“Waapas”(1943) is a very old movie. Little is known about this movie today. But we in this movie have all the details about this movie, thanks to our beloved in house encyclopaedia, Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh. Here is what he has to say about this movie:

WAPAS-1943 was a film of New Theatres, Calcutta and was directed by Hemchandra Chunder, music was by R C Boral and Lyrics by Munshi Zakir Hussain, Pt.Bhushan and Akhtar Chugtai. The story, screenplay and dialogues were by Binoy Chatterjee.

New Theatres(as also some other production houses of Bengal) had kept a Master in Hindi/Hindustani in their story department, whose job was to ensure good hindi dialogues and later good diction and pronunciations of the actors while delivering the dialogues. It just goes to show how much importance was given to such finer details those days to ensure quality.

Wapas was a typical Village-city life/culture conflict movie. Those days Gandhiji was advocating movement to the villages “Gaon Chalo “. What a far-sighted approach to the problem of the future !

Hiren Babu(Indu Mukherjee), a retired person moves into quiet Rampur village along with his daughter Shobha(Bharati Devi),who is educated. She falls in love with the village boy Shyam(Asit Baran) son of Deven Babu(Nawab) who has initial small quarrel with her. They decide to get married, but to their dismay both families oppose the marriage. Deven Babu, a known miser wants a large Dowry and knowing he will not get it, criticises the city culture which has spoiled the girl, Shobha. This can not be tolerated by Hiren Babu and he decides to leave the village and go back to city.

Hiren Babu and Shobha return to city and Hiren gets a job. One day his boss Dutt Babu(Gopal Das) and his wife(Raj Laxmi) happen to be in their house and see Shobha. They ask Hiren Babu for her hand for their nephew Rajendra(Dhiraj Bhattacharya). Both sides agree for the marriage.

Meanwhile, Shyam comes to city in search of Shobha and takes up a job as coachman with Rajendra. One day, when Rajendra takes Shobha for a coach ride, the lovers see each other. Rajendra suspects and asks them. They tell him all the true story.

Rajendra decides to ensure that lovers get married and Shyam replaces him, while he becomes the coachman at the marriage time. After the marriage, everything is revealed and the elders realise that love is greater than anything else and all return(WAPAS) to the village.

This was a good film but not a great success.

Four songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.

Here is the fifth song from the movie. This song is a duet which is sung by Binota Roy/ Indrani Mukherji and Asit Baran and picturised on Bharati Devi and Asit Baran. According to comments on YT, the female voice was that of Binota Roy in the record version, Shaila Devi had sung in the movie version. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on this matter.

Pt Bhushan is the lyricist. Music is composed by R C Boral.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

ghor andhera chhaaye
bina tumhaare in nainan mein

sukh ki saans na aaye

toote dil ke taar bina tumhaare
bina tumhaare
toote dil ke taar bina tumhaare
bina tumhaare

ham se na bhed chhupaao sajni
ham se na bhed chhupaao
khud bano na hamen banaao
ham se na bhed chhupaao sajni
ham se na bhed chhupaao
man mein aur zubaan par aur
bhala ye kaisa dhokha

bhala ye kaisa dhokha
jis ki man mein chaah usi ko

jis ki man mein chaah usi ko
?? wo dhokha
kaun kahega preet ise ye kaisa ulta pyaar
ye kaisa ulta pyaar

jeewan hai bekaar bina tumhaare
bina tumhaare
soona sab sansaar bina tumhaare
bina tumhaare

tum ho o o o
tum ho paas to ujdi bagiyaa
pal bhar mein bas jaaye
pal bhar mein bas jaaye
? zindagi bane anokhi
? zindagi bane anokhi
rangat munh par aaye
rangat munh par aaye
mast hawaa mein hansi khushi ki
mast hawaa mein hansi khushi ki
goonj uthhe jhankaar
goonj uthhe jhankaar

jeewan hai bekaar bina tumhaare
bina tumhaare
soona sab sansaar bina tumhaare
bina tumhaare

Atulji,
As I had doubt about the lyricist and the singers, I asked Sudhirji to throw some light on it. As always, he did provide all the info I needed except the singers for which he is waiting for Shri Harmandirji’s response.
Thanks for posting this song.

Atul ji, and Khyati ji,
The singer of this song is undoubtedly BINOTA ROY. I am reproducing a part of her Bio,which clearly mentions the above song.

Binota Basu was born in a Brahma family in 1925 on Kojagari Lakshmi Purnima Tithi and was therefore called Lakshmi. Her father Satya Sundar Basu was an advocate in Patna High court. Binota was one of his six daughters. Satya Sundar was a lawyer by profession but his music was his first love and after court hours his routine was to sing and play musical instruments like the Sitar, the organ and many others. Binota’s mother was a good singer too. So Binota had music in her blood and she entered films as a playback artiste in Dikshul (1943). Raichand Boral had introduced her to Pankaj Kumar Mallick, the music director of the film. This happened after the family shifted to Calcutta. While in Calcutta, Binota along with her sisters came in close touch with cousin Chinmohan Sehanbish , who in turn introduced them to the legendary Debabrata Biswas from whom Binota got some early training in music. Under Raichand Boral’s guidance her first major success was in Wapas (1943), where she sang “Albela Mastana”, “Jeevan Hai Bekar” and “Bhool Na Jana”. All the songs became popular. The next year Binota became a star with her acting and singing in Bimal Roy’s Udayer Pathey (1944) and with the Hindi version Humrahi got an all India exposure. Her popularity touched the sky but soon she got married to Jyotirmoy Roy, who had written the story of Udayer Pathey. After marriage she was allowed to work mostly in films associated with her husband. These included Abhijatri (1947), Diner Parey Din (1949), Shankhabani (1951), Nagardola (1956), Taka Ana Pai (1956), Kancha Mithhey (1957).In Abhijatri she was paired with her first hero Radhamohan Bhattacharya again. After her husband’s death in 1961 she withdrew from the film world but came back later to give memorable performances as character artiste in Tapan Sinha’s Jatugriha (1964), Mrinal Sen’s Calcutta 71 (1971), Chhayateer (1972) and finally Hangsharaj (1976). She won the best actress and best supporting actress awards from the prestigious Bengal Film Journalists’ Association a number of times. Binota Roy was inspired to write by her writer husband. She is credited with several short stories which were published in popular Bengali magazines. A collection of her stories was first published as a book titled Mayamukur in 1964. Binota Roy died on the twenty eighth day of July, 1978 and was survived by sons Ramya and Samya and daughter Suchita.
