The Voice of Mukesh #30
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
‘O Jaanewaale’ is kind of an unheard film from 1948. Searching for the next installment in this series of Mukesh songs, I come across this film, which probably I would have simply overlooked otherwise. Produced under the banner of Navhind Pictures, Bombay, it is directed by S Sardesai. The star cast includes Geeta Desai, Trilok Kapoor, Umakant, Pande, Mehar Sultana, Manchi Thoothi, RB Rohini, and Master Chandrakant. The music of this film is by a music director whose name sounds totally unfamiliar – Ali Hussain Moradabadi, a name that appears on this blog for the first time today. The film has seven songs, penned by three poets by the names Kaifi, Mustafa an S Sardesai. However, there is no specific information that links a poet’s name to each song.
The singing voices are those of Shamshad Begum and Mukesh. And it is simply these voices that have made this song be such an enchanting piece of music. When Mukesh articulates the line ‘humko bhool na jaana’, it simply blows you away.
Listen to this wonderful creation, and wonder how and why such gems have been left to sit in the darkness of obscurity. And also wonder how many more such gems are still to be discovered.
PS-With this song, Shamshad Begam completes her 300th song in the blog.

Sudhirji,
Thanks for the post and the rare gem.
Cineplot website attributes the music direction to Pankaj Mallick.
I am sure you must be 100% right as I can understand the efforts taken to trace such songs, but just thought of writing what I came across. Kindly confirm.
Regards.

Atul ji, Mahesh ji, Bluefire ji,
I think I have some insight into the issue that relates to the information available on Cineplot.
I checked the Geet Kosh. In the Geet Kosh, the film ‘O Jaanewaale’ is listed at Serial No. 872 on page 436 of volume 2. Verily, all the details that pertain to this film have already been incorporated into the write up above.
When I check the next entry, I find that at Serial No. 873 on page 437 of volume 2, the film listed is ‘Oonch Neech’. This film is a New Theatres release in 1948, directed by Hem Chander, music by Pankaj Mullick, and star cast as Bharati Devi, Sumitra Devi, Chandrawati, Pal Mahendra, Hiralal, Ansari, Purnendu, Gopal Mehra, Deendayal, Deepali, Indira, Ramesh, Nirupama.
When I check the Cineplot database for the film ‘O Jaanewaale’, I find that the name of the film is that, but the description has been taken from the film immediately next in the Geet Kosh. Most likely the result of a careless action to transcribe the information from the Geet Kosh. ‘O Jaanewaale’ is not a New Theatres film and does not have Pankaj Mullick as its music director. The information on Cineplot is incorrect. (Please see at http://cineplot.com/data/search1.php?yearsearch=o+janewale&yeardropdown=begins&submit=Submit)
I am reminded of a scene from the film ‘Joru Ka Ghulaam’ (1972). Nanda is a daughter of a rich man, who has never seen inside of a kitchen. Love gets her married to Rajesh Khanna, a struggling young man. They set up a home and Nanda enters the kitchen for the first time in her life, armed with a book of recipes. The scene is that she has the book open sitting on the kitchen counter, as she is cooking a vegetable dish. She does some steps, then turns away for a minute, a whiff of breeze from the window comes and flips one page. Nanda turns back and continues from where she thinks she left off. The next instruction is to add 100 gms of sugar, and she innocently does it. The resultant scene on the dinner table with Rajesh Khanna and his friend Gurnam sitting down for the meal are both hilarious and tense.
I beleive a similar thing happened here when Cineplot was transcribing information about the film ‘O Jaanewaale’ from Geet Kosh. Picked up the right name but picked up the details from the next entry in Geet Kosh, which is for film ‘Oonch Neech’.
So that should sort out the identification problem.
To the questions that have been raised in the comments, my research so far into the Mukesh Geet Kosh and other sources, has the following results.
1. Mukesh has NOT sung under the music direction of Pankaj Mullick.
1a. Mukesh has NOT sung any song for films produced by New Theatres.
2. Mukesh has NOT sung for Prithviraj Kapoor.
3. Mukesh has NOT sung for Rishi Kapoor.
4. Incidentally, Mukesh has sung for all three Kapoor brothers, Raj, Shashi and Shammi.
5. Mukesh has sung for Trilok Kapoor in two films ‘Pyaar Ki Baaten’ (1951) and about 4 lines in a group song in ‘Main Sunder Hoon’ (1971).
6. In this film, ‘O Jaanewaale’, the two Mukesh duets are probably performed by Trilok Kapoor on screen. I have requested Harish ji and others to help with identification and will update as soon as I have some more information.
I thank Bluefire ji and Khyati ji for identifying and locating the song for ‘Rangila Ratan’ that is played in the background.
Rgds

Sudhir ji, Bluefire ji,Khyati ji,
THANKS ALL FOR THE CRYSTAL CLEAR CLARIFICATIONS.
Mukesh sang for all three brothers, but I think Rafi saab had the rare distinction of singing for three Kapoor generations.
I am a very greedy person as far as info enhancement is concerned.
Would request to know if Mukesh has any duets with Jagit Kaur.
What pities me is that, Mukesh almost being the senior most amongst all his contemporaries had so many combinations missing from his career
