011, and can be accessed here on Songs of Yore. In this post, AK ji has primarily covered a memorable set of film songs rendered by her. But then, over the period of next two years, (i.e. till the present), there have been numerous comments posted by readers, who write about having heard her non film offerings, and are simply craving to get hold of them and hear them again. I was not aware of this situation, till about three weeks back, when AK ji wrote to me, asking about Kamal Barot’s non film songs. The word he used was ‘desperate’ to describe the searching queries by some readers. So then I checked out the post and was actually thrilled to see such a delightful collection of her film songs, at one place. And then I also got to read the numerous messages requesting to track down and post her non film songs, some of which have been specifically identified.

This song is one of those, that the readers on AK ji’s blog have requested for. After a couple of message exchanges with AK ji, I was able to confirm to him that I have some of the requested songs in my collection, and promised to upload them at the earliest. A wonderful song, that has been rendered by Kamal Barot in her unique style. In trying to search for more
information about this song, I found varying information. At one place the lyricist of this song is indicated as Hasrat Jaipuri, and from another source, the information says that the song is penned by Indeevar. The music director’s name is available only at one place, and that information names Kishore Desai as the composer of this lovely tune. I would request the more knowledgeable readers to please help to confirm the information about this song.

A song that talks about memories of love. And one just wonders about the turn of phrase and the words that the poets are able to conjure up. The songs contains a superlative expression of missing the loved one, and the remorse and disappointment on not being able to meet or even see in dreams.

“aa ke sapnon mein bhi daaman ko bachaane waale”

Wow, what an expression. The loved one is able to evade even the dreams that may come – an ultimate sadness.

So listen to this rare sound, restored once again, thanks to the prompting queries of AK ji and the readers on his blog. And savor its expressive sadness.

ye haseen taare teri yaad dilaa detey hain
pyaar ki aag mein aur aag lagaa detey hain

Ah, these lovely stars adorning the firmament
So much remind me of you, they do
And they feed the fires of remorse
Adding more flames
To the smoldering blaze of love

aa ke sapnon mein bhi daaman ko bachaane waale
tu salaamat rahe raaton ko rulaane waale
mere aansoon bhi tujhe aaj duaa detey hain

You avoid me, even in my dreams
Walking the distant fringes of fancy
Beyond the reach of even my thoughts
Making me weep in the nights
May you be happy and protected
Even my tears today
Foster this blessing upon you

tu ne dekhi hain bahut jhoomte baagon ki bahaar
aa kabhi dekh jaa dil ke bhi do daagon ki bahaar
zakhm ke phool mere gham ka pataa detey hain

You may have witnessed
Many a seasons of spring
In the gardens swaying with happiness
O wish, you may come and see the celebration
Of the wounds of this poor heart
These bruises, these bleeding flowers
Recount the saga of my sorrows

Many may not agree but I feel Noorjehan songs after she immigrated to Pakistan sounded very much like KB and also the style of singing
