The signature sounds of “Morey Nain Baawre, Chham Chham Neer Bahaayen” (‘Sabak’, 1950) and “Badnaam Naa Ho Jaaye Mohabbat Ka Fasaana”(‘Shaheed’, 1948) are now memories almost as if etched in stone. Piece of music, as if, immortalized by the voices that sang them. Quite so, for the voice is also known as the Nightingale of Punjab.
Remembering Surinder Kaur the 84th anniversary of her birth today.
A very brief stint, and comparatively speaking, a small body of work. She stayed in Bombay all of 5 years, and recorded 56 songs for 20 films. Adverse health circumstances and the advice of doctors, took the singer back home to Delhi. In this short stay even, she has rendered some of the most wonderful songs, two of which I mentioned above already.
For this post, I present this lovely solo song from the 1948 film, ‘Laal Dupatta’. The film comes from the banner of Akaash Chitra, and is directed by KB Lal. The cast of actors includes Madhubala, Sapru, Ranjeet Kumari, Ulhas, Rajan Haksar, Neelam, Bhaga Bai, Gulzar, Kesari, Pandit Iqbal, Yusuf etc. The music for the film is composed by Gyan Dutt. The twelve songs of this film are written by three poets – Manohar Khanna, DN Madhok and Munshi Shams. However, the name of the poet behind this song is not specifically known.
Listen to this wonderful song of coming of age and falling in love. There is a spring in the heart that even tells the koel bird, not to sing anymore,
the songs of waiting and yearning. And to start singing songs of meeting and happiness. A lovely song of young heart, so beautifully rendered by Surinder Kaur. Enjoy.
Song-Chanchal man kaahe dharke(Laal Dupatta)(1948) Singer-Surinder Kaur, MD-Gyan Dutt

The count of films you have listed is 17 already, by addition of last 3 listed, the number is already 20. There is yet one more film – ‘Rooprekha’ (1948) in which she has sung one group song with Munawwar Sultana and Vaidyanath Seth, under the music direction of Samar Ghosh.
So the number actually is 21. 🙂
