Continuing the series on actresses whose names start with A and who have lip-synched to Asha Bhosle’s songs, we come today to Anu Aggarwal, the Aashiqui girl.
Anu Aggarwal arrived with a bang. Her very first film created a huge splash. I still remember the posters of Aashiqui (1990) when they were released. The posters showed a man and a woman hidden behind a jacket, apparently sharing a kiss behind it. Everybody was curious to know who the actor and actress were and what they looked like. The build-up was immense. The songs from the film were first aired on Chitrahaar. The very next day, they became the talk of the town, attracting both praise and criticism.
Anu Aggarwal was not a complete stranger to show-biz. She had worked as a model and was therefore a familiar face to people who read magazines and paid attention to advertisements. Unfortunately, she could not recreate the success of her debut film. Her last film was Return of the Jewel Thief (1996), which, despite having a successful predecessor, lacked many of the qualities that had made the original memorable. As if that were not enough, she was involved in a serious car accident in 1997, from which she suffered greatly. This experience led her towards spirituality. For some time, she was a disciple of Ramesh Balsekar, himself a disciple of Nisargadatta Maharaj and a staunch Advaitin. Today, she runs the Anu Aggarwal Foundation, which focuses on mental health, environmental well-being, and stress relief. I wish her every success in this endeavour.
King Uncle (1993) was Rakesh Roshan’s sixth film as a director. Inspired by his father-in-law, J. Om Prakash, he began producing films in the late 1970s and continued successfully throughout the 1980s and later on. His directorial debut, Khudgarz (1987), was a major hit, as was his second venture, Khoon Bhari Maang (1988). For both films, he drew inspiration from Hollywood productions, and he continued this practice with King Uncle (1993). Reports suggest that the film was based on Annie (1982).
The story revolves around a strict and wealthy disciplinarian who is softened by the innocence of a young girl. Through her influence, he discovers love and happiness and, in the process, reunites his fragmented family. Rakesh Roshan reportedly wanted Amitabh Bachchan for the title role, but he apparently did not feel ready for such a character at that stage of his career. The role eventually went to Jackie Shroff. Anu Aggarwal plays his love interest. Shah Rukh Khan plays his younger brother who, as usual, falls in love with a poor girl (played by Nagma) and is subsequently driven out of the house. The role of the innocent girl who brings about the metamorphosis of the “stone-hearted” patriarch is played by Pooja Ruparel, who later portrayed Kajol’s younger sister in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995).
Today’s song, “Fanny Ne Mujhe Bulaayaa,” seems to be set in a Christian settlement. As the song title suggests, a Goan-style tune is used to create the appropriate atmosphere. The settlement appears to be the workers’ quarters housing the families of employees at King Uncle’s mills. The song is filmed on Jackie Shroff and Anu Aggarwal. Sudesh Bhosle and Asha Bhosle provide the playback vocals, accompanied by a male and female chorus. The music director is Rajesh Roshan, the younger brother of the film’s director, Rakesh Roshan.
With this song the movie King Uncle (1993) makes its debut on this blog.
