Salil Chowdhary, by now, needs no introduction,( nor did he need it during his life time). He does not need a fresh endorsement that he was a genius- at least from this ‘na cheez’( me!). No praise is greater than one given by a person from same field and the praising word ‘genius’ for Salil Chowdhary was echoed by none other than Jaikishan (another genius )

As a matter of fact Genius is one word that sums up Salil Chowdhary, born 19 November 1922 (year is somewhat disputed and let us leave it at that). He was very versatile, writing poems, short stories, plays and played many instruments specially flute and piano. He has been described as thinking/intellectual composer, composers’composer etc and today when he is gone we find each epitaph is apt. Let me recall that the land mark movie (described by some as film of 20 th century), ‘Do Beegha Zameen’ was based on a short story by Salil Chowdhary and he also scripted this movie. Who can forget that lovely little film ‘Parakh’ (1960) also based on his story? He was nominated for Filmfare award for best story (for Parakh). Imagine, once you have known as Music Director, getting nominated for Best story? That was Salil Chowdhary!

If I am permitted to digress a bit, talking about honour in a field other than one by which a person is known, I recall an award function when southern star Dhanush was given best singer award for ‘ Ko La Vari..’. Dhanush, the gentleman, while accepting it said, in humility ‘ This would be my last award as ‘best singer’ in my lifetime, because I am not a singer, but an actor’

Resuming the track (!), Salil Chowdhury not only worked for films, his contribution extended to documentaries, TV serials & NFS. His creativity extended initially from Bengali to Hindi and then on to Malayalam. After that there was no stopping him from spreading his wings to Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, Marathi, Assamese and Oriya Films. Salil Chowdhary could easily be the only Indian Film music director who composed music for films in most of the Indian languages. His music was a unique blending of the Indian, Indian folk and the western. I found the twists & turns in his songs unpredictable there by bringing immediately a ‘Waah!’ effect. Listen to ‘Yeh bansi kyun gaaye. ‘ from ‘Parakh’ and you will know what that effect is. This is just one example apart from scores more.

Now, each new post has to present a new song. Search for the new song can be just by surfing the net. Alternately you recall your most loved songs and find the video/audio link. I set about the second route and found it difficult to locate a song not yet covered in this blog. Hence I turned to a NFS. This is from a lovely album ‘Madhur Smriti’ -a tribute to her father by Antara Chowdhary.

Antara Chowdhary started as a young singing artiste under her illustrious father. Remember ‘Teri galiyon me..’ from ‘Minoo’ ? Since then Antara has come a long way as an excellent singer, well trained in Hindustani music and western music. At some point she was a disciple of Pt Ajay Pohankar. She is also a pianist, a composer and arranger. It is not that every child finds his/her father a hero (after growing up, I mean!). But for Antara the task of paying tributes to her father has been effortless, and it shows in this tribute album.

‘Madhur Smriti’ is a ‘must possess’ album. Listen to this lovely piece from Antara & Salil Chowdhury. Lyrics: Yogesh Gaur. Enjoy the masterly play of flute & piano.Apne aap me kho jao, bina Cadbury ke !

Panchhi man mein chaara(?) toota haara
