Jab jab hota naash dharam ka

Posted on: April 15, 2013

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

BHAGVADGEETA is one of our cultural heritage books. It is a part of Mahabharat and is also a part of Bramhopnishad-which is a scripture on Yogas.

This is a dialogue between Lord Shri Krishna and Arjun. The legend says that when Kauravas and Pandavas stood opposite each others for a war on Kurukshetra, Dhritrashtra, the blind father of Kauravas asked Sanjay- who had the divine power of seeing the war at Kurukshetra- to describe him the war happennings. Sanjay starts and in the course of his reporting, the entire Geeta too is narrated.

Without going into the details further, enough to stress that Lord Shrikrishna explains to Arjuna that, whenever there is a decline of Dharma and righteousness, He takes birth from age to age (sambhavami yuge yuge), to protect the virtuous, destroy evil-doers and to reestablish Dharma and righteousness.

This is described in the IV chapter, stanzas 7 and 8 in Bhagvadgeeta thus-

“Yada Yada Hi Dharmasya
Glanirva Bhavathi Bharatha,
Abhyuthanam Adharmaysya
Tadatmanam Srijami Aham’.

Bhagavad Gita (Chapter IV-7)

“Whenever there is decay
of righteousness O! Bharatha
And a rise of unrighteousness
then I manifest Myself!”

Praritranaya Sadhunam
Vinashaya Cha Dushkritam
Dharamasansthapnaya
Sambhavami Yuge-Yuge.”

Bhagavat Gita (Chapter IV-8)

“For the protection of the good,
for the destruction of the wicked and
for the establishment of righteousness,
I am born in every age.”

This is exactly what today’s song also says , melodiously in Hemant Kumar’s voice from film- Prabhu ki Maaya-1955.

‘Jab jab hota nash dharam ka’ was one of the frequent songs on All India Radio in the late 50s and early 60s. Early in the mornings, the voice of Hemant Kumar brought to us the essence of Geeta and it was such a pleasure to listen to him.

Lata Mangeshkar had once said in an inteview,” When I see Hemant Kumar singing, I feel some sadhu is singing !”. Truly, his is a saintly voice in Bhajans.

Generally it is found that people respect Religion, but when it comes to even obvious details, they are confused. For example, how many people can tell correctly whether Shri Ram came first or Krishna on this Earth ? Or, how many people can tell the names of the 10 Avatars of God ? Or how many people know the names of the wives of Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughna- all brothers of Shri Ram ? Or how many can even tell the names of 4 Yugas or 4 Vedas ?

Here are The God’s 10 Avtaars serially-

SN Name of avatar and Yug
1 Matsya-(The fish) in Satyayug
2 Koorma-(The Tortoise) in Satyug
3 Varah-(The Boar)- in Satyug
4 Narsimha-(Half Lion-Half man)in Satyug
5 Waman-(The Dwarf) in Treta Yug
6 Parshuram-(The warrior saint) in Treta Yug
7 Shri Ram in Treta yug
8 Balarama in Dwapar Yug
9 Shri Krishna in Dwapar Yug
10 Kalki (yet to come) in Kali Yug

( In some cases Gautama the buddha is also considered as an Avatar in place of Balram)

Actually, one can see the Human Evolution and the history of Human race in these Avtars. I feel that they are indicative of the Development of Human Race and their Sociological structure.

The First 4 are the evolution of Life and Humans

Waman is about the Domination of bramhins.

Parshuram is about the Conflict of the Rulers and the Pontiff.

Shri Rama as the Ideal King, how he should be.

Balrama is to stress importance of Agriculture.

Shri Krishna to teach us how to live Life and finally

Kalki will indicate self-destruction of Human Beings.

This is how I interprete these Avtars. ( By the way, the pairs are Lakshman-Urmila, Bharat-Mandavi and Shatrughna-Shrutikirti. The 4 vedas are Rig-, Saam-, Atarva- and yajur ved).

The film PRABHU KI MAAYA-1955 was produced by Filmistan. It was directed by Vithaldas Panchotiya and the music was by Ravi( who was assistant to Hemant Kumar earlier). The Lyrics were by S K Deepak and Pt.Madhur. The cast was Prem Adib, Vithaldas Panchotiya, Mubarak, Sheela, Uma Devi, Kanu Roy, Ram Avtar, Parshuram, Rooplaxmi etc.

The Director Vithaldas Panchotiya was a noted Music Director of the early era. He was also an actor and Director. He started with Madan Theatres, Calcutta. He was the hero in in the film ‘ “Muflis Ashiq”-1932 which was India’s First comedy film. HE was the Director and Composer too in the movie. In addition he also sang 5 songs out of the 29 songs in the film. He was director and music director in almost 25 films and then concentrated only on acting and Direction.(Actress Deepshikha Nagpal- actress in Koyla, Badshah, Partner etc-is his granddaughter).

The story is-

A landlord is weeping as his son has died of Snake Bite. By coincidence, Swami Atmanand is passing by. Seeing the plight of the father, he revives his son and advises the landlord not to get involved in worldly affairs and lead a detached life like Shukdev. Upon asking about the story, Swami tells the story.

Instigated and coaxed by Narada, Parvati goes to Shiv ji and requests to learn the secret of Amaratva (immortality),so that she can become Amar too. Shivji,in a good mood then, narrates the Tatva to her, but in the long discourse Parvati falls asleep and the rest of the tatva is heard by a small bird-Shukdev. When Shiv ji learns about this, he wants to destro Shukdev. Terrified, Shukdev enters the open mouth of Vyas Muni’s wife, when she is yawning. once inside ,he remains safe for 12 years. It takes a birth and immediately flies away in search of Bramhagyan. Narada takes him to Vyas Muni, who teaches him and then takes him to King Janaka. While in transit Shukdev sees a Lion, killed by king Parikshit get salvation by listening to Shrimad Bhagwat. A thirsty King Parikshit goes to Shyamak muni’s ashram and asks for water. Since the Muni is in samadhi, he does not respond,so irritated, king Parikshit puts a dead snake in his neck. This is seen by muni’s son and he curses Parikshit. To get rid of the curse he goes to Ganga maiya who sends him to Shuk Dev. After listening to Shrimad Bhagwat from Shukdev, King Parikshit goes to heaven freed from the curse.

The film emphasises the need for everyone to read Shrimad Bhagwat daily for total salvation.

Now let us hear this melodious Bhajan in Hemant Kumar’s saintly voice.

Song-Jab jab hota naash dharam ka (Prabhu Ki Maaya)(1955) Singer-Hemant Kumar, Lyrics-Pt Madhur, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

jab jab hota naash dharam ka
aur paap badh jaata hai
tab lete avtaar prabhu
yeh vishwa shaanti paata hai
jab jab hota naash dharam ka
aur paap badh jaata hai
tab lete avtaar prabhu
yeh vishwa shaanti paata hai

jab kans ke atyaachaaron se
yeh bhoomandal behaal huaa
jab vipra sant tyaagi vairaagi
ka paapi mahaakaal huaa
jab prithvi ke har aansoo par
tukde tukde paataal huaa
tab garbh se sati devki ke
utpann aathvaan laal huaa
phir vasudev nij laal ko
mathura se gokul le jaata hai
phir vasudev nij laal ko
mathura se gokul le jaata hai
avtaar paalne mein jhoole
sansaar loriyaan gaata hai
jab jab hota naash dharam ka
aur paap badh jaata hai
tab lete avtaar prabhu
yeh vishwa shaanti paata hai

jab mitti khaate kaanha kunwar ko
dhara yashoda maiyya ne
munh khol ke saara vishw dikhaaya
maa ko krishn kanhaiyya ne
kahin matki phodi
maakhan khaaya
mohan maakhan chor baney ae
kahin matki phodi
maakhan khaaya
mohan maakhan chor baney
kahin yamuna tat par
chir gopiyon ke har kar barjor baney
kahin maut bakaasur ki aati
anyaayi maara jaata hai
aur kaalia naag ke darp dalan se
shyam shyam kehlaata hai
jab jab hota naash dharam ka
aur paap badh jaata hai
tab lete avtaar prabhu
yeh vishwa shaanti paata hai

haath baansuriya
mor mukut man bhaata hai
gopal se goraksha ka yoon
updesh hamen mil jaata hai
phir kaamdhenu aur devraj ne
mohan ka abhishek kiya
aur varun ke bandhan se natwar ne
nand pitaa ko chhudaa liye
brij baalaaon ko aur gopion ko
mohan ne moh liya
aur radha ke vyaakul hriday ne
unhen pukaara piyaa piyaa
tab raas rachaa kar raas rachaiyya
murli madhur bajaata hai
nar mein naari naari mein nar
yeh bhed hamen samjhaata hai

phir idhar raas mein bansi bajti
udhar sudarshan chalta thha
is tarah kans ka ek ek
baldhaari yodhha marta thha
jab ghhada paap ka bhara to dekha
mathura ke nar naari ne
phir dans kans ka kiya
devkinandan krishn muraari ne
phir naach uthha prithvi ka kan kan
gagan pushp barsaata hai
jo katha bhaagwat ki sunta
bhavsaagar se tar jaata hai
jab jab hota naash dharam ka
aur paap badh jaata hai
tab lete avtaar prabhu
yeh vishwa shaanti paata hai

Arunji,
Thank you for the informative post and a beautiful bhajan by Hemant Kumar.
You have mentioned that VP sang 5 songs out of 29 songs in the film, Muflis Ashiq-32. Is this movie holding a record of most songs in Hindi (or any) cinema?

Khyati ji
In the first few years all Talkie films had plenty of songs. In 1932,
Radhe shyam had 29 songs
Raas Vilas 29
Guluru Zarina- 33
Chatra bakavali 49 songs etc.
The most songs’ record is still held by INDRA SABHA -1932 with a
whopping 71 songs !

72 songs in a movie of may be 160/180 mins long!!!!!!!! Mera dimaag nahin chalta hai that if a song is even two mins long, how can they fit story/dialogue in remaining few mins.
Thank you Arunji for the info.

Khyati ji,
I have not seen that film, but from what I read about it,it seems there were no dialogues in the conventional sense in that film.Every conversation was in verses only.

Thanks for the bhajan. SriKrishna is considered as the avatar in Dwapar Yug and Balaram is the avatar of Shesh Naag not SriHari Vishnu

Mohan ji,
You are right about Balram.
May be that is the reason for replacing it with Gautama the Budhha.

Arun ji,

This is a wonderful bhajan that describes many pastimes of Lord Krishna. Thanks for posting this.

The video clip, although is from the legitimate disc release of this film, still has many small cuts. Many words and even some full lines are missing.

I have located the complete lyrics from Hemant Geet Kosh (compiled by Sh. Raj Singh Rana of New Delhi), and have sent the same to Atul ji, with Devnagari transliteration. I am in the process to locate the complete audio clip of this song, and will post it shortly.

Arun ji, Mohan ji, Atul ji,

There is a bit of conflicting description of the avtara (incarnations) of Lord Vishnu. Different schools of philosophy have slight variations in how they list the complete incarnations of Lord Vishnu. These different schools need to be studied in parallel to work up to the larger picture and the broader interpretation of our scriptures.

Listening to the ‘Dasavtara’ hymn from Jayedev’s ‘Geet Govind’, couple of interesting things to note. First, in every stanza, Jayadev reiterates – “Kesava Dhrit [. . .] Sareera, Jaya Jagdeesh Hare”, thereby emphasizing the ‘Kesava’ manifestation as the original Personality, that takes on different forms. He does not use the name ‘Vishnu’. Secondly, Lord Krishna’s name is not included in the list of the 10 incarnations in this hymn. The names listed are

– Kesava Dhrta Meen Sareera (Matasya Avataar – Incarnation as a Fish)
– Kesava Dhrta Kachhap Roopa (Kachhap Avataar – Incarnation as a Tortoise)
– Kesava Dhrta Sookar Roopa (Sookar Avataar – Incarnation as a Boar)
– Kesava Dhrta Narhari Roopa (Narasimha Avataar – Incarnation a Man-Lion)
– Kesava Dhrta Vaaman Roopa (Vaaman Avataar – Incarnation as a Brahmin Child)
– Kesava Dhrta Bhrigupati Roopa (Parsurama Avataar – Incarnation as Parshuram)
– Kesava Dhrta Rama Sareera (Ram Avataar – Incarnation as Lord Ram)
– Kesava Dhrta Haldhar Roopa (Balraam Avataar – Incarnation as Balram, the Plough Carrier)
– Kesava Dhrta Buddh Sareera (Buddh Avataar – Incarnation as Lord Buddha)
– Kesava Dhrta Kalki Sareera (Kalki Avataar – Incarnation as Kalki, the Horseman Warrior who will rid this creation of all sins)

Now, going into the magnum opus of Lord Ved Vyaasa – ‘Shrimad Bhaagwatam’. Vishnu himself is manifest in many forms – as Vishnu, as Maha Vishnu, and as Hiranyagarbh Vishnu. Further, in ‘Shrimad Bhaagwatam’, the complete list of incarnations given is actually 24. This list starts with the manifestation of Adi Purush, the Original Pre Eminent being, with whom the cycle of creation starts. The list goes on to include the Sanat Kumaras, Naarad Muni, Ved Vyaasa, Kapila Rishi, Dattatreyaa, Rishabh Dev, Dhanvantri, Mohini etc. besides including the Dasavataras, the 10 prinicipal incarnations. Once again, the complete list does not include the name of Lord Krishna.

The Gauriya school of philosophy goes by the ‘Shrimad Bhaagwatam’. There is one sloka in this epic that states “Krsna’stu Bhagwaan Swayam” – that Lord Krishna is the Original Person and is The God himself. He is the source of everything, means everything emanates from him. In this school of philosophy, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are manifest after Lord Krishna. And that is why,’Shrimad Bhaagwatam’ does not claim Lord Krishna to be an incarnation. A careful study of this epic will reveal that as per Sage Ved Vyaasa, every incarnation is that of Lord Krishna Himself. And in Dwaapar Yug, He graces this earth by appearing as Himself, not as an incarnation. The accompanying incarnation is in the person of Elder Brother, Haldhar, or Balraam, the plough carrier. In that sense, this is a very significant departure from the beliefs. Lord Krishna, is simply Himself, and has appeared only once on this earth, as Himself. All other representations are enumerated as Avtaaras, incarnations.

These interpretations, although have been discussed and documented over the centuries, they still appear to lead to conflicting views. I believe that the different schools of philosophy discuss the same basic truth with variations and interpretations that are representatives of the different emotions of the human mind. The ‘dvaita’, ‘advaita’, ‘vishisht advaita’, ‘bheda-abheda achintya-vaad’ etc. schools of philosophy have developed over the centuries, as a relfection of how the concept of the Primal Person appeals to the mind if different people. Whether one believes to be one with God, whether one believes to be in service of God, whether one believes to be one with, and yet in service of God etc. And there are multiple layers within each – even a lifetime may not be enough to analyze.

Sudhir ji,
Thanks for your efforts in getting the other view too.
Actually, this is the strength of our religion that a) it is not rigid about anything and b) it accommodates various views and opinions from various experts from time to time.
This flexibility makes it easier to follow it.
Sometime back I had dwelt upon Shruti and Smriti- the two ancient ways of passing on the knowledge from generation to generations since the Vedic periods.
Shruti is what is heard from elders and passed on to youngsters and Smriti is what is accumulated by memories and passed on to
subsequent generations.
It was natural that there would be differences in informations over a period of time ,say 500 or 1000 years. in many cases additions and deletions were also made by exponents.
Thus we have various theories and stories on same issues.
Thanks for taking so much efforts on explaining Dashavatars.
