As is my wont, my attention to films of recent origin is scant and very selective. Rather, I must say that my attention has to be drawn, nay, dragged towards a recent film, by others in my family, to make me watch one. The 2005 film ‘Parineeta’, is one of them. A film that I watched after it was recommended to me. I would still consider the 1953 edition starring Meena Kumari and Ashok Kumar as the better, more mature portrayal, but nonetheless, I am verily impressed by this newer incarnation of this filming of Sarat Chandra’s classic starring Saif Ali, Vidya Balan and Sanjay Dutt.
Ah, but I am not here to talk about ‘Parineeta’ today. I am going to talk about one very surprise guest appearance, which is either not in the initial credits, or maybe I missed it. With the result that I was completely floored when the restaurant scene appeared. And with it appeared a gem of an item song – “Kaisi Paheli Zindgani”. And with that gem of a song appeared a most stunning diva of the Hindi screen. Yes, Rekha. Having seen her on screen after a long time, I was so completely bowled over by this amorous and sensuous performance. Looking every inch the bewitching and comely siren, it was unbelievable then, that she was 51 when ‘Parineeta’ was released.
Rekha is 61 today (10th October). And going by the more recent imagery, it still is unbelievable that she is 61. I do not for a moment believe that.
Wishing Rekha ji many more such glamorous returns of this day in her life.
The suggestion for today’s song, and its lyrics has come from our dear Prakash ji. His choice takes us back to the initial years of her career. In 1973, she was just four years into her career in Hindi films, that started with her debut in 1969 in ‘Saawan Bhadon’, opposite to another debutante artist – Navin Nischol. In this 1973 film, ‘Barkha Bahaar’, she once again paired with Navin. The film is produced by Prahlad Kumar and is directed by Amar Kumar. The cast of actors includes Rekha, Navin Nischol, Mubarak, Paro, Murad, Hira Lal, Bhagwan Dada, Dulari, Shyam Kumar, Kamran, Radhakrishan, and Helen. The songs of the film written by Majrooh Sb and the music is by Laxmikant Pyaarelal. The singing voice is that of Lata ji.
The song is an interesting combination of situations. It is a mujra song, and then it is replayed as a lorie. As is apparent from the video clip, these two situations happen in continuation, one right after the other. The first part, which is the mujra, is apparently being performed under duress. A very fit and young looking Shyam Kumar, is one of the guests at the mujra. As the mujra ends and a drunk Shyam Kumar tries to impose his intentions on the comely young dancer, a small child appears, crying, searching for his mother. The dancer frees herself from the clutches of the drunken guest, and rushes to pick up the child. And the lorie vesion of the song follows immediately. Watch this young dancer, in what probably is her seventh or eighth film. Enjoy.
