This is the second song in ” Gems from obscure films” series. It is from film NAQAB POSH-1956. It is sung by Shamshad Begum and G M Durrani, under the baton of Music Director Dhumi Khan.

I do not know about today’s children, but till a few years back, i.e. prior to the 70’s, possibly every child used to read stories of kings and queens. In our childhood, in addition to reading such stories, the aged and the elderly members in the family would tell stories to their grandchildren. (with today’s social set up, these things may sound like a folk-lore ! ). The children used to love stories of Brave kings, beautiful queens, attractive princesses, handsome and adventurous princes and evil and scheming Vazirs-who would finally be tamed by the lovable prince !

The period of 1950 to 1960 was an era for such films in plenty. Adults who grew up on the diet of such type of stories from their childhood constituted a major chunk of the audiences of these films. Of course, such films were rated as B or C grade films, made on stingy budgets, employing second class Hero/heroines/Directors/Composers. This also resulted in the quality of the product content and presentation, but still, they were popular due to the action scenes and the good music. At least 70% of C grade films had good songs. May not be ALL songs in all films, but it was likely that at least one or two songs in almost every such film used to be very melodious.

NAQAB POSH was also a film which had some really very good songs. I would mention two songs in it- one by Madhubala Jhaveri and Talat mehmood (Hafiz khuda tumhara) and the other was ‘ae mere Majnu, meri galiyon mein aana chhod de’ by Shamshad and Durrani. There was also a good qawwaali by Bande Hasan, Balbir and others. I have, however, chosen the Shamshad/Durrani song today for you. Yet another thing was that both the composers Dhumi Khan and Ramlal had sung a duet in this film.

NAQAB POSH was a film by Kaizer Films. The producer was N. Buli and the director was a debutant- Ram Pahawa. Music was provided by Dhumi Khan and Ramlal. There were 4 lyricists who wrote 8 songs sung by 8 Playback singers.

Dhoomi khan from Rampur-U.P. started his career in the 30s as an actor. He acted in many films and also sang songs in some films. His song with Kanan Devi ” Ambua ki dali dali” from Vidyapati-37 is an evergreen song. New Theatres gave him many roles and songs in its films.

As a composer, he gave music to ” Sassi Punnu” a Punjabi film, in which Baby Noorjahan acted and sang songs. His other films as a Music Director were not that successful, namely Darogia Daaku-40, Yaad Rahe-40, Rehnuma-48, Anokhi Sewa-49 and Naqab Posh-56. Unfortunately, Dhoomi Khan neither became a famous actor, nor a singer, nor a successful composer.

Film Naqab Posh-56 had the cast of Manhar Desai, Chitra, Kumkum, Kamal, Anwar Hussain, Bhudo Advani, Fazlu, Maruti, Gope etc.

The story of the film was-

Sultan Ahmed Ali was a popular king, but his nephew Murad was an evil person. Murad wanted to usurp the Sultan’s throne at any cost. One day he and his mistress Niloufer invite the Sultan for a Dance party to lure him. Finding that he is not getting lured the Sultan is murdered by Murad. Hhe then tries to get maximum supporters and declares himself as the Ruler.

The Sultan has a son, Nisar, who was more interested in writing Shayari and singing songs. The Sultan, fed up of this throws the prince out . The Prince too happily disappears among the common people to pursue his liking.

After the Sultan is killed, his loyal Vazir sends few people to search for Nisar. The Queen also sends Kamaal and Jamaal to find him. No one knows where he is. However,Kamaal and Jamaal meet a happy go lucky poet/singer Aman who loves Noor.

All of a sudden, there appears a Naqab Posh- a hooded bandit, who helps the poor and punishes the oppressors. Murad’s army harasses the common people and extracts taxes. They also indulge in looting and abduction of girls. The Naqab Posh tries to rescue such girls and also fights with the army people. Murad orders his capture but no one can catch him.

Murad suspects that this Naqab posh may be Prince Nisar. he plans to capture him with deceit and succeeds. Naqab Posh is sentenced to death. however, Jamaal, Kamaal, Noor and others help the Naqab Posh to escape. He assembles his own supporter army and confronts Murad. In the final fight the naqab posh defeats and kills Murad. Then it is revealed that the Naqab Posh is none other than the Prince Nisar himself.

The happy citizen crown him as a king and Noor becomes the queen.

Let us now hear the ‘Gem from this Obscure film’-Naqab posh-56…..

Song-Ae mere majnu (Naqab posh)(1956) Singers-Shamshad Begum, G M Durrani, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-Dhumi Khan

Lyrics

ae mere majnu
meri galiyon mein aana chhod de
ae mere majnu
meri galiyon mein aana chhod de
kis tarah dil ka kabootar aashiyaana chhhod de
kis tarah dil ka kabootar aashiyaana chhhod de
haaye
aashiyaana chhhod de

ae mere majnu
meri galiyon mein aana chhod de

aisi waisi baat keh di
to machaa doongi main shor
macha do
aisi waisi baat keh di
to machaa doongi main shor
haaye allah mujhko raste
haaye allah mujhko raste mein sataana chhod de
haaye sataana chhod de
ae mere majnu
meri galiyon mein aana chhod de

phaphadaa kar khaa ke gash
aage tere gir jaaunga

achcha
phaphadaa kar khaa ke gash
aage tere gir jaaunga
ae meri bandook
tu mera nishaana chhod de
ae meri bandook
tu mera nishaana chhod de
mera nishaana chhod de

ae mere majnu
meri galiyon mein aana chhod de

is tarah mat dekh
darr lagta hai mujhko pyaar se
is tarah mat dekh
darr lagta hai mujhko pyaar se
keh diya hai sau dafa
haaye
keh diya hai sau dafa
nazren ladaana chhod de
nazren ladaana chhod de
ae mere majnu
meri galiyon mein aana chhod de

shukr karta hoon ke majnu ne tujhe dekha nahin
waaqai
shukr karta hoon ke majnu ne tujhe dekha nahin
dekh le to ishq laila se ladaana chhod de
dekh le to ishq laila se ladaana chhod de
laila se ladaana chhod de

ae mere majnu
meri galiyon mein aana chhod de
kis tarah dil ka kabootar aashiyaana chhhod de
ae mere majnu
meri galiyon mein aana chhod de

Many thanks for the post Sir ji.
The reading of stories as and story-telling by the elders as you mentioned was well there when I was growing. I remember whenever my grandfather visited us we would eagerly wait the time after dinner before going to bed to hear stories of ‘Raja-Rani’, ‘Arabian Nights’ and others, I remember he used to tell us a story of ‘brothers’ ‘lost and found’ and many many others.
We used to read magazines in our colony club (like Chandoba, Champak, etc., books of detective stories of Dhananjay’ and others). I think this tradition continued till the eighties or nineties too. Or may be in some households it is still continuing at some places only.

I liked the song very much. Incidentally I had come across a Sulochana Kadam solo song from this movie in Aug’2013 which I had shared then and like it too very much. I will now listen the other song as mentioned by you. Thanks for the story and other details about the this movie.

Regards,
