Lata Mangeshkar sang only 11 duets with G M Durrani. 6 out of these 11 have been sung in 1948-49. In the book ‘Lata Mangeshkar …. in her own voice – Conversations with Nasreen Munni Kabir’ (2009), she has mentioned that her first song for Naushad was a duet with G M Durrani haay chhore ki zaat badi bewafaa for ‘Chaandni Raat'(1949). At that time Durrani made some personal remarks about the necklace she was wearing. She did not like his remarks and brought this to the notice of Naushad. Knowing that she was a sensitive person, Naushad replaced Durrani and took Sadat Khan for her second duet in the same film. However, this duet was edited out from the film.
Some attribute the subsequent set back in G M Durrani’s playback singing career to this incidence with Lata Mangeshkar. I guess that she was just emerging as a playback singer and was not in a position of strength to boycott him. It is interesting to note that Lata Mangeshkar has not mentioned anything about not singing with him after the incidence in the book. I find that she sang with him up to 1956.
The main reasons for the decline of G M Durrani’s playback singing career are seemingly of his own making. He had said in a radio interview in 1978 that he had turned spiritual after he returned from Haj pilgrimage some time in 1950-51. He felt that with bungalow, cars and other luxuries, he had become a slave of materialism and his playback singing career would make him more materialistic. He stopped playback singing and started avoiding film personalities. He sold his bungalow, cars and distributed the bank balances among needy persons. He shifted to a small house and set up a grocery shop to earn for a simple living.
In any case, his career had reached its zenith around 1950 and it was on a decline as other male playback singers like Mohammed Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Mukesh had already established their foothold in the field of playback singing. It is said that Mohammed Rafi tried to help him by getting him some playback singing assignments. He did get some opportunity for singing but it was too late then to re-establish himself in the midst of a competitive environment. The last film for which he sang as a playback singer was probably ‘Sunhere Kadam’ (1966).
I have chosen for discussion a Lata-Durrani duet ‘kar sakegaa na judaa tumko ’ from the film AAYIYE (1949). The song is written by Nakshab and set to music by Shaukat Haidri (later known as Nashad). The film was produced under the banner of India Productions and directed by Yakub who also acted in the film. The other star cast included Sulochana Chatterjee, Masood, Ashraf Ali, Jankidas, Sheela Naik etc. Two Lata-Durrani duets have already been covered in the blog.
The song has been one of my favourites ever since I had heard on my Radio Ceylon days. I was pleasantly surprised to find the audio clip to listen to this lovely song after a gap of more than 5 decades.

Did Durrani dig his own grave? I have long wondered why he had to fade away notwithstanding the fact that other singers were slowly establishing themselves and could easily replace Durrani.
