Mujhko sanam tere pyaar ne jeena sikha diya

Posted on: March 4, 2013

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

In the olden days, Radio Ceylon was the catalyst of that kept the memories of old gems of 1930s and 1940s and even early 1950s alive in the minds of listeners. However, one cannot underestimate the contribution of Vivid Bharati in popularising the gems of latter 50s and 60s among the Hindi film songs. In fact, some of the songs from the films which failed miserably in the box office survived in the memories of listeners thanks to Vivid Bharati. I can recall a few such songs that I became aware of because they were often played on Vivid Bharati : tum jo huye mere hamsafar (1958), ye hawa ye fiza ye samaa (1958), baithhe hain rehguzar par dil ka diyaa jalaaye (1959), bahaaron se poochho mere pyaar ko tum (1960), nigaahein na phero chale jaayenge ham,(1960), tum jo aao to pyaar aa jaaye (1962). These are the only teasers and there are many more such songs already covered in this blog.

The lovers of Hindi film songs are grateful to Pandit Narendra Sharma, Hindi poet and lyricist who conceived the idea of Vivid Bharati. As the Chief Producer of Hindi section since its inception in 1957 until 1977, he was instrumental in bringing these gems of Hindi film songs to the notice of the public at large through the medium of Vivid Bharati. Incidentally, Pandit Narendra Sharma’s birth centenary was on February 28, 2013 which completely went out of my mind. It is never late to write an article on Panditji in his centenary year.

Coming back to the gems of old Hindi film songs of Vivid Bharati days, I came across one of such songs ‘mujhko sanam tere pyaar ne’ from the film FLYING RANI (1959) sung by Manna Dey and Asha Bhonsle. The song was written by Nazmi Kanpuri and set to music by B N Bali. The film was produced under the banner of Desai Films and was directed by Nanubhai Vakil. The star cast included Samar Roy, Nishi, Ram Singh, Prakash etc. This is the first time I am hearing the name of the lyricist Nazmi Kanpuri. Music Director B N Bali has been associated with Hindi film industry during 1949-1977 both as a music director and an occasional playback singer. He was also associated with Punjabi films.

Only the audio clip of this song is available. But I felt that this song with its sweet lyrics, soft renditions and soothing music is better enjoyed by listening than watching the video clip.

Lyrics

mujhko sanam tere pyaar ne
jeena sikhaa diyaa
aa aa aa aa
teri kasam teri yaad ne
sab kuchh bhula diyaa
aa aa aa aa
mujhko sanam tere pyaar ne
jeena sikhaa diyaa

ho o o o
teri kasam teri yaad ne
sab kuchh bhulaa diyaa
aa aa aa aa
mujhko sanam tere pyaar ne

dil jo miley to ham naye
sapno mein kho gaye

aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa
dil jo miley to ham naye
sapno mein kho gaye
saare jahaan ko chhod ke
ham tere ho gaye
ho o o o

meethi nazar se dekh ke
yoon muskuraa diyaa
aa aa aa aa
teri kasam teri yaad ne
sab kuchh bhulaa diyaa
aa aa aa aa
mujhko sanam tere pyaar ne

tujhko khabar hai bekhabar
jo meraa haal hai
aa aa aa
ab main hoon aur har ghadi
teraa khayaal hai
ae ae ae ae
tere khayaal ke siwaa
sab kuchh lutaa diyaa

ho o o
teri kasam teri yaad ne
sab kuchh bhula diyaa
aa aa aa

(hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm)
mujhko sanam tere pyaar ne
jeena sikhaa diyaa
(aa aa aa aa aa aa)

To Asha and Manna Dey:

Much as I would agree about the Vividness of Vividh Bharati, please correct the spelling.

I have not heard this song in ages. Brings back those lovely days when I used to go around with the transistor glued to my ear.
