This is the 17th song in the “VINTAGE KISHORE ” series. It is a duet of Kishore and Asha Bhonsle and the Music Director of this song is James Singh aka Jimmy.

It was popularly believed that this Music Director Jimmy had taught Kishore Kumar the art of yodelling, but fresh evidence is available which claims that Kishore Kumar had learnt this Yodelling from the records of Austrian Singer Jimmy Rogers. These records were collected by Anup Kumar.

So far we have seen how Kishore Kumar was striving hard to establish himself as a singer, but circumstances were making him an actor instead.

Kishore was, though reluctantly, accepting acting roles with the sole hope that at least he would get to sing the songs filmed on him. When Bimal Roy selected him to do the role of an unemployed youth in the film Naukari-1954, Kishore naturally thought that the songs shot on him would be sung by him. He was, however, in for a rude shock shock when he learnt that the Music Director of this film Naukari, Salil Chaudhary, had invited Hemant Kumar to sing his songs.

Kishore rushed to the recording rooms of Mohan studios, Andheri, and pleaded with Salilda, that he be given the songs. Salilda had come from Calcutta to Bombay and Naukari was just his second film here. He told Kishore bluntly that he had never heard him in Calcutta.

Kishore modestly requested him to listen to him at least now and that in Bombay, he has always sung his own songs in films. When Kishore started singing, Salilda stopped him abruptly and said,” you don’t know even A,B,C of singing. Just get lost. Hemant Kumar will sing your songs”.

A stunned and shattered Kishore approached Bimal Roy, who flatly refused to interfere in Salilda’s musical decisions.

Kishore Kumar, next day, made a second attempt, with his 78 RPM records of Ziddi and Muqaddar, but Salilda remained unconvinced, saying,” Kishore is no singer at all”. However many others tried to convince him, saying that this was just the beginning of Kishore’s career and at this stage, making him sing in other voices would ruin his career.

Very reluctantly, Salilda relented and gave Kishore three songs in that film. Salilda still made Hemant sing the sad version of “Chhota sa ghar hoga” in the film as a background song !

After 17 years, the same Salilda ,gave the same Kishore kumar two of the four songs of his film,” Mere Apne”-1971. That time he said,” My hats off to Burmanda for spotting a spark in this boy in those days, when we all had rejected him. Of course,by 1971,Kishore kumar had already become the No.1 playback singer in Bombay, but he did accept Salilda’s compliment with humility.

An almost similar case was that of Music Director Naushad. Naushad had worked as an assistant to Khemchand Prakash while they were in Ranjit Movietone. Kishore had won the vocal approval of the GURU Khemchand Prakash in 1948-49, but not his CHELA Naushad, for full 27 years of his career. Naushad never called Kishore during the ‘Golden Period’ for singing. Kishore Kumar, however, always wanted to sing for Naushad.

Finally, in 1974, during the declining stage of his career, Naushad called Kishore Kumar for a Duet with Asha, for the film ” Sunehra Sansar”. This song was not for the lead pair. Though Kishore had become the Top singer by that time, still, just because it was Naushad’s song, Kishore sang it to fulfil his own lifelong desire of singing under Naushad’s music direction. Later Naushad said that he was impressed with the grasping power of Kishore kumar. He was surprised with Kishore’s habit of keeping song notations on his left hand four fingers, while singing and doing rehearsals.

The song was ” Hello Hello, kya haal hai”. With this song Kishore Kumar had finally sung a song for Naushad ! But he was shocked when he found that the song was not included in the film at all. What is more the song was not even filmed by the Director. Experts feel that Naushad only wanted to evaluate Kishore Kumar if he was really aa gifted a singer as repeatedly claimed by Dada Burman during the conversations Naushad and Burman used to have during their Morning Walk meets in the Khar-Bandra area !
( Thanks to ‘ Journey down memory lane’ for some of the information used here.)

According to yet another Statistics, Kishore Kumar had sung 2845 songs in 38 years. Kishore kumar was nominated for the Film fare Awards 27 times and he got it 8 times. The first award was for ‘Roop tera Mastana’ -Aradhana and the Last one was for ‘ Saagar kinare dil ye pukare’ from Saagar-1985. Kishore’s songs were filmed on 187 actors (as against Asha-422, Lata-372, Rafi-282 and Mahendra Kapoor-197 actors).

Enjoy this interesting song from’ Muqaddar “-1950 which is sung by Kishore and Asha. Raj Shekhar is the lyricist.
