Chhap tilak sab chheeni re mose naina milaayke

Posted on: March 11, 2013

This article is written by Shekhar Gupta, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor of this blog.

Directed by Raj Khosla, Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978) was a Nutan-Vijay Anand-Asha Parekh starrer with the last named being the “Tulsi” of the plot. It’s also known for Lataji’s evergreen title song Main tulsi tere aangan ki – which is already on this Blog.

However, my favourite from this movie is the Lata-Asha duet “Chhap Tilak Sab Chheeni Re Mose Naina Milaayake””. It was originally written by the great Amir Khusro (1253-1325), the sufi mystic, musician, scholar and poet who is also considered to be the Father of Qawwali. His contribution to the development of the ghazal, hitherto little used in India, is particularly significant too. My boyhood friend and music connoisseur Akhilesh Shukla recently rekindled my interest in this number with a mention about its renedition by Ustad Zafar Husian Khan Badauni.

In the “Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki” version, lyricist Anand Bakshi has added a lovely couplet as a befitting prelude to set the stage for the emotions welling from high poetry of Chhap Tilak Sab Chheeni. He has also beautifully adopted Amir Khusro’s traditional lyrics for the movie situation which shows the lover-duo debonair Deb Mukherjee and his love-smitten lady love Naini (played by Neeta Mehta) just when two village artists (Naaz and perhaps Geeta Behl) break into this number. The love-smitten Naini is inexorably drawn – and swept – into the vortex of the emotions flowing incessantly from this erotically romantic number, so exquisitely vocalized by the two nonpareil senior Mangeshkar sisters … and no less superbly tuned by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. It’s a true delight to listen to and behold it unfolding on the screen!

Many have sung Amir Khusro’s this particular composition. Somewhat closer to his original is the version rendered by Ustad Zafar Husian Khan Badauni which is available here. Then, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan has sung it as qawaali which can be accessed on YouTube here.

Deb Mukherjee`s love interest played by Geetha Behl(She was also there with Rishi Kapoor, Moushumi Chatterjee 1980 starrer Do Premee)(She is not Neeta Mehta)
Neeta Mehta in this movie was paired against Vinod Khanna and features in Rafi song “Ye khidki jo bund rehthi hai”

Many thanks for correcting the inaccuracy.

And the two dancers(who lip syncs for the song)are either uncredited professional dancers or junior dancers.T
hey are not Kumari Naaz and Geeta Bahl.(Kumari Naaz performed another role in this movie and by this time, she was almost stopped roles that required dancing).Geeta Behl was the one who romances an aged Debh mukherjii.

Thanks, Prakashji, for the info.

I prefer to hear only the audio of this song(Only for the reason that I felt the Deb Mukherjee sequences are picturised more like
“zabardasti”scene. That picturisation for me takes away the joy/spirit of the song. This is only my personal opinion, Hope you guys don`t mind my observations.)
That`s why I provided a audio link here, Atulji Hope It`s O.K.

Thanks Shekhar ji for the lyrics

Regards
Prakash

I am a big fan of this Amir Khusrau song. I have heard it sung by Nusrat Fateh ali Khan and many others in the form of Qawwali. But this song was where I first heard it.

Pray, somebody enlighten me on the meaning of ‘chaap tilak’ which eludes me.

Thanks.

Poetic translation of “chhaap tilak sab chheeni re mose naina milaayke” would be “you’ve taken away my looks, my identity, by just a glance”. “Chaap” is ‘stamp’ or identity; “tilak” relates to looks.

Thanks, Shekhar Ji, that makes sense.

In the write up above, I have mentioned that many have sung Chhap Tilak Sab Chheeni, and also provided the links to the versions by Ustad Zafar Husian Khan Badauni and Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Usman, my friend from Pakistan, has kindly mentioned about the version performed by Naheed Akhtar under the baton of Wazir Afzal.
