‘Jaise Ko Taisa’ (1973) was produced under the banner of AVM Productions and was directed by Murugan Kumaran. The cast included Jeetendra, Reena Roy, Kamini Kaushal, Ramesh Deo, Anwar Hussain, Srividya (debutant), Roja Ramani, Dinesh Hingoo, Mohan Choti etc. This was one of more than a dozen films in which Jeetendra played the double role. The film is said to be the remake of a Kannada film, ‘Bhale Jodi’ (1970).

I have recently watched the film which appears to have been inspired partly from ‘Ram Aur Shyam’ (1967) and partly from ‘Raja Aur Rank’ (1968) which in turn is inspired from Mark Twain’s novel “The Prince and the Pauper” (1881). The other Hindi films with, more or less, the similar plot are ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’. (1972) and ‘Chaalbaaz’ (1989) with double roles played by Hema Malini and Sridevi, respectively. ‘Kishen Kanhaiya’ (1990) also had some traces of the similar plot. Interestingly, all these films have been a box office success implying that this inspired story had repeat values.

The story of the film is as under:

Vijay (Jeetendra) stays with his widowed mother (Kamini Kaushal) and a younger sister, Munni (Roja Ramani). After the death of his father, Vijay’s mother has been taking care of the household and his college education mainly through stitching dresses. Vijay’s mother has been experiencing the boots of stomach ache and the doctor has diagnosed her illness as cancer. She requires immediate surgery to save her from the death for which Vijay is unable to raise the money despite his efforts to get help from his friends. As a last resort, he attempts to break a locker of a rich person in his house. But his conscious will not permit him to do so. At that point, he sees the owner of the house, Vinod (Jeetendra) who, to his surprise, looks like him. After knowing the reason, Vinod gives to Vijay the required amount needed for his mother’s surgery.

After the death of his wealthy father, Vinod has been taken care by his maternal uncle, Shyamlal (Anwar Hussain) with a motive of grabbing his wealth including a diary containing the location of a hidden treasure. Hence Vinod is deliberately brought up to be timid, coward and submissive by giving him some drink mixed with drug in the guise of the medicine. Shyamlal’s son, Prakashchand. called Pashi (Ramesh Deo) badly treats Vinod. He frequently assaults Vinod to get the whereabout pf the diary of hidden treasure but he is not aware of it. Vinod is fed-up with his life.

The surgery on Vijay’s mother is successful. As a gratitude, Vijay invites Vinod to his house to meet his mother. Vinod is happy as he has never seen his mother. However, in the night, Vinod is haunted by the ghost of his lover, Radha (Srividya) who had committed suicide when he refused to marry her under pressure from his uncle. He runs to Vijay’s house and reveals all the facts about his life to him. He requests Vijay to allow him to stay in his house as his life is in danger in his palatial house under his uncle and Pashi. As a gratitude to Vinod, Vijay decides to switch the roles by asking Vinod to stay in his house as Vijay and he would stay in his palatial house as Vinod to tackle Shyamlal and Pashi.

After facing some initial problems, Vinod finds his life peaceful, free from torments of his uncle and Pashi, having a loving mother and a sister for the company. Vijay on the other hand acts dumb but with an iron hand to tackle Pashi who is surprised with the change in Vinod’s behaviour. However, Shyamlal restrains Pashi as his first goal is to get the information on the hidden treasure of Vinod’s father.

Over a period of time, Vijay slowly takes control of managing the family’s estate. During this period, Vijay falls in love with a village belle, Roopa (Reena Roy), who happens to be Radha’s younger sister. Vijay saves her from a molester after which she has become favourably inclined toward him. Vijay is now also haunted by Radha’s ghost assuming him to be Vinod. Radha’s ghost pesters him to tell her where he has kept the diary to get the location of the hidden treasure. While following Radha’s ghost, Vijay gets an anklet with her name inscribed on it. The fact is that Radha is not a ghost but she is alive after rescued by Pashi while committing suicide. She is now under the control of Pashi who has instructed her to behave like a ghost to pressurise Vinod to get the diary. Until she gets the diary, he will not release her child who is kept captive under him.

One day, Roopa gets to know from her father that Vinod (actually Vijay, thinking him to be Vinod) is responsible for the suicide of her sister, Radha because she was carrying his child and he refused to marry her. Roopa is ashamed that she became close to Vinod (Actually, Vijay), the killer of her sister, Radha. She decides to kill herself by jumping into a river. But Vijay saves her and tells her that her sister Radha is alive and shows her the anklet. It is at that time, Vijay comes to know about Radha’s connection with Vinod. He calla Vinod to meet him urgently at his estate to get some clarification from him.

When Vinod meets Vijay in the presence of Roopa, all misunderstanding of Roopa are cleared especially when Vinod says that he will marry Radha. At that time, the Munimji (Mohan Choti) accidentally gets hold of the diary Shyamlal and Pashi were looking for. He hands over the dairy to Shyamlal who is very happy. However, when Vijay returns, his cook (Dinesh Hingoo) tells him that Munimji has handed over the diary to Shyamlal. Vijay hatches a plan to retrieve the diary by disguising as a folk singers along with Roopa at Pashi’s birthday party and he is successful. He also gets to know the location of the hidden treasure and visit the place to confirm that there is indeed a hidden treasure.

However, Shyamlal and Pashi get to know that Vijay ( for them, Vinod) has retrieved the diary. Vijay tells them that he will hand over the diary provided Radha with her son is released and handed over to him. Pashi plays the trick and takes Vijay to Radha where he is confined to a room with Radha. Simultaneously, Pashi also gets Vinod, Vijay’s mother and Munni as a bargaining power to retrieve the diary and get to the hidden treasure. Vijay agrees to hand over the diary provided he is released and goes back to his house to get the diary. He is blindfolded and is accompanied by half-a-dozen goondas. However, on the way, Roopa with the help of the Cook, gets his blindfold removed and escapes from the goondas.

In a den, Pashi is pressurising Vinod to sign the legal documents by inflicting injuries to Vijay’s mother and Munni. In an desperate attempt, Vinod gets out of his chains and fights with Pashi. At that time, Vijay returns with Roopa. Both Vijay and Vinod defeat the Pashi’s goondas. While Vijay has rescues all including Radha, Pashi threatens to put the house on the fire if they try to escape. At that point Roopa’s father comes and shoots Pashi with his gun. Vinod and Vijay unite with Radha and Roopa, respectively and they all live together in Vinod’s palatial house.

The film had six songs written by Anand Bakshi which were set to music by R D Burman. Three songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 4th song, ‘kaun si hai wo cheez jo yahaan naheen miltee’ rendered by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle for Jeetendra and Roja Ramani, respectively. Roja Ramani is playing the role of sister to Jeetendra while Kamini Kaushal is in the role of their mother.

Roja Ramani is a well-known actress in South India who has acted in many films in South Indian languages besides a few Odia films. She is also well known as a dubbing artist having dubbed in more than 400 films. She debuted as a child artist in a Telugu film, ‘Bhakta Prahlada’ (1967) for which she won the National Film Award for the Best Child Actor. She has acted as a child artist in Hindi film, ‘Meharbaan’ (1967) and as a teenager in ‘Apna Desh’ (1972) and the film under discussion.

The context of the song is that Vijay (Jeetendra), the son of Kamini Kaushal has decided to switch his role to become Vinod (Jeetendra), the rich landlord’s timid son who has suffered from the atrocities committed by his maternal uncle, Anwar Hussain and his son, Ramesh Dev. Vinod, after staying in place of Vijay has felt for the first time the peace in his life and is happy that he has now a mother and a sister for the company which he was missing as a landlord’s son. This is the song Vinod dedicates to Kamini Kaushal as his mother because he always felt the absence of the mother in his life.
