Today’s song is a lovely Meerabai bhajan, from the film ‘Toofan Aur Diya’ (1956), sung by Lata Mangeshkar. This song was very popular in those days and even today you will sway with its melody. The tune will linger with you for quite some time, I assure.
1956 was a Silver Jubilee year of Indian Talkie Films. This year, most successful films were entertainers. There were of course some films carrying social messages. One of them was ‘Jaagte Raho’ (‘Ek Din Ratre’ in Bangla), which tried to bring out the upper middle class hypocrisy in a metro city like Bombay. Initially, the film did not make any ripples, but after it won International awards, it became very popular. (People of other nations have to tell us that our film is good !). A social message, excellent music and solid story – the hallmarks of an RK film were all there in it. Then, the film ‘Ek Hi Raasta’ tackled the issue of widow re-marriage and acceptance of a new father by the child. Comedy entertainer ‘Nai Dilli’ emphasized the need for inter language marriages in India. Satyajit Ray’s ‘Aparajita’- the sequel to ‘Pather Panchali’ (1955), hit the screens in India after winning accolades internationally.
Musical entertainers like ‘CID’, ‘Chori Chori’, ‘Basant Bahar’, ‘Rajhath’, ‘Bhai Bhai’, ‘Funtoosh’ and ‘Inspector’ were quite popular. Amongst all these, a powerful tear-jerker like ‘Toofan Aur Diya’ from Rajkamal stood out. It also brought actress Nanda into limelight and made her drop “Baby” from her name.
Remembering Nanda today, on the anniversary of her passing away (25th March).
In the general sense, Nanda was neither beautiful nor glamorous. She was just plain lucky to get big banner films to become a successful actress. Initially, she was considered fit only for pathetic roles or sister roles. Later on she became a leading lady. There is a misconception that Nanda was the daughter of Master Vinayak and actress Minakshi Shirodkar (the latter famous for her swimming scene in film ‘Bramhachari’ (1938)). But it is NOT true.
Born on 8-1-1939 to Master Vinayak and Susheelabai, at Kolhapur, Nanda was the 3rd child among the 7 siblings. When she was 5 year old, she was forced to act in a film ‘Mandir’ (1948), due to father’s poor financial situation. During the making of the film, her father died. She started doing roles in films like ‘Jaggu’ (1952), ‘Angaarey’ (1954), ‘Jagadguru Shankaracharya’ (1955), and some Marathi films. Once there was a wedding in V Shantaram’s house. She was invited to it and instructed to come in a saree. When she went there in a saree, she was told that she is selected for film ‘Toofan Aur Diya’ (1956). Then came ‘Bhabhi’ (1957), ‘Agra Road’ (1957), ‘Dulhan’ (1958), ‘Pehli Raat’ (1959), ‘Chhoti Behan’ (1959) and ‘Kaala Bazar’ (1960). Dev Anand had promised her that he will take her as a heroine. She acted as his leading lady in ‘Teen Deviyan’ (1965), who finally wins him over, in competition to two other ladies (roles played by Simi Grewal and Kalpana). After that there was no looking back.
Nanda was considered actress like Nimmi or Meena kumari for weepy roles, but with Shashi Kapoor and Sunil Dutt, she did glamorous roles and they became hits too. Her engagement with Manmohan Desai sadly ended with his suicide and thereafter she remained single for the rest of her life.
She always felt indebted to Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand for their encouragement. She had acted in Raj and Dev films, but not in a film with Dilip. She never ever refused to work with new comers like Shashi Kapoor, Dharmendra, Manoj Kumar, Sunil Dutt or Rajendra Kumar, for which they always thanked her. She spent a contented retired life with friends like Saira Bano, Asha Parekh, Sadhana, Helen and Waheeda till she died last year on 25-3-2014. (Her mother had expired the previous year.)
Film ‘Toofan Aur Diya’ was a Rajkamal film directed by Shantaram’s son, Prabhat Kumar. V Shantaram had 3 wives. The first wife Vimla gave him Prabhat Kumar (in memory of Prabhat films), Saroj and Charusheela (mother of actor Sidharth or Sushant Ray). Second wife Jayashree (Kamulkar) gave him Kiran, Rajashree (who cheated few producers, left their films half way and settled in USA, with her American husband) and Tejashree. The third wife Sandhya (Deshmukh) gave him Madhura who married Pt. Jasraj, the classical singer. Looks like V Shantaram was as prolific in marriages/children as he was in his number of films! Shantaram’s house at Panhala, near Kolhapur is now converted into a Luxury Hotel and is managed by his first child – Saroj.
His son Prabhat Kumar was an actor (‘Teen Batti Chaar Raasta’ (1953), ‘Mastaana’ (1954), ‘Maharaja’ (1964, Marathi film), ‘Dooj Ka Chand’ (1964), ‘Dhadkan’ (1946), ‘Aan Baan’ (1956) etc.) and a film Director (‘Toofan Aur Diya’, ‘Mausi’ (1958), ‘Shobha’ (1942) etc.). ‘Toofan Aur Diya’ was patently a tear jerker – a story of a brother and a sister pair who face all possible obstacles and hardships in life, and their struggle to overcome them. I don’t like such films and hence avoided this film as I was forewarned by friends. I kept miles away from the theatres where this film was shown.
Music director Vasant Desai has composed 9 lovely songs for this film. The title song sung by Manna Dey, “Ye Kahani Hai Diye Ki Aur Toofan Ki” became an iconic song. Lata, Geeta and Shamshad sang some superb songs in it. Today’s song is a Meera Bhajan. I am surprised how and why this song was not yet posted here !

I think Nanda did a movie with Diip Kumar in the 80s under B R Chopra……. Majdoor with Raj Babbar, Rati, Padmini Kolhapure etc
