KARWAT (1949) was produced under the banner of Shri Gopal Pictures and directed by Gopal. IMDb has also given the name of B R Chopra as director (uncredited). The star cast included Geeta Nizami, Satish, Paro Devi, Jeevan, Leela Mishra, Sarita Devi, Kamalakant etc. According to information on the website, the film was a costume drama. The film has 11 songs penned by six lyricists – Saifuddin Saif (6), D N Madhok (1), Buta Ram Sharma (1), Saraswati Kumar Deepak (1), Pardes Balam (1) and Charan Das (1). The songs were set to music by Hansraj Bahl. The film appears to have been delayed in the background of partition and aftermath.

Some time back, I became aware of two of this film’s songs sung by actor-singer Paro Devi. I am presenting one of them, a ghazal ‘nigaahen milaane milaane ko jee chaahta hai’. This ghazal reminded me of a similarly worded mukhda of a ghazal nigaahen milaane ko jee chaahta hai from ‘Paraayi Aag’ (1948) and one of the most popular qawwalis, nigaahen milaane ko jee chaahta hai from ‘Dil Hi To Hai’ (1963). The ghazal of ‘Karwat’ (1949) was written by Saifuddin Saif, a name I had rarely heard of. A search on the internet revealed that Saifuddin Saif (1922-1993) was one of the prominent Urdu poets in Pakistan. He was born in Amritsar and completed his graduation from Lahore. He started writing poetry from his college days. He fell in love with a girl in the college who deserted him. His failure in a love affair is reflected in some of his ghazals and nazms which I have gone through. In Lahore, he was drawn towards film industry.

After reading his short life sketch, I could see some similarities of events in the early life of Saifuddin Saif and Sahir Ludhianvi. Both had unsuccessful love affairs in their colleges and some of their poetry reflected the feelings of despair in that front. They even seem to think alike in one of their ghazals. For instance Sahir Ludhianvi’s kabhi khud pe kabhi haalat pe ronaa aaya with Saifuddin Saif’s ham ko to gardish e haalat pe ronaa aaya express almost identical feelings in similar words with one she’r in both these ghazals having almost similar wordings. Both had leftist leaning in their idealogy. Sahir Ludhianvi probably knew him during his Lahore days through the Progressive Writers Association. After partition, while Saifuddin Saif migrated to Lahore, Pakistan, Sahir Ludhianvi returned to India.

Even though both were poets, they were more interested in associating themselves with the film industry. While Sahir Ludhinavi limited his association with film industry to writing songs, Saifuddin Saif not only wrote songs but also wrote scripts and dialogues and produced films in Pakistan. He also produced a Punjabi film ‘Kartar Singh’ (1959) jointly with Amrita Pritam in Pakistan and directed it.

The ghazal under discussion has two versions – one sung by Paro Devi and another with different lyrics by S D Batish. Both the versions have been composed in traditional styles. Only audio clips are available of the songs. While it is apparent that Paro Devi sang for herself in the film, I am not sure on whom S D Batish version was picturised.

The blog made an interesting reading as it brought certain things to light which were unknown to me. Karwat, Parayi aag and Dil hi to hai, 3 films made in different times with identicle or same lyrics – make it unique. The story of Saifuddin Saif and Sahir though contemporary seems to be running parallel. Strange!
