“Neelkamal” (1947) was produced and directed by Kidar Sharma. The movie had Raj Kapoor and Madhubala in lead roles. The movie also had Begam Para, Nazira, Rajendra, Shanta Kumari, Baby Indira, Kumar Sahu , Pesi Patel, Subhashini etc in it.

Eight songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the ninth song from the movie. This song is a duet which is sung by Rajkumari and Snehal Bhatkar. The picturisation shows a sulking Raj Kapoor leaving in his bullok cart and Madhubala running behind him, asking him not to leave her. It is a nice rural kind of picturisation. Personally I do not think bullock carts run so fast that one needs to run to keep pace with them. She could have easily outrun the bullock cart and then boarded it to lip sync the song on board. But then this would not have appeared like a separation song to many. 🙂

Kidar Sharma is the lyricist. Music is composed by Snehal Bhatkar.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Song-Jaiyo na bides mora jiya bhar aayega(Neelkamal)(1947) Singer-Rajkumari, Snehal Bhatkar, Lyrics-Kidar Sharma, MD-Snehal Bhatkar

Lyrics(Nitin Shah)

jaiyo na bides
mora jiya bhar aayega
jiya bhar aayega
jiya bhar aayega
mukh kumhlaayega
kachhu na suhayega
jaiyo na
jaiyo na bides
mora jiya bhar aayega
jiya bhar aayega
jiya bhar aayega
mukh kumhlayega
kachhu na suhaayega
jaiyo na
aison se kya moh badhaana
aiso se kya moh badhaana
jo nahi seekhe
jo nahi seekhe
jo nahi seekhe preet nibhaana
jinka na ghar baar koi
jinka na koi thikaana
jinka na ghar baar koi
jinka na koi thhikana

maana ji
maana
hamne maana
na ajiyo na
na jaiyo na bides
mora jiya bhar aayega
jiya bhar aayega
jiya bhar aayega
mukh kumlayega
kachu na suhayega
jaiyo na

ham chali ye chal premat aana (?)
ham chali ye chhal premat aana (?)
swapna hai ham bass mann bharmana (?)
swapna hai ham bass mann bharmaana (?)
hamri hansi udaane nikle
dil ki hansi na udaana
hamri hansi udaane nikle
dil ki hansi na udaana

taana de lo ji de lo taana
na jaiyo na
na jaiyo na bides
mora jiya bhar aayega
jiya bhar aayega
jiya bhar aayega
mukh kumhlayega
kachhu na suhaayega
jaiyo na

tum nahin kehte paas bulaao
tum nahin kehte paas bulao
ham nahin kehte mann mein basaao
ham nahin kehte mann mein basaao
jo ankhiyaan darshan ki pyaasi
jo ankhiyaan darshan ki pyaasi
unki araz hai ki door na jaao
door na jaao
andhera sa chaayega
dil bujh jayega
zulam ho jaayega
zulam ho jaayega
jaiyo na

Snehal Bhatkar! What a musical name! As the luck could have it, he did not compose music for too many Hindi films in comparison to Marathi, but was a talented music director. ‘Kabhi tanhayiyon me humari had aayegi’ will ever be remembered by music lovers.

He gave music for this film ‘Neelkamal’ as ‘B Vasudev’. His real name was Vasudev Gangaram Bhatkar. To avoid any breach in contract while officially working for HMV, he adopted various pseudonyms as a composer. These included “B. Vasudev” and “Snehal” but another choice, “Snehal Bhatkar”, became fixed. The name was derived from that of his then newly-born daughter, Snehlata.[

Atul ji,
I happened to read a comment on AK ji’s blog that Narayan Dutt is the singer & not B. Vasudev alias Snehal Bhatkar. Could this be confirmed? Thanks a ton!

Atul ji,

After listening the song once more, I also feel that the male voice in the song may not be of Snehal Bhatkar. I have heard a couple of Marathi bhajans sung by Snehal Bhatkar like ‘Vaariyane kundal haare ‘ and ‘Visaava Vithal’. I find the voice in the song is somewhat different than those in two Marathi bhajans.

Atul ji, Sadanand ji and Umesh ji,
Harmandir Singh ji has clarified in his Listeners’ Bulletin No.76 of Feb 1989, that the film version is sung by Narayan Dutt, while for the Record no-N 26979 it was sung by Rajkumari and Snehal Bhatkar.
This should settle the issue.
