“The Great Gambler”(1979) was directed by Shakti Samanta for C V K Shastri Productions, Bombay. The movie had Amitabh Bachchan (double role), Zeenat Aman, Neetu Singh, Prem Chopra, Utpal Dutt, Ifthikhar, Madan Puri, Om Shivpuri, Sujit Kumar, Helen, Roopesh Kumar, Jagdish Raj, Keshav Rana, Madhu, Prem Sagar, Ranjeet Sood, Rajan Kapoor etc in it.
Four songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. And what superb songs they all have been.
Do lafzon ki hai dil ki kahaani is regarded by Asha Bhonsle as one of her absolute favourite songs. I have heard her describe this song as her favourite on quite a few occasions. The singing , the music as well as the picturisation of this song makes it a song that can be heard and watched many times without feeling bored.
One can notice that all the abovementioned songs have the voice in Asha Bhonsle in them. Amitabh Bachchan alongwith Zeenat Aman and/or Neetu Singh figure in all these songs.
When I check up, I find that “The Great Gambler”(1979) had only five songs in it !
Here is the fifth and final song from the movie.
This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and this song is picturised as a club dance song on Zeenat Aman. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.
When I look at the star cast, I find that the name of Helen figures there. We have now covered of the songs of this movie but we have yet to come across a song picturised on Helen. So this must be quite a rare occasion where Helen does not get to lip sync even one song. I wonder why sign up Helen in a movie if she was not going to be used. Though I had watched this movie a few times, I did not notice this fact those days. I wonder if any knowledgeable reader can throw light on this matter.
With this song, “The Great Gambler”(1979) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Great Gambler bombed at the box office. In fact I read somewhere that Do lafzon ki was a lifted tune just like the Mehbooba song in sholay was lifted by R D Burman from a Persian tune.
