The film “Baghaawat” (1982) must be a typical Sultan Ahmed film. It is easy to guess this much from this one song only which I knew from the days it was a new and popular song and played regularly on Radio. I have seen this song also earlier maybe on T.V. because I hav’nt seen this film. A few days back, maybe weeks,
one similar situation song was posted on the blog, which brought this song to mind. I searched and found the link, and been wanting to discuss this song since then.
This is a duet by Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle. Lyricist is Anand Bakshi and music is by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The situation here is Hema Malini is a princess and angry with her father and suiter (?) Amjad Khan. She has closed herself in her room and refusing to open the door. Enter the duo Dharmendra and Reena Roy, disuised as ‘faqeers’. They start singing this song to get to Hema Malini, who eventually opens the door and lets them in to her room. Than she recognizes Dharmendra, is happy to get some jaadoo treatment to drive the evil spirit out of her body. Reena Roy is a natural in this song and dance routine song, while Dharmendra is doing his best to act like a begger, armed with a begger’s jhola and a bunch of peacock feathers. Hema is not having much to do except show anger and smile as and when required.
I have read somewhere that Anand Bakshi is the lyricist with the highest number of film songs. He came into prominence only in the late 60’s and gained popularity and fame from 70’s. He has not worked with many music Directors of the Golden Era of hindi film music. As far as I can see, his significant work is with Laxmikant Pyarelal, Kalyanji Anandji and R D Burman. He has worked with Roshan in 60’s, namely in films like ‘Devar’ ‘ Commercial pilot Officer’. And he was quite a success with S D Burman, with films like,’Aradhana’, ‘Chupke Chupke’, ‘Anuraag’, ‘Naya Zamaana’ and ‘Ishq par zor nahin’. If one goes by the songs posted in the blog also, his songs with Laxmikant Pyarelal and R D Burman are maximum with Kalyanji Anandji a close third.

Lyrics
mere mehboob tujhe salaam
mere mehboob tujhe salaam
mere mehboob tujhe salaam
salaam salaam salaam
mere mehboob tujhe salaam
o mere mehboob tujhe salaam
mushkil mein jaan aayi aaya
honthon pe teraa naam
mere mehboob tujhe salaam
waah
mere mehboob tujhe salaam
teraa jalwaa khoob
ho teraa pardaa khoob
kya parda kya jalwaa
yeh dil
tujh se hai mansoob
mere mehboob tujhe salaam
mere mehboob tujhe salaam
salaam salaam salaam
mere mehboob tujhe salaam
ho mere mehboob tujhe salaam
meraa habeeb tu hai
meraa naseeb tu hai
meraa habeeb tu hai
meraa naseeb tu hai
dar ka faqeer hoon main
banda aseer hoon main
tujh pe meri nazar hai
mujh se tu bekhabar hai
tujh pe meri nazar hai
mujh se tu bekhabar hai
main apne maherbaan se
ab kya kahoon zubaan se
aahon se ishq mein lete hain
aashiq zubaan ka kaam
mere mehboob tujhe salaam
waah
mere mehboob tujhe salaam
salaam salaam salaam
mere mehboob tujhe salaam
ho mere mehboob tujhe salaam
hai intezaar mushkil
sooni hai dil ki mehfil
kab teri deed hogi
maston ki eid hogi
kab teri deed hogi
maston ki eid hogi
chilman se aa nikal kar
mere haseen dilbar
jo kuchh bhi darmiyaan hai
ud jaayegaa dhuaan hai
parde utthaa rahaa hai saare
shaa’yar ka ye qalaam
mere mehboob tujhe salaam
waah
mere mehboob tujhe salaam
salaam salaam salaam
mere mehboob tujhe salaam
ho mere mehboob tujhe salaam
nazron mein tu hi tu hai
waah waah
bas teri aarzoo hai
yeh berukhi hai kaisi
yeh bekhudi hai kaisi
yeh berukhi hai kaisi
yeh bekhudi hai kaisi
pehchaan
pehchaan yeh nigaahen
yeh aansoo aur yeh aahen
pehchaan yeh nigaahen
yeh aansoo aur yeh aahen
shauq-e-visaal yeh hai
iss dil ka haal yeh hai
lay ke baghair naghmaa jaise
may ke baghair jaam
mere mehboob tujhe salaam
mere mehboob tujhe salaam
ho mere mehboob tujhe salaam

Baghawat was directed and produced and directed by Ramanand Sagar.(It was not directed and produced by Sultan Ahmed. He directed and produced movies like Heera,Dharam Kaanta,
Jai Vikrantha,Daata,Ganga Ki Saugandh)
And it is a co-incidence that in this movie the Late B.M.Vyas(Yesterday or today he passed away)performed Mahamanthri`s role.
