Hamse na dil ko lagaana musaafir

“Aankhen” (1950) was produced and directed by Devendra Goel. The movie had Shekhar, Nalini Jaiwant, Bharat Bhushan, Cuckoo, Anwari, Yakub, Yashodhara Katju, Bhudo Advani etc in it.
This movie is of interest to music lovers because it was the debut movie of Madan Mohan as a music director. It is interesting to observe the kind of music that Madan Mohan created in the movie.
The movie had eight songs in it. Madan Mohan utilise the services of as many as six singers and four lyricists in these eight songs. Interstingly enough, Lata was not among the six singer of this movie. And as far as the lyricists were concerned, Madan Mohan repeated only one of these lyricists in his subsequent movies.
So one can say that Madan Mohan was tying to find his feet as a music director in this movie. Like a debutant music director wanting to create a good first impression, Madan Mohan created songs of several genres in this movie, viz, expression of love, melancholic song, broken heart song, rail song, light hearted song etc. It would appear that the “Aankhen” (1950) song that became the most popular those days was the Meena Kapoor classic Mori atariya pe kaaga bole. When one looks back at the list of the songs, one finds that almost all of them are still hummable songs and most of them are still well known to music lovers.
The movie had its share of melancholic songs, viz. Ham ishq mein barbaad hain barbaad rahenge, Mohabbat karne waalon ka yahi anjaam hota hai , Preet lagaa ke maine ye phal paayaa and Qismat ne hamen majboor kiya. But it is the light hearted songs from this movie that turn out to be the surprise packages. The lovely light hearted duet Hamse nain milaana BA pass karke which was sung by Shamshad Begam and Mukesh. Then this movie had a delightful light hearted rail song viz. Rail me jiya mora sananan hoye re. This song was sung with gusto- not by a regular singer but by Raj Khosla, who later shone in movies in a different capacity, viz as a movie director.
The above seven songs are available on YT alongwith their video, but the eight and final song from the movie seems to be unavailable as of now. This song is a surprise package as well. This song is sung by Shamshad Begam and Madan Mohan ! So this was the very first occasion that Madan Mohan sang a song in Hindi movies under his own music direction (he had sung a song a duet with Lata under Ghulam Haider’s music direction in 1948).
Here is this rare duet from “Aankhen” (1950) which is sung by Shamshad Begam and Madan Mohan. The fun lyrics of this song are written by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan.
Only the audio of this song is available and so we are deprived of watching the picturisation of this interesting song. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.
With this song, “Aankhen” (1950) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog. As many as 85 movies composed by Madan Mohan figure in the blog. I notice that it is the 20th movie with Madan Mohan’s composition that are fully covered in the blog.
Song-Hamse na dil ko lagaana musaafir(Aankhen)(1950) Singers-Shamshad Begum, Madan Mohan, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-Madan Mohan
Lyrics
hamse na dil ko lagaana musaafir
hamse na nazren milaana ji
apna muhalla jaaoge bhool baabu
hamri gali nahin aana ji
chaar paisa hat khareeda
aur
pandrah ki necktie
aaa
pyaar ka sauda karne aaye
mile ?? bai
tirchhi nazar se dekha tumhe
bal khaake jo li angdaayi
to hat girega paaon mein jaa
dheeli ho jaayegi nektie
kaahe ko tum apne dil ka banaate
hamri nazar ka nishaana ji
apna muhalla jaaoge bhool baabu
hamri gali nahin aana ji
gora mukhda chaand sa
soorat haay ?? ki ot
ek jhalak ham dekh ke chup
ghar jaayenge laut
gorey gorey mukhde se ghoonghat hataa ke
hamne kiya jo ishaara
to daudegi chan chan bijli badan mein
din hi mein deekhega taara
kaahe ko aisa dhandha karo jo
peeche pade pachhtaana ji
apna muhalla jaaoge bhool baabu
hamri gali nahin aana ji
hamse na dil ko lagaana musaafir
hamse na nazren milaana ji
apna muhalla jaaoge bhool baabu
hamri gali nahin aana ji

Lovely song.
The missing words sound like :
pyaar ka sauda karne aaye
mile ‘ tum ho ‘ bai
to hat girega paaon mein jaa
‘ dheeli ‘ ho jaayegi necktie
gora mukhda chaand sa
soorat ‘ hat ‘ ki ot
