Journey Through Lata’s Melodies – 03
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

I first became aware of this song through Abhi To Main Jawaan Hoon series on RMIM. Snehal Oza’s description was so vivid that it painted a picture of the song in my mind. The quest for it began in the late 90’s.

I first approached my friends from RMIM; Hrishi Dixit and Neha Desai. They used to host a radio show and I requested them to play all songs of ‘Sitaron Se Aagey’ they had; and this was the only one missing. I rented the movie and again this was missing. I then found that the was recorded but never used in the movie ! Finally I had go to the famous record collector from Nagpur, late Hamsukhbhai Dalwadi, to get this song.

Snehal’s wonderful description doesn’t need further embellishment. A soft and sweet Lata Mangeshkar delivers beautiful Majrooh lyrics, really effortlessly; as if she is gently throwing them in the air! But it’s not that simple, as I write here. In fact throwing is not a correct word. I ought to have said: she places each and every word with utmost care, after correctly modulating them. She is clearly enjoying the song. For example, on approaching “Dheere’ in the line ‘Chirag Dheere Se’; she lowers her tone, then pauses momentarily at ‘re’ of ‘Dheere’ and then slowly ascends at ‘Se~~~’. In this gentle flow of notes Sachin-Da has mixed very light orchestration – violin, guitar, tabla. The repetition of ‘Wo Aye’ after mukhada (which in turn is repeated after each stanza) is the most effective part. Each antara has three lines. First two is sung at different pitch. It’s the third one that brings it back to home. But there is no jerk. It leaves a stamp of a master.

Enjoy this less known, but oh so wonderful melody.

Song – Mehfil Mein Aaye Wo Aaj Dheere Se (Sitaaron Se Aage) (1958) Singers – Lata Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD – SD Burman

Lyrics

mehfil men aaye. . .
mehfil men aaye vo aaj dheere se
taaron bujhaa do chiraag dheere se
mehfil men aaye vo aaj dheere se
taaron bujhaa do chiraag dheere se
mehfil men aaye
vo aaye
aaye

dil ka machalna na dekh le koi
chhup chhup ke milna na dekh le koi
dil ka machalna na dekh le koi
chhup chhup ke milna na dekh le koi
ae muhabbat ae tamanna jaag dheere se
mehfil men aaye vo aaj dheere se
taaron bujhaa do chiraag dheere se
mehfil men aaye
vo aaye
aaye

paa kar kisi ke kadam ki aahaten
haule se dole hain muskuraahaten
paa kar kisi ke kadam ki aahaten
haule se dole hain muskuraahaten
dil ne chheda dhadakanon ka saaz dheere se
mehfil men aaye vo aaj dheere se
taaron bujhaa do chiraag dheere se

mehfil men aaye vo aaj dheere se
taaron bujhaa do chiraag dheere se
mehfil men aaye
vo aaye
aaye

Reminds me of
maine bulaya aur tum aaye
ab dil chaahe kya
of Apne Huye Paraaye-1964

Think of any adjective for Lataji. They may not be sufficient. Thank you Lataji, you have kept us entertained all these years and in the coming years as well.

Sri ji,

Waah, what a fantastic reminder. Wonderfully rendered.

Srinivas Bhai,
Bahot khub !!
Aise meethe aur unchi taste wale gaane dete rahiye aur hamaare jjaise minority ko khus karte rahiye.

Thanks, Sudhir ji.

Hearing this song after ages,I think. I used to like this song quite a lot. It was played on Radio Ceylon few times. Then it just disappeared. Once I was trying to tune my transistor radio to some station, and suddenly I heard this song, relayed from some foreign Radio station. I could not understand the Language of the announcer.

What Snehal ojha ji described in his writings is no exaggeration.
You will find many such Gems in “Abhi to main Jawan hoon “series.
Thanks again for making this song available again. An invaluable find indeed !

Thank you Srinivas ji.
Listened to this song after a long time. And kept listening to it in the loop many times.
What a mesmerising song! Of course, your description added even more dimensions to its beauty. Really grateful.
Thanks & regards,
Avadh Lal

Thanks every one. Just to clarify that the write up is Snehal’s and it was so good that I didn’t want to touch it. What a pity that this wonderful song was never used in the movie.
