There are some old film and non-filmy songs of 30s and 40s which I was aware of during my childhood not because of the radio or later the internet but by words of mouth. I heard those songs from my parents, relatives and even some friends of our family. During my childhood, I was not very fond of those songs. Later, as a teenager, I had heard some of those songs on Radio Ceylon which gave me a sort of reminder that I had heard those songs earlier. I got 78 RPM records of a few of those songs mostly by accident during early 70s. Since then, I have developed a liking for those type of songs. Later, with the advent of internet, it was a ‘memory recall’ for me when I listened to most of these songs again.
Whenever I listen to those old songs of 30s and 40s, it becomes an occasion for me not only to remember those associated with the songs but also an occasion to remember my parents, relatives, and old family friends through whom I got introduced to such songs in my childhood. None of them are alive today but these songs keep their memories alive in my mind. Just a couple of days back, I suddenly remembered the mukhda and tune of the song ‘mere baba ne baat meri maan li, mere baba ne, mere baba ne’ which I had heard in early 50s from my mother. After searching, I came to know that this song was from ‘Shankutala’ (1943). Unfortunately I could not locate any audio/video/mp3 clips of the song.
But a few days back, I was lucky to get the audio clipping of yet another forgotten song which I had heard in my childhood. The song is ‘na kar itna pyaar panchhi’ (C.1940), a NFS composed and sung by Pankaj Mullick. The name of the lyricist is not known. Pankaj Mullick’s voice seems to be best suited for philosophical and sentimental songs. He sang many such genre of songs both filmy and non-filmy.
For the old timers, the NFS under discussion would be indeed a nostalgic song rendered by Pankaj Mullick in his typical style.

Songs such as this will never die and will be remembered by music lovers. Alas, their (music lovers) number is shrinking!!
