“Girl Friend”(1960) was directed by Satyen Bose for Basu Chitra Mandir, Bombay and it had Kishore Kumar, Waheeda Rehman, Bipin Gupta, Nazeer Hussain, Leela Mishra, Jagdev, Dhumal, Gautam, Keshto, Master Anwar, Daisy Irani etc in it.

Four songs of “Girl Friend”(1960) have been discussed so far.

Here is the fifth song from “Girl Friend”(1960). Only the audio of this song is available.

This song is a rare song which is sung by Kishore Kumar and others. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist of this fun song. Music is composed by Hemant Kumar.

Only the audio of this song is available as of now, but it is clear that the song was picturised on Kishore Kumar and others. From the lyrics, it appears to be a devotional song dedicated to Maa Kaali or may be a song where Maata enters the body of a devotee (Kishore Kumar in this case). I request our knowledgeable readers to throw liht on the picturisation of this song.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

A small correction in the lyrics please:
‘Man hushaaye’ in the fourth line of the lyrics should be ‘manahu suhaaye’. The first four lines are from a famous poem of Maithili Sharan Gupt.

Pratap ji,

I searched for ‘Maithili Sharan Gupt poems’ on the net but could lay my hand on the lines used in the song.

Are you sure the first four lines are from a poem written by Maithili Sharan Gupt? Or could be the work of some other poet? There are Braj dialects in these four lines and my understanding from school days has been that Maithili Sharan Gupt wrote poems in khari bholi.

By the way, the first line of the poem has a great ‘ornamentation’ (alankar) of ‘ta’ – tarani, tanuja, tat, tamal, taruwar.

You are quite correct, Sadanandji. I also remembered these lines from school days, as an example of ‘anupraas’ alankar (alliteration). I regret that it was a lapse of my memory about the poet; it was Bharatendu Harishchandra and not Maithili Sharan Gupt as I had written. It is from the poem ‘Yamuna varnan’. I could find it on the site http://www.kavitakosh.org

तरनि तनूजा तट तमाल तरुवर बहु छाये।
झुके कूल सों जल-परसन हित मनहु सुहाये॥

Maithili Sharan Gupt wrote, ‘Charu chandra ki chanchal kirne khel rahi thi jal-thal mein’, another example of alliteration, which is also stuck in my mind, and is perhaps the cause of the confusion. The correction suggested is however confirmed.

Regards,

– Pratap
