Amitabh – The Later Decades – 3
—————————————————–

There is something very special about his voice.  Not that other thespians of the industry are any way less impressive.  Every actor and actress have their own unique styles and expressions, and many of them have become memorable across the decades.  The sounds and the words sometimes combine together to leave such an imprint on the mind of the audiences, that certain dialogues of certain artists become popular and become part of the current idiom.

There are quite a number of examples of such impressive voices.  And then there is Amitabh.  As far as my own impression is concerned, I find that his voice has an effortless ease and a very comforting friendliness that immediately appeals to the listeners.  When the words and the mood is light and humorous, just the sound of his voice can make you see the smile that he has on his face.  And listening to his narrations, one gets a feeling that the person who is enjoying this the most, is he himself.

He first appeared on screen in 1969, in the film ‘Saat Hindustani’; a film by Khwaja Ahmed Abbaas Sb.  And the same year, his voice was already heard in another film, as a narrator.  Those who would have seen ‘Bhuvan Shome’, the classic Mrinal Sen film in the new wave cinema, will remember now his voice as the narrator in the background.  I remember seeing this film on Doordarshan in the early seventies.  But at that time, I was not too familiar with recognizing the voice that was providing the storyline links, in the background.  Many years later, I would see the film again, just to listen to this narration once again.  One can speculate only; things that are not and cannot be.  But my intuition is that if K Asif Sb had met Amitabh and heard him speak, in good time, he might as well have had him to be the background narrator in ‘Mughal e Azam’.

Over the years in the industry, he has lent his voice to about 17 or 18 films, as a narrator.  In 1972, Hrishikesh Mukherjee chose him as the narrator’s voice in his comedy film ‘Baawarchi’.  And then in 1975, Satyajit Ray picked him for this role in the only Hindi film he has directed – ‘Shatranj Ke Khiladi’.  Later notables are ‘Lagaan’ (2001), ‘Parineeta’ (2005), and ‘Jodha Akbar’ (2008), where he voice is heard in the background as the narrator.

As a presenter and an adept communicator, his signature sound of “computer jee. . .” is enough to remind people of the hugely successful TV show – ‘Kaun Banega Karodpati’.  Of the eight seasons that this show has been on, he has hosted seven of them.  After the first two seasons, the third was given to Shah Rukh Khan, as Amitabh’s health had taken a downward swing part way through the second season.  But he was back again from the next season onwards, and has stayed put.

He has lent his singing voice to the poetry of his father, Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan the famous poet and litterateur.  ‘Bachchan Recites Bachchan’ was released in 2007 – a collection of the best works of the poet, in the voice of his own son.  One critic had written that the voice of Amitabh itself gives the meanings to words and brings them to life.

And yes, of course there are more than a handful of film songs that he has sung for himself.  That is one area I will not dwell on, in this forum :).

So the special thing about this song – it is a non-film song (NFS) that became hugely popular when it was released in 2002.  Teaming up with Adnan Sami, one of the more famous singers of the current era, this track from the album ‘Tera Chehra’ became an instant hit with the young and the not-so-young alike.  Well the not-so-young had Amitabh as part of the attraction. 😉

As we see this ‘deluge of Amitabh songs’, as Peevesie has named the current frenzy with which Atul ji seems to be going after something special, which we are not privy to so far, she decided to put in her signature too.  The suggestion for this song, and the lyrics, have been sent in by our dear Peevesie.

The lyrics of the song are by Sameer.  The music and the arrangement is by Adnan Sami and his team of musicians.  A very very likeable song, a very very likebale presentation, and another reason to have this series playing out now.  Some firsts with this song – this is the first Amitabh Bachchan NFS to get posted here.  And yes, the first song for Adnan Sami too.  He has a good number of film songs also behind him now, but he opens his account on this  blog today with this NFS.  (That’s what comes with keeping good company.)

View, Listen and Enjoy.
And just count for yourselves, which of the things listed in this song you have done ‘kabhi nahin’ 😉

Awwwww… Favorite of my kids. Thanks Peevesie for the request and Sudhirbhai for fulfilling the wish.
I am not a big fan of the ALBUMS but had to buy the CD of this one during my visit to India as our dear Amitji is part of it. 🙂

Other piece that I like is by Adnan only… Lift karade
Original

Remix (Watch it to see all our comedians and villains 🙂 )
