The Voice of Mukesh #43
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Today we start exploring 1950 – the tenth year of Mukesh’s career. As noted in the previous post, we have completed the journey of the songs sung by Mukesh till the year 1949 (with two songs still under search).
In 1950, as per the Mukesh Geet Kosh, he has rendered 36 songs. Out of these, 20 songs are already showcased here on this blog. And so we start the journey to locate and bring up for listening, the remaining songs. I have not yet done a complete survey of the remaining songs, but my expectation is that as we get into the 1950s, the availability of the songs is definitely better. We shall see as we go along.
We pick up the thread with the film ‘Bebus’. This film is a social drama from the banner of Chitravani Limited, and is direct by Bhagwan Hajele. The main cast of actors includes Bharat Bhushan, Purnima, Chandrashekhar, Cuckoo, Aarti, Radhika, Wazir Mohammed Khan, Sultan, Suresh, Bhargav etc. The lyrics for the 9 songs in this film are shared between Jalaal Malihabaadi and Saaliq Lucknowi. In the music department also, there are two music directors who share the honors for compositions. The names are Pt Ganpat Rao and SK Pal. As per the available data in Geet Kosh and Mukesh Geet Kosh, the specific names of the lyricist and music director for each song is not separately known, except for one or two songs. For this particular song, the information is not specified.
The singing voices are those of Mukesh and Geeta Roy (later Geeta Dutt). This is a sad song of separation. The two singing voices are closely interleaved. The words express sorrow and regret, and a pining to be together again. Ah, the vagaries of love – takes one to the limits of happiness, and also brings one down to the depths of emotional misery. An amazing emotion it is.
Listen to and enjoy this sound from more than six decades ago.

Lyrics
kya tujhko hua aakhir
kya tujhko hua aakhir
batlaa dil e deewaana
batlaa dil e deewaana
jo chaahta hai kehnaa
tu dukh bharaa afsaana
ae dil e deewaana
kya beet gayi dil par
uff teri judaai mein
tu meri mohabbat se
tu meri mohabbat se
begaana hai begaana
begaana hai begaana
jo chaahta hai kehnaa
tu dukh bharaa afsaana
ae dil e deewaana
jab tu bhi nahin apna
jab dil bhi nahin apna
duniya meri nazron mein
veeraana hai veeraana
veeraana hai veeraana
ae dil e deewaana
ae dil mere roothe dil
donon mein asar bhar de
main shamaa banoon tu to
parwaana hai parwaana
parwaana hai parwaana
ae dil e deewaana
nazron se gira de tu
ya dil mein jagah de de
har dil ka mere tukdaa
nazraana hai nazraana
nazraana hai nazraana
jo chaahta hai kehnaa
tu dukh bharaa afsaana
ae dil e deewaana
